Do you feel like your images should/could be sharper? How many images from each shoot would you classify as blurry? Are you struggling to get that tack sharpness in your portrait, landscape, or product images?
In this video, we explore the main reason beginner and intermediate photographers struggle to get tack sharp images in all situations. Hint: it all has to do with shutter speed.
If your shutter speed is too slow, your camera will capture your movement as the photographer as well as the movement of your subject. This movement leads to images looking blurry and lowering your consistency of capturing crisp, sharp images.
Both learning how to control your shutter speed and learning some good benchmarks for the different subject matter you photograph is key to maximizing the percentage of sharp images that you shoot.

Great tips. I know it's a compromise, but I'll usually take a sharp image over noise. My tip I'll give I was actually told by another pro when shooting presentations/podium shoots - 125 shutter is bare minimum, Yes, in low light situations you sometimes have to push the ISO further than you'd like but it's worth it. I photographed some executives recently doing a presentation and I was seated so I said "1/60 is OK". Guess what? - when I previewed a few during the shoot I realized too many weren't sharp enough. When I pushed the ISO to give the one extra stop going to 1/125 the results were consistently better. Sometimes it is a game of inches - little things do make a difference.

There are more factors that can make photos unsharp. The aperture: Lenses are generally sharper two stops from maximum aperture. i.e. f5.6. Stopping too far down (f22 or f32) will cause diffraction and loss of sharpness. Exposure: Especially with film, overexposure can cause a loss of sharpness.

Unless your a specialized professional possessing limited production-run photo/cinematography uber-glass made by Zeiss, Schneider, Rodenstock, etc. I remember when my dad, who worked for NASA, took me to a lens factory in Rochester NY and I saw a batch of photo lenses being ground, individually checked under an interferometer and painstakingly hand assembled. As a kid I asked, why couldn't a Canon or Nikon lens be used. The gentlemen replied that those lenses serve a purpose very-well but ultimately are toys.

This was very helpful. I've been having problems with focus and sharpness. I've been shooting for 45 years, mostly analogue. It was never an issue. Got some interesting tips from a knowledgeable guy a good camera store. One tip was to shoot in bursts, and crazy enough, it helped somewhat as the subjects were moving slightly. My Fuji x lenses zoomed out to 300mm go down only to f5.6. Big problems in low light. Under exposing by 1 stops helps a little. My hand's pretty steady still. It seems the more advanced the camera and lenses get, the worse my pictures get. I can easily throw out half of them and that used to be a much higher percentage when using analogue and fast lenses.

There’s also another aspect which you missed, pixel count. Having a 61mp image with say a 85mm lens is an equivalent of using a 135mm lens on a 20-24mp camera (roughly I don’t know the exact formula) because when you view it at 1:1 pixels it’s tighter in.
@branbroken
@branbroken 2 жыл бұрын
I wouldnt say its the same exactly as you always have more data and flexability with the wider shot at higher Mpx, however i get the point your trying to make yes using a camera with higher Mpx and shorter focal length can produce the same result when cropping as a longer focal length on a smaller sensor (provided your using a good quality lens.) This is why you can produce almost identical images with aps-c and MFT cameras that you can with full frame/35mm film cameras. The limitation is usually the ammount of light captured you often can't get aparature wide enough to match for a FF equivalent (i.e. when you do the math you can find you would need aparatures of

I remember when i was a kid, i found an old analog camera of my grandpa. So i bought some film and just started shooting random stuff. And i remember thinking to keep my shutter speed high, because my experience has taught me that most of my pics were not sharp due to my own natural movement.. Anyway.. developed the pics and most of them were completely black! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I think back then the digital camera's already existed, it's so nice to be able to see the result immediately after you took the pic. I ran into the problem that i couldn't remember the settings i used, so i guess i made the same mistake more than once. Anyway, Quickly stopped with the analog camera, i was still learning/experimenting with photography and couldn't afford the cost of film and developing mostly underexposed (read: completely black) pictures.

