So, Might and Magic 4 + 5 and 6 are perhaps my favourite dungeon crawlers ever. I spent an unhealthy amount of time with them in the past. 4+5 are just fun all around and 6 has my favourite dungeon designs in the series; I wish more dungeon crawlers were like that in this regard! I played through it again a few years ago and still find it great, despite knowing most map layouts by heart. 🙃3 is alright, though I found it quite hard back in the day. 7 and 8 are worse IMO (especially 8 - it's clearly unfinished) but still have some of that charm from 6. 1 and 2... couldn't ever get into them either, but I see how they'd be something novel back in the day.

MM7 is my favorite. It's one of my favorite games of all time, in any genre, on any system, actually.

I've never played any of these. FWIW, the incredible presentation goes a long way for me to consider a game being enjoyable or not. Even if it's difficult or clunky, I tend to stick with it. Whereas for something that's hideous, if it were difficult or clunky, I'd drop it right away. Shame about the bugs, though. I wonder if the NES localization fixed them. Have you played the PC-Engine CD port of this?

I have not played the PC Engine version. I know they made a version of III for the PCE and I've been meaning to get that.

A 4 megabit MMC3 game with battery back-up, expensive as usual. It's worth it though. I'd love to have this one in my collection, just to listen to that title screen, but since it's an MMC3 game I can just use my NES Everdrive and listen to the tune without missing anything... or play the NES version.

This one isn't too expensive. You can get it under 500 yen easily so if you ever get around to ordering a box of Famicom games from Japan, you might be able to toss it in. I've been meaning to upgrade to a boxed copy to accompany my other Might and Magic games and I'm anticipating sub-2000 yen for that.

Hey, babies, it's dangerous to go ahead! Speaking seriously, it is one of the most visually interesting games among Famicom WRPGs but menus are kind of unacceptable with the lack of HP status and some other quirks. You just can't do stuff like that.

I think my only experience with the might and magic games was gates to another world on genesis/md, I thought it was alright. don't think I really got that far (at least not without that cheat to stock up on extra gold and items) but man this one seems a hell of a lot harder.

I keep seeing people praise Might and Magic 3, 4, and 5... but they just don't do it for me (or at least 3 doesn't, and 4 and 5 look pretty similar). I found 3 to be way too easy, and the strategic role of spells in combat is so vastly diminished by the fact that you're only fighting three enemies at a time, at most. I much prefer the first game and the early part of the second (prior to the point where you can start power-leveling and completely screw up the balance of the game), as the challenge is still there and magic still plays an important role in combat tactics. I would've much preferred sequels that took the core gameplay of those titles and added some quality-of-life improvements to the interface... but that's just me. At a certain point these things all come down to taste, I suppose. ::EDIT:: ...although now that I'm watching the rest of the video and remembering those stupid fairies who drop your to-hit chance, yeah, that was total BS.

I actually found this game very fun, once you figured out its idiosyncrasies. You have to very carefully grind, though. I've played worse computer ports.

Wow, dungeon crawler plus bad design. Definitely not something I'd ever play. Thanks for the video though.

And unlike the Wizardry ports, it doesn't offer any improvement over the original experience.
