NOTE: In the video I say the ship's hull was held together with "1 million" rivets. It was actually 10 million rivets, I just read the number wrong because I was tired. I also said that ships today don't have crows nests because they construct the navigation bridge so close to the bow. There is still some truth to that, but I have learned a lot more about ships since I made that statement. Crows' nests really aren't necessary anymore because of Radar. However crow's nests didn't just look for dangers on the horizon, they also looked after the well-being of the ship since they could see most of it from up there. And as lookouts, they can spot things even if the ship's power goes out, today having the navigation bridge up high and close to the bow allows them to do those same duties from inside the safety of the bridge. -This information all relates to ocean liners and cruise ships, not military vessels. One of my earliest and clearest memories as a child of five and a half started on the boat train to Southampton which ran on steam. Later that day we waved to the Queen Mary as she sailed up the Solent. I was standing on the Starboard side of her sister the Queen Elizabeth right between her two funnels on our way to Cherbourg then to New York. It was late january 1965.

What a beautiful ship, I wonder how many watertight bulkheads it has, it's reported that the ship's maintenance has been neglected for decades, especially to its bulkheads, and is in need of costly repairs, and may sink in case of flooding.
@AlextheHistorian
@AlextheHistorian Жыл бұрын
The ship's engineering and cargo spaces are separated into 18 watertight compartments. The ship was in need of certain repairs and renovations, but the media made it sound worse than the situation actually was. The ship was never at risk of sinking. The repairs you mentioned were completed over the course of the past year. Repairs to the bulkheads, brand new bilge pumps and water intrusion alarms, and the list goes on. The ship is also receiving cosmetic restoration as well. My channel actually gives periodic construction update videos. The last one was posted in April, the next one will be in mid-June. You can keep up with all the work being done on the ship as she enters a new age of restoration and popularity.

Because the video was never originally shot to be a tour. It was filmed as a vlog, and a year later I reused all the footage and carefully edited it into a video tour of the things I managed to see. A more in-depth, fully re-shot, purpose-filmed version will be posted in a few months. I'm currently having the ship re-filmed to include the way it looks now that restorations are underway.

@AlextheHistorian
@AlextheHistorian Жыл бұрын
Well like I said at the beginning of the video. This footage was not originally shot to be a tour of the ship. I filmed this footage as a vlog, randomly exploring the ship and pointing the camera every which way without particular reason. A year later, I realized if I heavily edit the vlog and the extra footage, I can turn it into a video tour. So I had to slow down footage where I only briefly had the camera pointed at the place I wanted to talk about. I've slowed down several pieces of footage in this video.

What about the alleged ghosts? Did you see or hear something?
@AlextheHistorian
@AlextheHistorian 2 жыл бұрын
@Pies Rosario, it makes me sad to see you comment that, because it reminds me what it was like to take a tour aboard the ship. The tour guide would take us around and explain the fascinating history of the ship, me and my friends were the only ones in the group completely enamored with the history, but the other visitors were just looking around, and after the guide finished speaking, finished telling an amazing story, the only thing someone asked her was "but what about the ghosts, did you see a ghost?" I was shocked that that was all they cared about. I looked at the tour guide and I saw the enthusiasm and the light leave her eyes.

@@AlextheHistorian Then she probably needs to find another place of employment because one of the main draws of the ship are the ghosts and alleged hauntings. If the director who runs the tour was smart, they would add that information as part of the dialogue.

This might be hard to believe, but the Queen Mary being marketed so heavily as a haunted ship, is one of the main reasons the ship came close to being permanently closed and scrapped.

It makes me frustrated to see her being used in clickbait thumbnails for fake ass ghost stories. The only true "ghost story" was when she rammed her escort by accident and sank it with around 400 dead. It just makes me sad to see her being treated like a money pit. The steamer rotterdam a Dutch ocean liner (which is also preserved in the same and my country) is not being treated like a ghost ride at least and is properly maintained honestly i blame Disney for making up these fake stories.

Late next month I'm going to release a newly-filmed and much more detailed narrated tour of the Queen Mary. Much of her has been restored since I last filmed for this video. I personally don't feel creeper out on the ship, especially now that her lights have been repaired, she's much brighter now.

