Bayverse Optimus is so misunderstood. He was never meant to BE G1 Prime. He was his own thing. He was a more realistic take on a robot alien forced to take the leadership role in a universe scale war that spanned for millions of years. Unlike G1 Prime who was in stasis for that whole time. He’s portrayed as a battle hardened and weary soldier. And Bayverse Prime DOES have the core traits of Optimus. He IS kind, noble, and wise. He just has the added realism of knowing when to take names and not take shit from anyone. People love to complain about Bayverse Optimus’ flaws, but they never praise his good traits. Let’s not forget he would always place human lives first, even using his own body as a shield at times to block incoming attacks and stuff to protect the humans. And he literally sacrificed himself for Sam and was willing to use his own spark to destroy the Cube so that the war wouldn’t start again on Earth. On a few occasions he tries to talk reason or negotiate as well. The government wanted to get rid of them multiple times when all they wanted was a place to call home. The Autobots saved humanity three times by AoE and how did they repay them? They hunted them all down and used them to build drones out of his friends. Literally walking corpses. He was even told they weren’t “needed” anymore. So yeah, Prime has a right to be pissed and more cynical. And EVEN after all that, he still comes around and decides to protect humanity again. Not to mention in DOTM, Sentinel, his mentor and friend, betrayed them and killed Ironhide and was planning to enslave all of humanity. His execution was justified. Plus, Optimus tried to talk Sentinel out of it and even pleaded with him last second before Sentinel was LITERALLY going to stab him in the back. There’s a lot more reasons why Bayverse Prime is misunderstood but that’s what I could think of off the top of my head. He HAS the core traits. People just see the flaws which may I add, makes him more relatable and human that the cookie cutter perfect role model, almost no flaws type. He may not be for everyone, he may not be YOUR Optimus, but he’s still Optimus through and through. (I agree with a lot of your points though. I’m just tired of seeing the same misunderstood views on Bayverse Prime.)

I agree with this completely, and never once has he turned this ruthlessness on his autobots, with Sentinel, he had to, because Sentinel turned on him. TFP Optimus Prime never did what needed to be done, he did not have it in him to take care of Megatron, and I just wonder how many souls Megatron's soul was worth to TFP Optimus Prime, because a lot of his autobots and others paid the price for him not being able to do what needed to be done, and it is funny how so many people don't seem to see that. However, when Bay Optimus actually does do what needs to be done in order to try and prevent as many losses as he can and to protect others from Megatron and the Decepticons, he is treated as though he is doing something wrong. TFP Optimus Prime never learns the lessons he needs to until it has almost cost someone else, such as a the human child Raf, their life, only then will he step up and actually do something. I just do not understand how that can be overlooked so willingly, I mean were his Autobots lives not important to him, why only after the incident with Raf did he get angry, that is just so wrong to me.

It is HIS fault that the war has lasted as long as it did because he couldn't do what needed to be done. It had to be Bumblebee to finally end the war which is while subversive, not exactly what their rivalry was building to. I like TFP as much as the next guy. But in no way is it the pinnacle of TF media. And their Optimus also has issues.

My biggest issue with more modern depictions of Prime (and hell, protagonists and heros at all) is that they are boiled down to the single characteristic of sacrifice, and the context of the material they appear in defines sacrifice by a willingness to lose the things that are important to you for the sake of someone else.. but that entirely misses the point. The actions of the original depiction of Prime are read (within the source context) not as loss at all, but gaining himself through being what OTHERS would see as willingness to lose everything important to himself-- that's literally the whole point of why these sort of characters, stories, and lessons existed in the first place; seeing sacrifice as losing what matters defeats the true intent behind the action in the first place. See nothing as a loss; but an opportunity to shine through in the only way that matters-- when all the bullshit falls away, and you find yourself fighting an uphill battle, win or lose, what matters is who you are regardless of the outcome.

