Road 643 is a really nice drive along the coastline in Westfjords region of Iceland. It stats from highway 61 and runs all the way up to Norðurfjörður and a famous public swimming pool called Krossneslaug.
Djúpavík is a tiny fishing village that's located in the middle of the route. It has an old abandoned herring factory with an art exhibition inside it. Some sources say that only 4 people live in Djúpavík all year round.
The road is 93km (56 miles) long and in this video we drive it through both ways. 643 actually ends at Norðurfjörður, but as I wanted to see how much far up north it was possible to drive, we also took a tiny road further that ended near a farm. It's also possible to turn onto roads 649 and F649 from 643, these roads will be explored in the next video.
Despite being mostly unpaved and occasionally bumpy, 643 is doable with a simple passenger car, if being driven carefully at certain sections. Weather is another thing to think about when taking 643. The road can offer breathtaking views, but thick fog can easily ruin the views and visibility (as can also been seen on some parts of this video).
Iceland is also famous for its mountain roads that have an "F" marking. If you want to check out a list of F-roads or are wondering what car or insurance to choose for F-roads, then Epic Iceland has created some useful links:
