Long story short- I keep a fixed gear bike at a London train station, take a train in, then cycle commute the 17k to the office. Never bothered carrying a quick link because single speed chains don’t snap, right? Wrong. Chain snapped on my way home, apx 6pm, bike shops closed, office now locked, (winter obviously) still with 10k to reach the train station. The local Tesco supermarket were brilliant. Took the bike and stored it for me for two days until I could come back with a new chain. Long series of tube rides for me that night. Amazing how helpful people can be if you ask nicely...

Gives me hope for humanity hearing stories like yours, although I'm sorry for your trouble. I ride bmx bikes a lot. Have since childhood. Never snapped a chain, and all my bikes are from the early mid 80's... until I had to replace one with a new one recently. I feel your pain.

Glenn Howell yeah, it’s easy to lose faith in people when social media is so polarising and mainstream media are little better. In real life, most people, most of the time, are great. The Tesco duty manager that evening was relatively junior and maybe took a bit of a risk- I left some awesome feedback on their customer compliments system and hopefully helped him a little in return.

I rode with a multitool AND tire levers for years, before realizing the multitool had levers integrated. You can use a chain cutter to bodge a snapped chain, just push the pin almost through (but not entirely), when removing the broken link, and turn the cutter around to push the pin back in when reconnecting the chain. You will be one link shorter, but it will get you home. I could never get my brake caliper properly aligned by using any of the methods in the video. I found out that I was tightening the bolts too much, and the final turn pushed the caliper out of alignment. Now I tighten the bolts with less torque, and no problem anymore. Just my few experiences related to the video, hope it can be useful for someone.

the zip tie for spokes is a good idea. I ride rough inner city roads with pot holes everywhere. You could also take a few chain links and a tool but if you stay up with maintenance the chain shouldn't break. If you do some of your own work, these little repairs won't be intimidating. My bikes are all 20 years old but have very few terminal breakdowns.
@grimern694 жыл бұрын
Nice. Love it. Top tip. For a split chain, have a chain link in your saddle pack and a chain tool on your multi tool. Take off the broken link fit the chain link. Finish your ride then get a new chain fitted and replace the link in your saddle pack. May also have a rear mech hanger in saddle pack as some models of bike do go through these. Simple fix with your multi tool and back riding. Enjoy

If it's a relatively short section of newly-cut hedge (which they usually are in England) it's better to dismount and push your bike though the area. With no weight on the bike thorns won't embed themselves in your tyres. It's a lot quicker and stress-free overall than having to stop to fix a puncture. Sadly even though leaving thorns in the road is illegal the police don't care and won't do anything about it.
@darrylhuculak49964 жыл бұрын
I got a slice in my sidewall so that the inner tube was sticking out. A fellow rider gave me a piece of an old tire that he carried with him to insert inside the cut tire to prevent the tube from squeezing out. Worked like a charm! I carry a piece with me all the time now.

In the US if you're a member of AAA that often includes bike service; they may just pick you and your bike up in a flatbed truck, but if you're stuck with something that's not road fixable and there's nobody handy to pick you up or help you other, that's a really handy service.

I always carry loads of tools. At least 6 tire levers (they always snap) Allen keys (good ones, long with a ball shape) Screwdrivers both Philips head and flat head. Puncture repair kits and multiple inner tubes. Set of spanners. Oil. Scissors. Loads of tools, it's those little things you don't think you need that end up being critical. The cheaper your bike the better prepared you should be.
@jonathancarlyon62344 жыл бұрын
I'm a weight weenie so just carry 4mm/5mm allen keys (covers most bolts and lighter than whole tool), plastic spoke key kept as back door key ring so I don't forget it. A spare quick link in case of broken chain. Homemade tyre boots for large sidewall cuts made from double sided 'NoMoreNails' sticky tape and old tyre casing quickly patch big holes (better fix than gel wrapper etc stuffed inside tyre I think).

Loving your leaf work Manon. Leaves come in handy for all kinds of roadside emergencies... the bigger the better!
@barbmorris16964 жыл бұрын
Easiest way to fix a dropped chain is, as soon as it happens, put it back to the gearing you just changed it from. Do it immediately and then once the chain back on, move it down a couple positions on the back, then down to small ring. You can do this also if you’ve had to pullover to the side of the road. In this case, after you do the above, turned the pedals to get it back then you can move front derailleur to small ring position, lift up the rear of the bike and turn the pedals. Your very last choice is touching the chain: if it fell off on the outside, to prevent it from curling over itself, or in the scenerario given, if it just won’t drop onto the teeth, either front or back. My last mechanical was the freewheel hub giving out, same result as Manone, call a friend! Thank goodness for GCN tech shows, I am now well versed in freewheel hub issues. That is a first tho in 35 yrs of riding!

