Awesome interview! As a high schooler, I was in deep with The Replacements's lore. I was jealous of Tommy Stinson for leaving school to tour (we're about the same age). I read alot of Creem magazine, and they loved the 'Mats. Years later out of high school, I met Tommy at a Pornos for Pyros gig. He asked me if I had heard the opening band, The Flaming Lips. I hadn't until that night, but thought I they were from Mars and sounded beautiful. He said that someone from the band was at the 'Shit Hits the Fans' gig in OK. I told him I had tried to order the SHTF tape and the record store guy called me a week later to tell me they were out of stock, but he made me a cassette copy and I could come get it for free. Tommy thought that was cool. I thanked him for being who he was and we parted. Also, I was on two hits of acid during the conversation. 😅 Good times!

“Too dumb to realize how cool it was”. Pretty much summarizes the 1980s in Chicago for me. I saw all of these iconic ( Mats, REM, Husker Du etc) indie bands, for $5-10 a show. Fun. Wish I carried a camera, a diary and sobriety!

I did that at Blake high school - their dance - I played the Doors "Light My Fire" keyboard solo for as LONG as possible to drive people away. Glad to hear the Replacements were doing the same.

Love the interview. BUT. Uncle Tupelo's first record is one of my favorite records ever. It's up there with the Replacements. Those are my 2 favorite bands.

I never liked seeing the Replacements in concert for the very reason he stated. If anyone represents the Minneapolis Sound - it is the Replacements. Each album is a gem, and Westerberg was a great song writer.

He says he's not a "dirty laundry" kind of guy and then he goes on to say he never saw Bob washing his clothes and would always sleep in his clothes. Kind of funny that he turned out to literally be a "dirty laundry" kind of guy.

I wonder if they had been able to ask Bil what he thinks about the original mix version of DTAS that came out with the box set, if he'd change his mind. Then again, Stink is his desert island 'Mats album, so maybe not!

He’s mistaken about School Kids Records, it wasn’t in Columbus Ohio, it was in Ann Arbor Michigan where the University of Michigan is and the club he was most likely talking about there is The Blind Big.

Come on Gorman….. “the greatest rock n roll band”. They could barely play at a lot of shows. Nobody was great at their craft other than Westerberg as a writer. Others did the same schtick before them - Pistols- Ramones - the self sabotage thing. I have all of the Mats records and appreciate them but you sound like a total fanboy

Great rock and roll is chaos to me. Perhaps The Clash were a better band, but these guys epitomized what I feel rock should be. It's about hitting the wrong note at the right time, not the other way around.