My version of Optimus is young, and if my transformers universe had a series, it would take place after a war, which plays a part in how he acts now. at the beginning, he'd be be sarcastic, bitter, and sort of depressed, however by the end of season 1, he'd begin to show, at heart, he is strong, but gentle, he just acts kind of like a bit of a jerk because, he is just bitter from the war, and it took a toll on his personality.

Optimus Prime was a Decepticon. -He never killed the enemy, in order to keep the war going. -He refused to give his troops strong enough weaponry to actually kill the Decepticons. -He wanted to depose Megatron, then merge the two armies. -He pretended to like and protect humans, in order to more easily steal energy resources. -The whole idea of being a Decepticon is to deceive everyone as to your true nature. I always saw him as a powerful and an amazing role model, mentor, leader and hero as a kid. Despite that I love the movie trilogy Optimus Prime design, I have to admit, him as an angry and a psychopathic leader was so unnecessary and I don't like it. I really love the aligned continuity Prime as a kid as well, even then I think that Optimus needs a bit fun and making some mistakes than him being too stoic and perfect. Honestly, I always thought that Optimus Prime and Bumblebee have the perfect father and son relationship. I hope we see more of that in the upcoming transformers rise of the breast movie. If it's okay, I'll like to ask a question, do you think that human characters in the Transformers franchise is relevant to you? For me personally, I really LOVE having humans in the franchise because not only are they likable, interesting and relevant, but also it shows that the transformers universe has other life forms for them to interact and team up with. G1 Optimus Prime in my opinion is just better he’s just has a lot of shown personality and development. G1 Prime is patience and optimism definition for the war against decepticons. Exactly. He is such a comforting character, kinda in the same vein as superman. I really hate when people don’t get characters like that, who are supposed to be a pillar of goodness, especially when things are bad. And those people just say: “Oh that isn’t realistic let’s make them an a-hole.” Like don’t adapt transformers if you don’t get the appeal of Optimus Prime I don’t know that to say. But his magic box haunts me. His box is everywhere: in the bushes, right off screen, everywhere. When Hot Rod became Rodimus Prime, he got a box, a magic box. Why is that? Does being a prime give you a box? When Optimus didn’t have the matrix, he still had his box, but when Hot Rod gave the matrix back, he lost his box. Was he just trying to be like Optimus? At one point the autobots drove through the entrance to a stadium, and transformed as they appeared in shot, Optimus was in front, and when he transformed, his box disappeared back into the shadows. But the problem is: it would’ve hit the other autobots. Is it a hologram? But that wouldn’t make any sense, we see it part the bushes when Optimus transformed in the forest. But it has to be a hologram. It always disappears. Always. But is Optimus has the ability to create holograms to some extent, why doesn’t he use it? Does he not have the ability to? Does every cybertronian have the ability to create holograms in close proximity to themselves if it specifically serves the purpose of helping them blend in better on alien planets? We know it’s possible for cybertronians to create holograms due to Mirage. But that was his Thing, y’know? Like lots of bots have their little special abilities and such. I don’t know y’all.

One of the best things made for Optimus was his Magic The Gathering card. Not for his colors, his stats, not even his (really good) effect. Its the title of the card: "Optimus Prime, Hero" and its his robot form and his vehicle form is "Optimus Prime, Autobot Leader" he's a hero first, everything else second. There’s a lot about the Bayformers I don’t like, but I actually appreciate Optimus’ brutality in those films. He’s noble, but deadly and ruthless against an enemy that demands ruthlessness.