I’ve never gotten off of my bike to put a dropped chain back on and if your limit screws are setup correctly this will work. Drop chain hack: Stay on the bike, pedal slowly, shirt front derailleur to big ring. Val-a chain is back on, hands are clean and only a bit of speed lost.
@stevenx3m4 жыл бұрын
When I bought a carbon road bike, the thing I bought right away before even having one ride was a sort of a tiny chaing guide. Mounts togheter with the front derailleur and adds less than 10g of weight on the bike, but protects the frame from a chain fall. On my MTB returning the chain back in place happens without even stopping. It is 2x10 so carefully using the front derailleur puts it back in place. Riding fast on rough terrain sometimes leads to falling chain. Not as nice as on the road.
@stevenx3m4 жыл бұрын
Recently I got a broken glass slash my rear tire on my road bike. I stopped, took the tube out, put a patch, put it back on the rim and hoped I can get enough pressure. Unfortunately, the hole on the tire was too big and the tube started coming out as bubble. There was nothing I can think of other than calling a friend to pick me. Can't walk 10km with those shoes. The plastic cleats will be destryed in no time. 40EUR for a new tire wasn't nice.

Had a spoke snap on my ride this weekend! I didn't have any tape, but my multi-tool did have a spoke wrench, so I just screwed the spoke out of the nipple and kept moving.
@wazzup1054 жыл бұрын
Not really a mechanical, but the other day I re-indexed my gears while riding. My (MTB-)shifters have the knob for tightening them at the handlebars (instead of at the derailleur), so I didn't have to get off my bike to do some adjustments to get that one gear to shift properly again Still a good skill to have. Anyways, I sometimes stuff gets lose, so I tighten it. That's the most of it. And the other day I hit a rather deep hole and did a face-plant and broke my aero bar pad. I put it back on backwards and whilst a bit awkward I did manage to continue cycling.

This is very useful, thank you! I was out on a ride recently. The front-wheel reflector snapped, and I saw it turn sideways adding more resistance. Do you recommend taking it off completely? What do you recommend for safety/visibility in general? Can you also please cover road-side flat tire repair? Lastly, can you talk about biking jackets? Do we need them? How/where to store them for long rides that need a lot of stuff packed and where the weather can change quite a bit throughout the day.

I removed the typical wheel reflectors and replaced them for some of these spoke reflectors (There are many brands, the best ones have this 3M reflector, but this is just an example www.amazon.co.uk/Salzmann-Scotchlite-Reflector-Bicycle-standard/dp/B00DNG8DSY/). You don't have to go crazy, I have just 4 on my wheels, that or a a couple more should be enough. You almost don't notice them and they stay super stable on the spokes (I have them on my Mountain Bike as well, so they can take rough surfaces :)). You might not notice this, but you tend to wipe your dirty hands on your clothing, so personally for me the glove is quite helpful. Another tip, do not dispose them after your first stop, you still got to ride home and who knows you’ll need another stop. Any roadside stop is also an opportunity to clean your break pads. Dispose them properly once you got home

The most common mechanical is a puncture and the most annoying variation of that is a rip/cut in the side wall that means the new tube is going to blow out in the cut. Solution to get home: A leaf, a gel wrapper, a paper bill of the local currency can cover the gap but for me, I just pull out my pocket knife and cut a section out of the ruined tube and use it to cover the gap. And if you break a spoke with rim brakes, it may be necessary to open the brake release lever to get enough clearance to allow you to ride home without the wobbly part of the rim rubbing on the pads.

Or just make sure your FD is properly set up with the H and L screws. No chain catcher required and no scuffs on your cranks 👍🏻

One time I was riding my Fixed gear (single-speed) and I couldve sworn my brakes were rubbing. Little did I know I was just going uphill at a slight ascent XD

I'v been biking for many years now and have only had three mechanical issues on my bikes. The popped tire is the most irritating thing. Its irritating that no bike tire can run over a black berry thorn without popping. I enjoy bikes of all price ranges. Cheap wallmart bikes give me a thrill that no other kind of bike can; being that, there dangerous. I've taken off on a smooth road and had the rim fold around the frame flinging me off many distance. And the last one is the chain braking. I used to be in much better shape; like, I could sustain 100rpms like nothing. I took of on my Gt what ever it was and the chain snapped so hard and when so far, I could never find it. I haven't had any real issue of such in years now. Problems don't happen if your methodical in how the bike is treated wilst the bike is being used or not. Storage is where most people inflict the most damage to their bikes...

Rick - who has that kind of cash in this digital age? (Also, where am I gonna get a dollar bill in Europe? 😉)

@@ivarbrouwer197 Fair points but given the weakness of the Euro I am not sure it would hold up much past 30 psi.

This bike was really easy to assemble kzbin.infoUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA and required very few adjustments out of the box. The wheels did not require any truing/adjustments. The frame had some small scratches, but nothing major.I did replace the seat though - the seat it came with was very uncomfortable. The tires need to be re-inflated every 4-5 days, but this appears to be quite common for the narrow 700x25 tires.Overall, in my opinion, this bike looks and rides like a much more expensive bike.

On my disc brake bike i tried it 5 times and it didn't work is it because the pads are to close together? also is there any way to temporarily repair a snapped cable on a ride and how to you avoid it thanks
@Calum_S4 жыл бұрын
The old MTB trick for a broken rear gear cable was take the front gear cable and put it into the rear shifter and then tie it to whatever remains of the rear cable. I've never tried it though. I've heard that cables usually break at the shifter because that is where they rub the most, so it's a matter of having to do quite a deep inspection every so often.

I can fix a dropped chain pedaling forward with the derailleur in the big ring.