I've been shooting events professionally for about 3 years, it's definitely one of the hardest things to shoot out of any shooting I have done. There is light/vs no light will play in hand, movement from the artist, knowing what lens will be best for what and if you can get it. But if you shoot events, you will learn quickly and be able to do everything else with ease lol.

@@tacocat1705 hey, the process varies a little bit between cameras, but first you'll need to get a "lens focus calibration kit", usually about $10 on Amazon. Set it up across the room,camera on a tripod and focus on the center of the calibration tool. There should be a menu item in your camera to calibrate or adjust focus, something like that. You'll take a series of photos until it's tack sharp, but you'll also need to do it for each lens you use

1/focal length came from 35mm. With a APS-C sensor the same lens will cover a tighter angle so camera shake will be magnified over the same focal length used with a 35mm frame. Which means that the rule isn't adequate.

The speed of the shutter is in conjunction with the length of your lens the longer the lens the more the camera picks up shake the shorter the lens the less likely this will happen so when using a telephoto lens 250th of a second and up 50 mm lens you can get away with a slower shutter speed! yes if the the subject is moving you need to up the shutter speed to freeze motion!

there's also getting Ansel Adams style tack-sharpness. Shooting a landscape, locked out on a tripod, and it's still soft? Especially softer in your corners? Every lens has a "sharpest" f/stop. Look it up for the lens you're using. Although a safe bet is between f/6.7 and f/13, f/8 being a pretty common. (this will also help correct aberrations if your subject is high contrast) If you like soft luxurious bokeh and want to shoot wide open, and still have a razor sharp subject, you're going to need some expensive glass.

Be careful with opening aperture as due to depth of field this can also create blur in parts of the photo. That’s an effect we sometimes want, but not always. Additionally, pushing up,the ISO too far creates noise. A certain amount can be corrected in processing, but only to a point. Everything has a trade off. It’s a constant balancing act.

Want to learn how to take sharp images, learn the basic mechanics of photography stop relying on on the camera to take care of all your settings, shoot with a film camera and take your time, set your shutter speed and aperture manually. Buy yourself a light meter learn how to read it and understand what those readings mean. Spray and pray is not photography it is luck of the draw. Remember owning a camera doesn't make you a photographer anymore then owning a pipewrench makes you a plumber. Photography is a skill learned by practice and mistakes, don't depend on your camera to take good images, the camera is a tool much like a hammer, there are amazing photographers who have taken beautiful images with a pinhole camera.

Tks for this great video. Spot on. One of the key take-aways is to master sharpness before chasing bokeh effects and other stuff. Do send me a link if u have a video on night photography. Tks

A tripod, or even monopod, help with personal shake. Still need to think about subject movement.

I go by focal length when setting my s.s. With my 150-600 mm Tamron I usually go no less than 1/1250 sec unless the subject is sitting very still and then I can get away with 1/320 sec-1/640 sec with my in lens VR turned on. i get some good pics that way with lower ISO.

I can't tell if my monitor is showing the video 'Sharply', cuz it looks like you forgot to iron your shirt. LOL. Great pointers. I wonder if some of these issues are due to all of the automation in modern cameras. Thanks.

Biggest challenge for me is getting the photo fast enough as a moment passes. Shutter speed has to be low enough for moving subject’s, aperture often wide open due to low light, ISO is at above 5000 … sure with RAW some underexposure can be dealt with, but in the end it’s about either taking many photos and hope for the best or throw a full frame camera with a prime lens at the problem.

I think you meant to say "shutter speed HIGH enough for moving subjects"? 🙂

Trying to locate a comment I heard, not sure if it was you but something about the Sony AF using phase detect in only certain focus area modes like zone?

And what if my camera doesn't always produce sharp photos even when I'm shooting 1/500 at 100mm, auto focused few times? It's probably bad lens? Using Nikon D5500 and Sigma 18-200mm.

Great video! What are your recommendations for dancers? I'm going to shoot a group of dancers next week and it's my first time doing it. I have done a little research. Do you think I will be okay on Aperture Priority while keeping a close watch on ISO to make sure the shutter speed is fast enough? Any recommended shutter speeds to aim for? They will be dancing and also holding poses... so will need to adjust accordingly
