Most people DO show their id, and when you get your DL you can register in Europe you are automatically registered once you become 18, and receive ballots in the mail every election. When I lived in the city, I used public transportation and had no need for a drivers license. I know people who have vision and other problems that make it so they can’t drive and don’t have a driver’s license. I carry a passport card as proof that I am a US citizen, but many people can’t afford to get one. Foreign nationals living legally in the US carry proof of their status, but millions of US citizens have nothing to prove their citizenship. Requiring someone to get something that will cost time and money is a poll tax. Those were declared unconstitutional decades ago.

It's only in the 1980's or so that central State depositories of vital records were created. While I was able to get a copy of my birth certificate from 1957. I have highschool classmates from the next county over from where I was born that are completely out of luck as the county office building burned to the ground in the 1970's.

I've lost my SS card before and had to request a new one and it was very simple. There are multiple forms of ID accepted if you google "types of ID required to vote in USA". No one is opposed. Only citizens can vote. The problem is that laws are being made that require more and more proof. If you are old, your birth certificate is often not available. If you move a lot, you might not have the correct ID since different states have different IDs needed. If you are young, the ID needed to vote will take time to obtain, so you miss voting that first election. If you don't drive, you don't have a drivers license and if the state decides in August that you need a DL you will miss voting this time since it takes so long to get a DL the first time.

I have lots of high school classmates who cannot get a copy of their birth certificate as the county records office burned to the ground in the 1970's. It's not a rare story. I'm a little conflicted, simply because of timing. I do definitely support the requirement of being a citizen to vote. However, it feels like a disenfranchisement of a bunch of voters who are LEGAL immigrants not yet having completed the long process of citizenship. People who have previously voted, but now not being allowed. And the timing is pretty iffy if you ask me. LEGAL immigrants gung ho about voting for their preferred candidate in America, many excited about the chance to vote that they hadn't had in their previous country, or whatever, all of a sudden being told no.
