The three affordable model sizes of the Road Chariot Wheelchair Motorcycle were planned: City (45 mph) Highway (55 mph), and Freeway (75 mph) at prices similar to standard motorcycles for non-disabled bikers!
The Road Chariot Project was shut down due to bureaucratic impediments to innovation with the exception of 1 unit delivered to a very lucky veteran in Iowa which was freed after 10 months from a customs Warehouse thanks to the team of now retired Senator Harkin from Iowa who also was instrumental in the creation of the ADA in the US.
The Road Chariot started with a Suzuki Burgman executive motorcycle. The exact same bike was produced by Suzuki for both the US and Brazilian markets, but received a different VIN code stamped into the frame. the modifications to turn it into a road chariot were being performed by a Brazilian partner Freeway Motorcycles. Unfortunately, the whole project was blocked by the US Dot and EPA based on archaic protectionist policies created up to satiate the lobbyists for domestic auto manufacturers such as Ford and GM. Which only have serve to stifle innovation and claiming domain on anything that uses gas and runs on a road larger than a 50cc weed wacker engine. all the paperwork assumed we were importing an entire shipload of cars. While there was exceptions written into the 80-page manuals which we read word for word for handicapped modified Vehicles. Both the dot and EPA said they had never allowed those exceptions and weren't about to start!
While the one unit was released and it's more than $15,000 in custom's warehouse fees disappeared, and we were basically told "I don't try it again you little shits!" we could make it out of a red wagon if we wanted as long as we did it here in the US, or in this case if we had used Suzuki Bergman's purchased in the US then exported to Brazil modified and then re-imported into the US in the volume of an entire ship load while providing 3 to be crash tested (A rule for a car not really appropriate to a motorcycle).

This summer I just acquired a 1982 Honda CM 450 with a Tomco Wheelchair Sidecar that allows the occupant to drive from the sidecar. I am going to be using it as a lower speed platform for development and prototyping of universal design handgrips and controls to accommodate all abilities including quadriplegics with our movement but little or no hand dexterity. We want something that works for folks with MS, stroke, etc. etc. as well as paraplegics and quadriplegics from spinal cord injuries, etc.

Hi, I am wondering as a wheelchair user myself. How well does the wheelchair hold up in an accident. Say like a 30 - 40 mph speed. Head on? From the side? From the rear? And, in the odd case a roll over? I ask because I do not know of any wheelchair, power or manual, or scooters that are rated as DOT safe. And, would insurance cover someone using a wheelchair as the seat with it not meeting the DOT requirements? As thye could claim that it was not equipped with proper road safe seating? :)

Crash testing a scooter or motorcycle? They're not exactly designed to protect the rider in an accident. However this would obviously protect a person more than a motorcycle. You might want to look at safety reports for family sedans and SUVs and minivans

How can a wheelchair like that one be considered safe on a motor vehicle? I am in a wheelchair and to use one with a docking station, you have to have one with a strong back and the seat can't come apart in a fender bender. Keep in mind that the person is handicapped and is easier to hurt in a crash - that has been documented. As cool as it seems, I just don't think it is safe. But then again, you can get a third - powered wheel with handlebars - these days. They clip to the chair and work like a trike. But it is just for off road so anyway...

Unfortunately, these are not available in India nor anywhere else in the world at the moment. We're in the final prototyping stages of a new all electric version much like the popular Tesla cars. As a wheelchair user that likes motorbikes all i can say to this is, Pass why have one of these when you can get an adapted harley trike!, ive seen someone here (on youtube) whose got one, and also seen wheelchair users riding two wheeled bikes that just have stabilizers on the back that lift up and down according to your speed, ok theres no wheelchair storage on them but its usable for messing around on. I know some have to stay in chairs but if im riding i want to sit on the bike, not in my wheelchair, its just not the same.

What you wanted was a mobility conquest. They were 1,000 CC BMW about the size of a minivan parked alongside. Also $70,000. After selling 50 units which was all the parts they had it took them 10 years to sell those they attempted to give me the company for free twice which I turned down. No market people can't afford $70,000. There are compromises. These are meant as community mobility vehicle which meets 95% of most people's travel around their local city. Yes it would be a bit difficult to roll a wheelchair up on top of a motorcycle while staying in the wheelchair and drive away. That's the whole intent of this. Pretty much requires three or four wheels. There are some two wheeled wheelchairs with gyros that balance based on the segway!

It was one bike with a custom frame and the second side was made to look like the first for the balance of weight, airflow, and cosmetics, and handling. Clearly you thought it was two bikes so the effect was successful. This project was more than 12 years ago. If you have strength and experience in design and fabrication, if you can transition from one prototype to any kind of volume production, you should design and build a wheelchair motorcycle and make it available, there are thousands of disabled people around the world just begging for a good solution. I will personally buy one from you. Innovation and creativity is always welcome. @@bethstone actually, yes I have. Both my mother and my grandfather owed ones. My dad has ridden motorcycles since before I was born. My one ex owned motorcycles, and even worked at a motorcycle repair shop, before opening his own. Another ex had a motorcycle that we road during lots of poker and charity runs, and rode to many bike rallies. I've ridden on their motorcycles with them too many times to count. So, I am well aware of what IS a motorcycle. Also, as I have ridden a scooter, I can say this IS a scooter. Just look at the front end, and the opening between that, and the seat. Motocycles don't have walk/step through designs. Also notice the engine is in the back portion, exactly like a scooter, and not between the legs like a motorcycle. Maybe you should do some research first before telling me what something IS or ISN'T. Note: I'm not talking about a scooter that you stand on, and push with your other foot like a skateboard with a stick/handlebars. I'm talking about a scooter/moped such as a Vespa.
