We took a road trip to Diani using the new route which helps avoid the notorious traffic jams and the hustle at Likoni ferry by branching off Mombasa Highway in Samburu, and then driving through the Shimba Hills. It took us roughly 2 h 1/2 hours to get to Ukunda, totally worth avoiding the jam in Mombasa, there was little to no traffic along this route but it does get tricky if it rains because of the red soil, one can easily get stuck, on the a dusty 23 km stretch to Kwale that leads you towards the Shimba Hills, up the slopes and towards the main gate of the National Park. The road is still untarmacked , and sometimes challenging when it rains.
We spent our stay at aqua resort in a two bed-roomed apartment the charges were 13,000 kshs /per night . it is not a beachfront apartment as its on the second row but they do have access to the beach through bahari dhow beach villas.
