Overall a great informative video showcasing the good and not so good experiences of owning an electric car with CCS 1 at time of recording; more specifically with the ID 4. It takes people like y’all documenting these road trips to keep pushing the industry forward. I own a Tesla Model 3 LR in Columbia, South Carolina but previously owned a 2018 Nissan Leaf. The Leaf was great if you only charged at home, but there is only 1 EA location within 80 miles of Columbia and the other networks like Blink and EV Go rarely work. In comparison we have 7 different Super Charger locations around the City with another location being installed in Downtown Columbia in Q4 of this year. Love the road trips with the doggies! Keep up the good videos. On side note, I actually graduated a year before Kaitlin from Waupun High School! Lol

Occasionally I'll try other networks and at best they're only a bit of trouble, but most often I end up regretting that I chose not to use a Supercharger. Using a Supercharger is much easier too: Park, plug in, walk away, and try to get your stuff done (food/bathrooms) before the car is finished charging. Super simple.

Those Petro chargers have been an issue for a while. I think most here have learned to avoid them. They are provided by a gas company that seems to not want electric charging to actually be successful. It’s been an issue practically since they installed them. Flo is the most reliable CCS around usually, electrify Canada usually has at least a few at each location working, and Ivy is hit or miss depending (but they are improving lately).
@midwest_ev
@midwest_ev Жыл бұрын
We didn't hit Flo on this trip but good to know. I did charge at a Level 2 station of theirs in Cincinnati that worked, for what it's worth. Petro Canada does seem to be a nightmare. Electrify Canada worked fine with the one station we tried (check out that video on our channel) and Ivy was average.

This is a great example of why, “it’s just a plug” rings hollow. The NACS connector is also the gateway into the far superior charging network.
@midwest_ev
@midwest_ev Жыл бұрын
I am hoping that NACS does improve things, but I don't think the plug is the only problem. It's also the networks and manufacturers that need to implement it correctly. CCS has all the capabilities of NACS but in a larger and less maneuverable form factor. I'd argue that CCS would have been fine if Plug & Charge worked and stations were reliable. NACS won't fix software and network issues overnight, but we can hope!
@gridjac

@@midwest_ev I agree, it’s definitely not the only problem. I’m hoping the competition from Tesla will drive the other charge point operators to improve their reliability, and I hope VW eventually follows Mercedes Benz as a German manufacturer adopting an easier form factor in the NACS connector. Thank you for the video. For me this was a real eye-opener. I got my first electric car in 2018 and it was a Model 3 long range. Back then it was either that or the Chevy Bolt that fit my budget. I'm not a Tesla fanboy or a techie, but recently I decided I wanted to get an SUV. Because I had 62,000 trouble free miles with the model 3, I ordered and took delivery of a 2023 Model Y Performance. It took a little over 3 weeks from the date of order till the day I picked it up in New York State and while I was waiting I was second-guessing myself because I didn't realize that the ID4 also qualified for the federal tax rebate and I think it's a great-looking SUV. But now that I saw your video I'm feeling good about my decision to be honest. In all the years with my model 3 and now with my model Y, I have never once experienced the kind of nightmare with charging that you had. I mean you were satisfied with 106KW DC charging rate? One thing that I can say is what the supercharger Network I use they simply just work and are fast. Living in Buffalo, I've taken several road trips in the US and Canada and never an issue. And I never realized the size of the connector on the CCS cars. It's huge! Anyhow I enjoyed the video, and I'm glad I don't have that kind of drama. I was wondering, do they make some kind of adapter where you can use the Tesla network? If they do I think that might work out good for you.

It will get better as infrastructure improves. I think that's the biggest problem for non-Tesla EVs right now. Assuming a charging station is working to its full capacity, stopping really doesn't add much time if you have a car capable of high speed charging. For example, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 can charge 5-80% in ~18 minutes. Very rarely would you ever have to charge beyond 80% while on a trip. For us, it's enough to walk the dogs, use the restroom, and/or grab a bite to eat.

While I'm happy you did make it to your destination, your video showed why the Tesla supercharger network is vastly superior to every other DC fast charging stations in North America currently. And why so many automakers within the last few months have made the announcement that they were going to switch their EV's over to use Tesla's NACS (North American Charging Standard) connector. With my Model Y, I have done road trips ranging anywhere from 500 miles to 6300 miles, and never ran into an issue at any supercharger besides waiting in line for less than 5 minutes at a busier one. I ran into broken stalls or ones that charged slow, but there was always 2-6 more stalls I could switch to. Europe definitely has it easier since they had all EV's adopt the CCS-2 connector, and their chargepoint operators mostly try to make sure the charging stations are working. Plus they have a lot less distances to cover unlike North America, which makes it easier to install those stations.

I'm sorry if it came across that way. It is frustrating to have to deal with issues like this but I still wouldn't trade the car.

Saw you turn into Petro Canada. NOOOO! IVY Roulette at Woodstock ONroute. The cheap one is nurffed... Supposed to be fixed now. There is a good shell recharge in London off 401. IVY is spotty too. Good IVY site in Brantford off 403.
