Road Rules: High Beam Headlights

This video was created to help better understand high beam headlights, and some of the issues around the headlight system. The road rule in this video is from the Road Safety Road Rule 2017 in Victoria, Australia. Reference link: www.legislation.vic.gov.au/in-force/statutory-rules/road-safety-road-rules-2017/020 Road Rule extract: 218 Using headlights on high-beam (1) The driver of a vehicle must not use the vehicle's headlights on high-beam, or allow the vehicle's headlights to be used on high-beam, if the driver is driving- (a) less than 200 metres behind a vehicle travelling in the same direction as the driver; or (b) less than 200 metres from an oncoming vehicle. I've seen someone on tiktok say when the headlights are on and especially at night that it's the "N stare" regarding the pic in your thumbnail. You don't want to receive the "N stare" for having your high beams on...

Road rule 219 is relevant too - “ A driver must not use, or allow to be used, any light fitted to or in the driver's vehicle to dazzle, or in a way that is likely to dazzle, another road user.” So if another car is more then 200 m away, you still can’t use your high beam if it’s likely to dazzle them in any way.

Correct. Basically, these bright lights are meant for when we are own our own at night. They light up the road further ahead so we can see any potential hazards, etc.

The elephant in the room, is LED globes. On these new cars, their fitted and angled down. All good if your on a flat road. Of course thats hardly the case, how often have you been blinded by an oncoming car thats on an incline, or better still, some wombat in an old 4x4 with aftermarket LED lights. Their absolutely blinding. To combt this with my falcon ute, ive installed a 24 inch lightbar on the nose, and two 54 inch lighbars on the forward ladder rack, and ive implemented a new policy 'your lights blind me, im returning the favour ten fold until you pass me'

I had someone coming towards me over a crest on a slight bend with their lightbars on and I could not see anything except light - I couldn't see the edge of the road, the centre line or even his car or where he was on the road. You deliberately put all your lights on and you're likely to cause the guy coming the other way to crash - and it could be you that he crashes into. Very petty-minded and totally irresponsible.
