As someone who didn't have a NES or Famicom growing up, this game, Super Mario Bros. and Double Dragon were the only games in this series I got to experience in my youth through playing the Game Boy (GBC in the case of Mario) versions. I did go back and play through the NES version not too long ago and it definitely holds up as my favourite football game of the 8-bit era, and I don't like most football games which I think says something about the quality of this one 🙂

I feel kind of bad for not being as familiar with football as some sports played in the US. But there are some interesting 8-bit football games to go as at the end of 1990 Japan starts getting really into football for a few years. Even beyond Captain Tsubasa.

When in middle school on weekends lot of classmates used to stay in one mate’s home. And we always rented this one to play it 4 players. Well not exactly this one, but the version that was available: Nintendo World Cup.

You didn't have Goal!? That was very common in Argentina. This game was named Goal 3, because, you know, piracy

@@raulbargas5021 yeah that was another one but was not common until Konami released a game in snes, central america here btw, and yeah we have match day 2 too on the zx spectrum but that was more for rich kids in these lands lol

I had the GB port of this. It's been a long time since I played it, but I don't think it had any of the cutscenes or AI strategy bits. But it did add a crazy powerful backwards flip kick (press A+B) that made it pretty easy to score goals. It was a decently fun game. Didn't know there was a Mega Drive version!

This episode is not on the playlist. Anyway, I always found this one to be too simple, at least when playing against CPU. I prefer its sequel.

There is a more advanced version of this game with world cup mode, weather effects and more advanced moves and AI
