As children, my brother and I were swept out to sea by a Rip current. From standing in less than waist high water to being hopelessly out of depth took mere minutes. What saved us was our "game" of floating, which we often played . As I passed my brother I said to him we have to float, as we were simply not strong enough to fight the current or swim back to shore. This was the only thing that saved us and allowed others to bring us in. I have said for many years that all children and adults should be taught to float when in difficulty. I'm glad to see that floating as a means of preventing drowning is now being advocated. However I would add that in many circumstances even adults may not be strong enough to swim against adverse conditions and doing so could lead to exhaustion and possible drowning. So when in water and if in doubt - always float. It save lives ...

We teach this in all of our classes, it’s a part of being on the water that is so misunderstood. Great video.

Also happens as you leave warm water shallows and hit a deeper colder current from the depths. It can be surprising just how fast your diaphragm wants to do its own thing and start hup-hup-hupping, which tenses your muscles, which makes you thrash, which makes you sink. It nearly got me in the Aegean four years ago. Don’t let it get you. Float. Relax. Don’t panic. Don’t tempt fate to test your abilities.

Much more relevant to write only swim within your ability. If you're not sure, haven't swum for a while, don't know the spot where you are about to swim - just don't go in. Swim with others, pandemic allowing when possible, especially at new swim spots. Happy swimming

I really respect this information and I really respect the work the RNLI does for our country but when I’m watching light hearted tv next to someone close to me who’s little brother passed away from drowning at sea it was a bit too much for him to see the advert. I understand it’s shock factor and important information but please can you put your logo or something as a pre warning to those who this may be hard to see? I mean this from a completely on board place because I really respect everything you do and it’s an important message to send out but for the people who have lost loved ones to drowning this is extremely triggering especially when it’s an unexpected advert

@Raaaach92 5 жыл бұрын
Mario Lisa did I say it was a bad advert? I said it was an important message. But unless you’ve experienced losing someone in the manner you have absolutely no idea of the affect it has on someone unexpectedly. Don’t be so insensitive. All I asked was they put their logo at the start so if you are watching you know what’s coming.

@@Raaaach92 I think that's more than fair. If one were to play devil's advocate though, you could argue that if the logo comes first, then whoever is watching might already have a preconceived idea of what's coming and tune out what follows vs showing them viscerally what's going on and why it's important because it draws you in. Not saying it's perfect, but just another perspective to consider, especially if it can help many others avoid the pain that your friend has to deal with.

I don’t even go near the oceans and seas, or even in cold water - I don’t take boats, and I don’t fly. I’m a shut-in Gamer, so why is this being advertised to me? *yes, I know it’s meant to be informative, but isn’t google supposed to give advertisements related to my searches and such?*

Trust me it's works, as I'm not the Strongest of Swimmers, it's about Controlling your mind not to panic, if you stay calm and Don't flap all over the place, you will float, I used to Dread swimming at school, as I was Always the kid who Nearly Drowned trying to get the Brick the Teacher Throw in the Deep end, but this video Definitely has helped me, when it was first on TV, as Nearly Drowned in Newquay this one time, falling off a jet ski without a lifejacket, but this video Suddenly came to mind when, As I was flapping all over the place, I had to really Concentrate, and tell myself to stay calm

It's much easier to float in the sea because the salt content helps you float. Just lay back, spread your arms and relax. Keeping a little air in your body helps too i.e. don't fully exhale.
