That’s my cousin Gary’s engine, Desmond. He was a road engine for Toowoomba roads board as it says on the canopy. Desmond is a very sophisticated piece of machinery because it was produced not long before steam was phased out of road machinery. Gary rebuilt it mostly himself as a massive Labour of love. He had it certified and registered as a vehicle, free to travel on roads!

I wasn't aware they even bothered putting shiftable gears on steamers - With all the torque they have, didn't think it was something that would have any prectical meaning! I've always been impressed by the demo where they run one onto a 60 degree ramp, then just keep it "hanging" there indefinitely by diddling the throttle - 0 RPM equals "All the torque there is!" - Looks like some kind of magic trick.

I knew a fellow a number of years ago who had a steam locomotive / tractor. It was a coal burner and had a full steering system and a truck transmission. I fired it for him once, he gave me hand signals on where to toss the small scoop of coal in the firebox for even burning. State laws require boiler certification for every state the "engine" operates in, so the paperwork was an added hassle. He gave it up after about a year, glad he had owned it for a while and equally glad to get rid of it.

I used to drive a 1911 Marshall 7nhp general purpose steam engine. It weighed 11.5 tons dry, and it had 2 speed gearing. Attempting to change gear whilst on the move was not recommended, but it could be done, although I never tried. My late Father in Law and I would steam it to local events, with a wagon in tow carrying extra coal, and more often than not my Son, Daughter, Nephews and Nieces. We always drew a crowd when we stopped too take on water, especially if it was from a stream that ran through a village. They were fascinated when the suction hose went into the water, and by turning one valve we could fill the tender in a few minutes, for free. Can't do that with EV's can you.
