Would definitely have preferred a GTB over my GTS.. and this looks like it really handles. The GTS just can't with such a flexi chassis.. but one area in which the InfluEnzo scores over this is sound. The bespoke silencer with unequal length pipes really make sit sound like a proper Ferrari. This one still seems to have the angry 4 cyl sound that i've come across on other 308s!

Wow. I can't believe how much these go for now. I had a hound of a 308 GTB in the late 90s. I bought it from a customer for next to nothing, tarted it up and sold it after a year of unreliable motoring. I thought the £10k I eventually sold it for was a good profit! Good grief.

My brother had one of these (vetroresina) Down Under in the 1980s when no-one wanted the fibreglass models. He converted it to a GTS using factory parts. It was brilliant. With the driver's window down the scream of those 4 twin throat Webers on full song shrieking through the door intake was eargasmic! Of course he had a moustache and a Hawaiian shirt!

When I was a schoolboy in the 1970s/80s my friend’s Dad worked for a well known advertising company in London. His company cars were Ferrari 308s. The first was a 1977 fibreglass body version, carburettor 308 GTB. The second was a 1981 308 GTS…exactly like the one in Magnum. We truly used to think they were out of this world! He never used to (knowingly) let anyone drive them. However, every time he went away on holiday my mate would turn their big house upside down and find the keys. He’d then chalk mark the garage floor around the tyres so they could be repositioned exactly where they were left. He’d then ‘nick’ them and we used to go out in them. After use, we’d return them to the garage and lightly sprinkle dust over them to make them look like they hadn’t been moved! 😂 There were no speed cameras in those days and my mate would drive them like a complete nutter. I remember when he undertook on the inside (!) a Lotus Esprit at over 120 mph on the A3. We had a few near misses in those cars. It surprising what we got away with really…..especially as my friend would let another mate drive it on his own through South London, on his own, aged 17 without even a driving licence! 😮 All was ok…..until one day in stop-start traffic in Brixton some twat in an old Volvo went into the back of him! It wasn’t ’bad damage’…but noticeable. His older brother, who was a Copper, said it was him that had been driving it and took the flak for mate! Each company car, after 3 years, became his own personal property. Each…….he basically just let rot away and decay until after his death they were sold for a pittance. 😢

This is a car I came to love in the 70's - 80's, when I was working at Sports Tune, a dealer of european cars, and high performance parts and tires. I was fortunate enough to drive a 308 Vetroresina when it was in for new tires - Michelin CN36's as I recall. The owner was a nice guy, and told me to take it out and scrub the mold release compound off the tires for 20 or so miles once the new ones were installed. And it was a revelation! The first mid-engined car I had ever driven, and so cool.... I owned a 240Z then, with many $$$ invested in upgrades for slalom racing, but that Ferrari! It changed my life.... I sold the 240Z and bought a brand new X-1/9, that I then took to 2nd place in class at the 1979 Canadian National Slalom Championships, running CN-36's that I had fallen in love with on the 308. Unfortunately, just a month later, that 308 caught fire and was written off and junked by the insurance company. The owner did buy a new Saab Turbo from me though... I would really love to have one, in good nick, today!
@ChristianRThomas Жыл бұрын
Isn't the X1/9 a great little car? I was pretty wowed with it - and hadn't expected much as I was well into my 30 years of Lotus ownership (then an Excel). But not at all! So much was so right with it and, most importantly, it was great fun. There was even something intangible that I felt was better than the Excel, which is one of the best handling cars of all time. Maybe the size and weight. I don't know if they are overlooked these days but I expect they are. Can the engine be bored out? The same engine in 2.0L would be something I'd want.

But it's a wonderful and different thing, value aside, not being precious and good condition, so it can be used and enjoyed without worry (relatively speaking). Also, how good does the engine sound, raw and animalistic, not artificially tuned to sound F1-ey. It sounds like my imaginary brm brm noises sounded like in my head as a kid....

A dream car of mine, probably Fioravanti's best design and apparently Giugiaro's favourite. I still have my Bburago 1/24 die cast from childhood. And I love the GTB, NOT the GTS. Carburettored Vetroresinas are cool, as are QVs, but if I had the money I would buy a GTBi and restomod it.
@RzogL Жыл бұрын
@richardharrold9736 Taste is subjective. Sure, the Daytona is a beautiful car, but to my eyes not as pretty as a Maserati Ghibli (especially a Spyder). For me it's the 308 GTB or the BB that are Fioravanti's best designs, and I don't know which of the two I love most. I am in something of a minority as I don't regard the 288 GTO to be better looking than the 308, the rectangular front grille and fog lights rob that car of some of the 308's beauty and the pumped up curves don't make up for that.
@RzogL Жыл бұрын
@richardharrold9736 The Khamsin was awesome! Another Gandini masterpiece. I prefer it to either the Ghibli or Daytona (it too has a bit of a reputation for being a bit agricultural to drive). The 365 GTC also intrigues me. But much as I admire fast GTs, it's the mid-engined 70s wedges that really do it for me. They tend to be purer than the 80s cars that followed, where they really did overdo it with the scoops and wings.

I'm not of big fan of Ferraris. Seem to be. Ery expensive cars that you can't drive because they'll just break. However the 288/308/328 look is just beautiful. Maybe it's because I was a kid in the 80s but they just look like exactly what a fast car should look like.

I love old Ferraris, Lamborghinis, etc and they are definitely finicky and a task to maintain. That can be said about any classic car. You would have the same maintenance issues with a Ford Highboy, Tri-5 Chevy, early Mustang, Camaro, Mopar, etc. They're not daily drivers. Modern offerings from most companies who sell high power, limited production models are pretty good for regular usage but never are because they the owners are afraid of hurting the value by driving them.

The appeal of the Ferrari 308GTB/S is, sadly, lost on me. This is despite it being one of only three Ferraris of which I have any practical (albeit passenger) experience. Maybe if I got myself into the driver's seat for enough time, it would all slot into place and I could appreciate whatever it is that people witter on about when describing this series. Yes, it is very pretty, but I don't like the sound it makes and every V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft is to be regarded with distain. Proper Ferraris should have an engine where the cylinder count is a whole multiple of six. That said, it was a very interesting video of an interesting car.
