RN & CRNA School with NO STUDENT LOANS!!!!

This is video is all about how I paid for my ADN, BSN and now my CRNA degree with ZERO STUDENT LOANS and NO DEBT!!
I am not rich and I did have any family financial support. When I was 18 I was surviving off waitressing with no financial education at all. No matter what your financial situation is, you can do this too! There is no magic formula. You just need hard work, dedication and patience. The days of crippling student loan debt need to come to an end.
The reason being debt free is so important to me is because I never want to have a financial obligation to anybody whether it be a person, hospital or lending company.
I know not everyone wants to wait until they have enough money saved to further their education. The great news is you don't need to, there are many options out there for tuition reimbursement! I made a video all about this that I will link below:

Lastly, if you decide that taking out student loans is the right decision for you please do your research first. Make sure you understand what you are agreeing to. Try to minimize your debt before starting school (ex. sell your car and buy a used one to eliminate your car payment). Make a budget during school to minimize the amount you need to borrow. Develop a plan to pay them back after graduating.

I cannot even begin to explain how much of an inspiration you are to me. I royally screwed up my freshman year of college, I put my parents in debt, I was an art major and I hated it, I flunked so so badly. I decided I wanted to be a nurse and went back to school and my grades, my emotional happiness, and my drive to be successful has skyrocketed ten-fold. Because of what I did to my parents, I would do ANYTHING to be debt free continuing my education and I am so driven to do whatever it takes, especially after watching this video and so many of your other videos. I wanted to be a dr for the longest time hence the bio major but last year my junior year when I visited one I just felt it in my heart that being a dr wasn’t for me but I was already 80 credits into my 120 credit program so I just decided to finish. I think they can be done responsibly! I think the big thing is just self control and living within your means when you start making more money than you're used to. I don't workout on days I do 16s 😂 I plan my workout schedule around school/clinical and try to get in 4-5 days a week. Some days it's only 3 though when things are crazy!

I can speak from having $45,000 student loan debt after graduating with my BSN. I took travel contracts after working one year at a staff position and followed Dave Ramsey’s steps to paying off loans. I spent wisely during this time and I paid off $45,000 in one year!

One thing that I find positive about myself is my dedication and how hard i work. I am 17 and currently still in high school and graduating early in December. Hahah!! My fancy dinners now will be Chipotle too! Rhianna, was curious to know what input/opinions you had regarding becoming a CRNA or a ACNP. I love the idea of both. I get worried that with CRNA I do will not get too involved with disease processes as I would with ACNP, however, I feel ACNP will only be a profession that will over work me with things that MD don't want to deal with and give me crappy hours. Obviously I do not know a lot about either profession. But I currently work in a MICU and love the pathophysiology of disease processes. What made you want to do CRNA and not something like ACNP that would keep you involved with critical patient care?

I actually just ate chipotle for dinner tonight haha I did consider both career paths but I was more passionate about anesthesia so my choice was easy. As a CRNA you manage patients during their most vulnerable time and their life is literally in your hands while they are with you. You have to consider all of the disease processes your patient has every time you make a decision. You must also understand the pathophysiology of the diseases in order to make the best decision. A few reasons I like anesthesia: it is hands on patient care, it's shift work (aka no continuity of care, something different every day) and it is so complex. We take care of ICU patients, trauma patients, adults, children, etc. Cases may be routine or emergent. I love the variety. NPs are more involved with the patient's disease management. If you are passionate about longer term disease management then you may consider ACNP more fulfilling. Have you shadowed a NP or CRNA yet? That may help you understand their roles better and figure out which one you are more passionate about!

You are only 27 its never too late. Some ADN to BSN program takes a little as 1 years maybe 18 months.

I was wondering with your experience, does attaining your BSN from an online college make it harder to get into a CRNA program being how competitive it is?

Hi! I have heard it can affect your chances of getting in but that is here say from nurses/CRNAs. I didn't hear that from an actual school. My JMU program was online but since JMU has a physical nursing school I didn't foresee that being an issue. My transcripts show the classes as if I were on campus. I would be careful which online school you choose and recommend choosing one with a physical campus/nursing school. Also if you know what CRNA school you'll be applying to be sure to ask them because they will have more specific advice for you :)

How’s crna school compared to nursing school?

The biggest differences are: - it is much more time consuming - we are learning a lot more information in shorter periods of time - the information/understanding is on a deeper level - there are more exams - it builds upon everything you learn throughout nursing school and nursing so if you don't have a good grasp on a concept you have to learn it before you can begin understand the anesthesia part

Congratulations, December is so soon! I started in SICU too, it's a great place to start. Be patient with yourself in the beginning. Being a new nurse is a huge learning curve especially in ICU. It will take a while to feel comfortable/confident and that is completely normal. Don't be afraid to ask questions! Use your preceptorship/orientation time to learn everything you can. Utilize the people around you and ask for help if you need it. Progress > perfection!