I like to think of a middle ground of the idea: Optimus Prime has the potential for ruthlessness, but only really falls into it when he absolutely has to or is pushed into it, usually out of desperation. After all, he is one of the strongest Autobots, he knows the levels of damage he can dish out if he goes all out, but restrains himself because he does not like to kill and as such only does so out of necessity. The famous Forest Battle of ROTF is one of the best examples of this: Sam is running trying to escape Megatron and later Starscream and Grindor, and Optimus is doing everything he can to stall them, hinder them, anything to keep the ‘Cons away from Sam. But when he falls and gets back up to “take them all on”, he goes all out; slicing off Starscream’s arm and beating him with it, bouncing back and forth between all three to keep them all engaged, cutting Grindor’s arm off before inevitably ripping the ‘Con’s face and head apart.... I like to imagine if he didn’t turn his attention away to see where Sam was, and just told him to run while focusing on where Megatron was, he might not have died the way he did.

I know I can’t change your mind about how you feel, and that’s ok, but honestly, with how the Decepticons were portrayed I feel like Optimus couldn’t see a way to get them to see a peaceful resolution, you know? They’re all so mindless and bent on killing, and in the defense of killing Sentinel, he did kind of kill Ironhide in cold blood. And then I know he was pretty brutal with the Fallen, but he deserved it, didn’t he? He basically forced all the other primes to kill themselves to keep the Fallen from destroying the entire solar system. There wasn’t a whole lot of opportunities for Optimus to really exercise his desire to resolve the conflict peacefully, perhaps he even came to that conclusion at the end of the 07 movie, even in tfp Optimus comes to realize it’s pointless at some point to keep trying to sway Megatron. It’s also probabaly not right to portray Optimus as giving up on his points of view like that, but maybe Bay Prime was far more hardened by war than the other versions of himself

And for them all begging for Optimus to spare them, it makes me feel like Bay was trying to make them seem pathetic, which idk how to feel about that, but yea it really should have ended with dotm, and Megatron saying “who would you be without me” was a great line

i don't see it that way. first, wasn't his first choice - he saw that he was a divisive figure among most returning cybertronians, and felt that his continued presence would get in the way of a post-war coalition. i think there's a selfish angle to that he can be free to do whatever, which is how optimus sees it cuz he's always hard on himself, while the selfless side of it is that he did not desire political power so much to serve as an obstacle towards a lasting peace.

You don't like movie optimus prime personality, and it's OK. you don't have to, that's why there are many versions for people to choose. But I want you to understand why bayformers optimus is that brutal. Optimus started here as someone who is doing things in peacefull way, but imagine, that your closest friend turns on you, beat you lead half of the population of your world against you, torture you and your beloved ones. Enoying the torture of your family and friends and murduring them. Wouldn't that change your personality? This optimus prime is willing to do what's needed to be done to end the war, to end the disaster what decepticons causes. He is someone who put his hands to a mud so that yours can stay clean. You also wouldn't be kind to someone who kill's your parents, friends, your love, torture your kids (hope that noone is), you also would seek revenge, your closest ones are dead and that guy is only in jail still alive, in good condition. Optimus prime here is full emotions full of pain, broken character by the war that rages on for milions of years. Then he came to another world whose people are in danger by transformers war, so he and his autobots are trying to protect, but also they turned against him. You are helping to someone and they want to get rid of you, for your help. Optimus literally said it in movie: HOW MANY AUTOBOTS MUST DIE BECAUSE OF YOU humans. But he still helps to save the humanity after all humans did to autobots. He is just really angry and have enough of this nonsense. That is why optimus is the way he is. But if you don't like this version of optimus prime it's ok, it's up to you and your taste if you like that naive g1 papa stile optimus. Yeah he is much kinder and polite but he had not done enough to stop the decepticons from murdering his friends his family, that's why he failed as someone who is responsible for autobots, because he let megatron many chances to strike again.

