All ships are eventually scrapped. Cunard white star planned to scrap all six of the original white star/Cunard trios and condense everything to the massive queens. The aquitania has a second lease on life because of the war

Wonderful video! She was certainly beautiful. You can see the beginning of the evolution of more modern interiors, yet every inch a late Edwardian Lady. Kudos to Herr Ballin and Blohm and Voss for creating such a beautiful ship.

Four stars, OlympiicWS! An outstanding production about an outstanding liner: photos, paintings, footage, music. Though I've been a liner enthusiast now for over 40 years there were still things new to me in this video. One of my favorite images here is that of the Bismarck/Majestic in dry dock with the original paint scheme and the dark-stained woodwork around the bridge area. I wonder what became of the furniture on the Majestic once she was retired. I suppose the furniture was auctioned off. I also wonder how many people have what are now antiques from a great liner without knowing where they came from.

There’s something to the interior and exterior of Ocean Liners that just makes the feeling surpass modern Cruise ships, the grandeur and complex patterns and designs, the curves and angles. But I must say Cruise ships are still impressive with the technology they have and the interesting entertainment, especially the Central Park on the Oasis class is appealing to me. It's sad I heard that Titanic II, if it's coming out, won't be able to have the sheer the Titanic had, some things long gone now.

Sadly, you’re correct. Those old ships existed for several reasons to do with money making. Steerage proportionally made the most money for the steam ship lines. As far as interiors, the wealthy were used to interiors that resembled their own stately homes. Take Whitemarsh Hall for instance, or any of the great houses. These were blue prints for the interiors of ships and for hotels. When these great houses fell out of favor (not all) after WWI, the wealthy would entertain at hotels. This is why all old hotels had the gracious look and appeal of a finely run estate. So too with ocean liners. The beaux art style was still popular up until WWII. The Aquatania lasted to 1950. Look it too. It was thee most Stately ship of its day. The Majestic, Laviathan, Olympic, The Queens’ Elizabeth & Mary, and even the Rex were the most glorious ships to sail on. The French ships must be included, though Normandie was so short lived and rather over done in top heavy elements. I have to look up the Vatterland to see who got it in war reparations .

The new hulls are just elongated box girders, crimped at the ends. A ship w/ sheer, to me at least, feels better in a sea.

Germany gave SS Bismarck to britain and the name of ss Bismarck was changed to RMS majestic by its new owner white star line

My Great Grandparents immigrated to the USA from England in 1925 aboard this ship. I wish pictures of third class accommodations were shown in the video, but still, it was a good one.

I'm a stickler for detail, and it's easy to 'get by' with inaccurate footage of other liners, substituting it for the subject at hand. You've done a great job of avoiding this. It's unfortunate that then, as now, the focus is almost entirely First Class. When now, as then, most paying passengers will travel economy class when flying; then most paying passengers across the Atlantic travelled in Third Class. One more thing, and that is that Albert Ballin had a sign on his desk that said, "Life Is One Damn Thing After Another." It's a shame that he isn't recognized as the brains behind the behemoths of the 1920s, and given credit as his due. Thank you again.

Once again, a ivd of outstanding quality! I only recently discovered your site because of the Olympic connection. Kudos to you and your crew! From a purely design perspective, I've alLways felt that the "Drie Shwestern" underscored Carlyle & Andrews' asthetic achievement with their Olympic class trio; that combination of grace of line and proportion was simply not possible beyond their size. Even Brittanic, in her post-Titanic guise, seems in some ways, to have "jumprd the shark".

Why is the QE and the Normandie get all the attention? I knew this but never saw a single photo unlike the QE and Normandie. I think this is another underrated tragedy.

Majestic only served only 14 years,12 years of service to White Star,2 years to Cunard White Star.I do have an answer on why she only served for 14 years.(My answer us probably wrong).In May of 1936,Queen Mary replaced Majestic due to the fact The British Pathe (a company that spreads news) says Majestic was doomed or another reason why Majestic only served 14 years because when White Star merged with Cunard,68% of White Star's ships was retired and was sold for scrapping.Majestic could be one of the ships that was retired in White Star.Luckily for Cunard,only 38% of there ships were retired.Eventhough Majestic was sold to another company,she was still popular.Her sister RMS Berengaria (known as Imperator) faced electrical problems and was sold for srapping in 1938.Calendonia was set on fire probably by an electrical problem on the ship that the crew never noticed.By 1943,she was towed to the shipyards for demolition.It really was an unfortunate end to her.

Every ship faces electrical problems ships like Olympic and Britannic also had electrical problems during her sinking. These ships were exerimental at these times and a lot of the inmovations were successful, but that shear size can make it difficult for these ships to serve for awhile.

Aside from Cunard clearly preferring to modernize its own after the merger vs scrapping white star ships Majestic was not economical and despite only serving 14 years her haul and structure were over 20 years old and with the queen mary almost ready she was no longer needed.

Just a fun fact here; the Leviathan (former Vaterland) had her old german wiring striped during her conversion back to an ocean liner to a troop ship and that was due to her german owners wont handover her deck plans as a result the newly established United states lines had to start from scratch on her as a result she went out a brand new ship when she was finished and became an american ocean liner and it was thanks to that she did not incounter the electrical issues her sisters endured but of course she still kept her hull problems which was unfixable unless you make a new ship.

She was a war reperation for the Britannic. But unlike Imperator and Vaterland she wasnt just stolen. The germans finished her in Hamburg and delivered her to England in her german livery.

It would be weird if this sank instead of Britannic, what if Britain captured this ship and had no further use for the Britannic so Britannic could finish its fitting out service and have a career. IF BRITAIN sent this to the Mediterranean and it hit a mine, would the damage be bad enough to sink it, due to its rolling issue, I'd imagine it would capsize and crush many boats, leaving many dead and only a few people alive,

No. KMS Bismarck was the first battleship named Bismarck and the SS Bismarck the first ocean liner. The Bismarck 2 would have been part of the Imperator 2 class of nazi germany if they wouldnt have lost the war.

Bismarck was not sold to the White Star Line. Germany lost the war and had to surrender everything what they had... I never heard about anything sold to England after WWI ended.

While not as bad as the money losing leviathan her career was disappointing. Her haul was already a decade old when she had her maiden voyage and by the time of the merger despite her elegance and size she was already obsolete compared to French, german and Italian liners. That plus her high operating costs made her the odd ship out when queen Mary was ready.

All ships become obsolete and the "odd one out" sooner or later. Majestic was hardly unique in that. You've basically described the fate of most liners there. Majestic had a career of around 15 years, bookended by exceptionally difficult times - WW1 to the depression. She may well have survived a great deal longer if she hadn't caught fire while being used as a training ship.