The ballroom in the movie was not filmed on the Queen Mary, it was 100% a movie set piece built on a sound stage and doesn't look like any room on the Queen Mary, but if I had to guess, they took some inspiration from the First Class Lounge on Promenade Deck. Queen Mary's ballroom was divided into other rooms on the ship.

Because the old lady is retired. She sailed between 1936 and 1967, having served for 6 years in World War II as a troopship. She did her duty, and retired with love and praise.

Oh no, I'm only 1:05 into the video and I see that abomination in the background, 'Carnival Inspiration'. I'm looking at you Joe Farcus. Let's move quickly past that monstrosity! 10:00 I would love to see all that wood paneling restored back to 1936 and the rest of the ship too to that time! 18:17 A list of the names and cause of death onboard for those interested. 23:36 There's a very famous photo of Captain Smith taken onboard the Titanic from below looking up to the Bridge-wings where he was standing. I think it's the last photo taken of him.

Interior of the Queen Mary is not as elegant as the Titanic. Really like the Grand staircase in the Titanic it's beautiful!

Excellent video. It brings back lots of fun memories. I used to go down to visit the Queen Mary at Long Beach since I was always in the area for an annual convention that was held in the arena near there. I could literally see the smoke stacks when I went outside every lunch time. I was always fascinated with ships so it was always a treat to go there a little later in the week. I haven’t been out there since about 2014, though, and I miss it. It’s nice to see the grand old girl hasn’t gone anywhere. I’m sorry to hear the Russian sub Scorpion has fallen into disrepair, as I always loved exploring the sub before going on the ship. They are two very different parts of history, but they complement each other and should be restored and preserved for future generations to enjoy.

It's a relic , if the city and the public want to keep it afloat they can spend the money or not , if it can't pay its way then scrap it or scuttle it at sea
@AlextheHistorian
@AlextheHistorian Жыл бұрын
Actually it does pay its way. It generated a profit of $11 million a year, but the previous operators chose to not re-invest that money in the ship, but instead to pocket the money. This year alone, while not even being open, it generated over one million, and the city put that money back into its repairs.

History should not be just left for capitalism..like if Pompeii does not get enough revenue from tickets lets rise it to ground and make something profitable

I've stayed aboard the Mary several times during the "aughts". The door to the swimming pool was closed, and you couldn't see the boiler rooms like you showed here although the engine room was accessible. Always loved this ship!

What if they would have kept the Queen Mary as she was and allowed you to tour every inch of the ship?

Then she probably would have been so popular, she wouldn't have undergone 30 years of neglect from 1990-2020.

@@AlextheHistorian isn't that what they did with Queen Elizabeth in Port Everglades and found people wandering all over the ships decks?
@AlextheHistorian

Queen Elizabeth never had the chance to be converted into a tourist attraction or hotel. They did give a few tours, but it wasn't like the Queen Mary at all, people weren't allowed to be on the ship unsupervised. And there was no power or water available on the ship. She was dark and decaying in the Floridian weather.

My Son surprised me in 2019 by booking a room on the Queen Mary Hotel when we were on a Route66 trip.With both my sons I had a great time taking all three tours of the ship. I always have loved Art Deco and the ship was fantastic to see. I just wished I could possibly had seen the other great art deco ship the Normandie.

I hope I am not spamming, but I am watching this video for the 12th time and I am thinking about what you said yesterday on why Queen Mary is failing. I used to be a full believer of Queen Mary being haunted. I thought her being haunted added to her story, but now I am questioning if she was ever haunted. But Haunted or not, as much as I love the Haunted Mansion, Queen Mary is no haunted Mansion and I hate what Corporate Disney did. Dishonorable and disgraceful. I think it's high time people people stop marketing Queen Mary as a Floating haunted Mansion and market the ship for who and what she really is, a Queen, a luxury Liner with a wonderful history. A family friendly ship. Market Queen Mary the way Cunard did. I recommend reopening the First Class children's playroom, so that kids can play. Give her a real air conditioning system. I really hope going forward, Long Beach takes better care of her and gives Queen Mary the proper respect. Oh, just imagine if Queen Elizabeth 2 the person was treated the way her Grandmother's ship is being treated
