Famidaily - Episode 0215 - Moero!! Pro Yakyuu/Bases Loaded (燃えろ!!プロ野球)

One of the best selling Famicom games was also one of the worst ones for burning the people who ran out and got it right away. It's time for the least collectable Famicom game.
Famidaily is my attempt to catalog all of the commercially released Famicom games.

This is the infamous game that stores could not give away. I am glad you mentioned its meme status. My favorite is one fairly silly picture of a guy in a bathtub just bathing in the carts. Since it's from the 00s, the image is quite small. It was still a popular funny image at the time though (this meme goes way back.) Eventually, this game would get a parody years later, 燃えろ!!プロ野球2016. No one seems to remember it though, at least not on english speaking sites.

So glad the US release, Bases Loaded, had most of the bugs fixed. Most of the bugs....the unhittable "trick pitch" against the Computer/AI was still there. Most of the teams had at least 2 pitchers who could throw it. Many times I could throw a 27-strike out perfect game using 2 of those pitchers. The other bug of AI/CPU hitters over-running 1st base on a dropped fly ball and getting thrown out at 2nd was still there too. The "bunt" home run was gone except for the hitter named Paste (aka Randy Bass of the Hanshin Tigers) on New Jersey. Paste pretty much hit a HR every time, anywhere in the strike zone.

I had a friend in jr. high that had this... I was never really good at it but t least I could get a grip on the controls easily. I have heard about some of the notorious stuff like the bunting home run thing (which I was confused about until I saw this episode!!) and the monuments people would build with a mountain of copies, haha.

So it's like the Double Dribble of Famicom, at least in terms of perpetual availability for no appreciable cost. Double dribble was pretty fun though, this sounds dreadful.

I'm amused that it uses real players. The designated sluggers were guys like MLB players Randy Bass, Bob Horner, Boomer Wells and even Carlos Ponce.

6:06 awesome. Well reviewed bad famicom baseball but it sells extremely well. I’m sure those graphics really blew people away, so they got past an initial glance. Buuuuut - reviewers seem to be used to telling white lies.

Are you gonna review the revision of this game when you get there?

The problem with checking out revisions is that there's a lot of subtle ones that quietly slip out and nobody is really sure when they get released. It's not like Jaleco put a big sticker on the box saying, "Now with 90% fewer bugs!" Whatever version of the game is on the cart I purchased is what I'm playing, though I do try to get variations when I see them. However, when it comes to baseball games on the Famicom, a lot publishers changed some stats and re-released their game as a sequel or next year's version. So when I get to Moero!! Pro Yakyuu '88, it's almost the exact same game and we'll see the results of the bug fixes.