I always see Bayverse fans use the excuse; "wouldn't you be going around murdering people if someone went after the people you love?" as a justification for why Optimus in the movies is a murderous maniac. The movies never show us how close the Autobots were to Optimus, he doesn't even react to Ironhide and Elita One's deaths who by the way were his friends back on Cybertron before the great war. Optimus is not a character who would want to seek revenge, because you don't expect a character who has been conceived as a hopeful leader who is all about sacrifice and compassion instead of vengeful bitterness. Optimus in other universe has been through a lot more than what Prime has gone through in the movies, and even through all the tragedy he's been through, he never let the war wear down on his compassion and his code of honor. You can literally assign Optimus' character in the movies to literally any other character because making Optimus a murderous maniac goes against what his character has always been. Optimus in these movies is not some secretly complex character with a lot of people are taking for granted because I doubt the writers tried to make Optimus some complex character because all they do is make him go on murderous rampages. He is not willing to do what it takes to end the war because frankly, killing the guy who just saved your life and is now offering a truce that might end the war in the most peaceful way possible was not needed in the slightest, nor was killing Sentinel who was a downed combatant and also his old mentor back on his homeworld.

Also, I said that the movies never show us Optimus having a close friendship with his Autobots, he has a sort of friendship with Cade but we never get a grasp that Optimus had a personal connection with his Autobots and the tragedies that he went through molded him into the character he was in the movies. The movies never show us Optimus actually having a close friendship with the Autobots which would reason for why Optimus is the way he is. The movies never give us a justification, if you are going to say that he lost everything like his home and his friends then maybe show us him losing everything and this having an effect on his mental capacity. Don't give me that justification if the movies don't have this as the reason for why Optimus is brutal.

I'll be fair with you the bay movies aren't great. But seeing Optimus turn violent from the 2-5 movie makes sense in my opinion. Because through the course of him like you said struggling with leadership and is so critical about war, seeing sentinel prime betray him was his breaking point, it broke Optimus as he knew that peace can't be accomplished by having an alliance with Megatron and now the military. It just shows what war can do to a person, that's why I feel that Optimus's change makes sense to me. But yeah I respect ur opinion

@@tehnandos4637 Optimus was characterized pretty well in Tf1 and was accurate to how he should be portrayed in a live action setting but his characterization and demeanor shifted a lot in Tf2 with no events that took place in between Tf1 and Tf2 for it to make sense. The characters from Tf2 to Tf5 felt kind of consistent in the way he acts but they don't feel consistent with the way Tf1 Prime was. I couldn't picture the Optimus from Tf1 saying things like give me your face while skinning someone alive like how he did in Tf2 or executing defenseles people while they begged for their life. The character just doesn't feel consistent and the way he progressed through films happened all the sudden after Tf1 and not done well with proper timing and events to justify the change. Optimus felt very compassionate, stoic, and felt like the noble hero he should be but he felt to aggressive and brutal and barley like his Tf1 stuff in the sequels with no events between films to justify the random change where he became more aggressive and ruthless.

Optimus Prime is such an iconic and comforting character, I’m glad I got to grow up with the G1 depiction and not the Bayverse one. All of us have that desire to look up to a leader who is courageous and what we strive to be but there to be compassionate too. One of the best Christ-like characters we can look towards. It’s funny I’ve heard him called robot space Jesus but it really can be the case in selflessness he displays but way indirect reflection of Jesus. Anyways follow Christ he’s that true comfort and ultimate servant leader.

I view the G1 cartoon Optimus as full of hope. I see a Matrix Bearing Prime as a spiritual Leader. It has hurt Optimus on a fundamental level to have to kill any Cybertronian, but he also knows that to give in to the Decepticons is to sentence his People to death. I believe he could accept a form of peace with Megatron and the Decepticons, a kind of, your side of the wall and our side of the wall, as long as The People were free to choose, but Megatron can accept nothing less than total Domination over everything. Optimus best and worst trait is his eternal hope. Everyone deserves a chance at redemption, but it is so easily used against him. The Bayverse Optimus, his spark level hurt goes deeper. He has become a Warrior Prime, less a spiritual Leader and more a battle weary, soul wounded Prime that sees little hope of victory. He is a cold killer, no mercy. The way he is going, he is turning to the same path The Fallen walked.
