The old Holiday Inn was not at the EconoLodge location. It was actually on the corner of Orange and Williamson, diagonally across from Sheets. The car dealership on Williamson, across from the Roanoke Civic Center purchased the property, tore the Holiday Inn down and extended the car lot over the entire corner.

I don’t know if you’re aware of this, but the Days Inn Orange Avenue actually shut down. I’m not sure why, but I don’t know if that has anything to do with the fire

You want to know an interesting story, I26 is not an interstate yet because it doesn't meet the interstate highway requirements. Another interesting story is that it was actually rerouted from Gate City, Virginia to Niagara Falls, New York. It used to run from Jacksonville, Florida to Mackinaw City, Michigan. Below the TN VA line, it remained unchanged, but above, it was changed dramatically in terms of rerouting.

You know what? I actually found out that all elevators have a safety mechanism in the shaft, so if and/or when it falls, it stays in place, though you do have to call the fire department or 911.