I did it for 2 years and spent most of my time in California. Northern California pays very high. I also went to Hawaii and did a crisis pay assignment in DC! I was saving before I started travel nursing as well so I didn't save that entire amount in those 2 years. You could though if you took all high paying assignments and saved everything!

I usually find these jobs by googling "CRNA job student loan repayment" and then indeed or some other job search site brings them up. There is another website called gasworks.com that has anesthesia jobs only and it's very helpful. I haven't been seriously job searching yet, just browsing. Another way you can find out is by calling HR and asking if they offer it at hospitals you are interested in.

In CRNA school, if you mess up, are the professors/helpers very critical of what you do, or are they supportive and understanding? Ive heard a rumor, that in medschool/Anesthesiologist training that they are very supportive and understanding if you make mistakes, but in CRNA school they will get mad at you if you make a mistake and are not very supportive emotionally in your success. 15. I really need help on this question: Why would you recommend being a CRNA rather than an anesthesiologist? What are the main reasons you chose this path? Because im on the road towards a CRNA, but im still iffy if i want to go to med school instead. 16. Have you worked side by side Anesthesiologists? Keep in mind that all depends on where they are working, what hospital they work for, how many hours they work, overtime, etc. 7. Where I currently am if I made 200k I would probably take home between 130-140k. It also depends if you are a 1099 or W2 worker. Typically 1099s are responsible for all of their own expenses including malpractice, health insurance, retirement, etc. 1099s typically get paid more for this reason. W2s receive benefits and their malpractice is usually covered by the hospital. 8. Are the majority of CRNA's hourly or salary? - from what I have seen more are hourly 9. If CRNA's are salary and go over 40 hours a week, to they get paid overtime (time and a half)? on top of their salary? - Everywhere I have been yes they do 10. Or do they try to keep you under 40 a week? - It depends on how well staffed they are. If you work in an understaffed are you will likely have no trouble getting extra hours. 11. Are most full-time CRNA jobs around 40 hours a week? - Full time is 40 hours a week but many CRNAs work part time as too 12. If CRNA jobs are around 40 hours a week, is it common the CRNA's work another job part time or a few hours a week? - Yes this is very common. Some work 1-2 shifts a month at other places for a high hourly pay rate. 13. Weird question: Lets say i work at a hospital, and my child/family member needs an operation. Can you preform as the CRNA in these cases, and do you also avoid paying for alot of other stuff, since you are an employee of he hospital? Or would you basically just be cutting the price of having an anesthesia provider in the operation, since you are doing it? - No it would still have to be billed per the policy. I also am unsure if they would let you do a family member's anesthesia. I don't know the legal implications. 14. Of course not everything has been sunshine and rainbows but overall I have had a great experience. You are expected to be very well prepared every day and to ask questions if you are unsure of something. As SRNAs we are held to a very high standard. 15. I really need help on this question: Why would you recommend being a CRNA rather than an anesthesiologist? What are the main reasons you chose this path? Because im on the road towards a CRNA, but im still iffy if i want to go to med school instead. - That depends on what your goals are. I love nursing and never considered med school. I knew I wanted to be an ICU nurse and then a travel as a nurse. I didn't even know what a CRNA was until I was actually in nursing school. 16. Have you worked side by side Anesthesiologists? Or worked under them, where they are supervising you? Basically my question here is: Do you usually get along with them, are they nice to CRNA's? - Yes I have in more than one hospital and yes they were nice and respectful of the CRNAs. 17. From talking with other CRNA's, Do they tell you that they have a lot of "autonomy"? or does it seem a lot of them work under Anesthesiologist. And if they do work under them, do they still have a lot of autonomy? - Where I have clinical they have a lot of autonomy. I also know several CRNAs who work in CRNA only practice as well. I feel like I have said this too many times but it really depends on where you are lol 18. In terms of U.S. laws, do you see the future of CRNA's bright? Like do you see CRNA's being able to work independently in more and more states? And are CRNA's probably becoming more autonomous ? - Yes I do! I see advanced practice nursing growing in general. There are many people advocating for expansion of independent practice. CRNAs (and APRNs) provide safe and cost effective care. 19. What are the types of CRNA jobs we should watch out for? (in a bad way) I know a lot of CRNA's work in hospitals where they rotate you around to do different procedures, but are there any types of jobs where you just say: "I dont wanna do this everyday" where the business has you doing the same types of procedures every day? - If you work in a large hospital (ex. UVA) you will be rotating around constantly. If you work in a plastic surgery clinic you will likely be doing the same procedures over and over. You can chose where to work based on what you like to do. 20. I am entering the Nursing program in 3 months at my college, im at a 4.0 GPA still, have alot of service, speak 2 languages, etc... Is there anything else i should do during this time to up my chances to getting in CRNA school? Or do you think im fine if i just continue to keep my grades up? - Wow that is awesome! If I were you I would focus on keeping that 4.0. You could also start considering where you might want to go to CRNA school and get an idea of any program specific pre-reqs they require.
