Very often you could be forgiven for only naming the styling house, whether it be Bertone , or Pinnifarina , Zagato or otherwise, but it is Matteos extra detail that brings to light the actual individual designer who worked for one of these styling houses. A very interesting but sad story , not only for his life being cut short , but also to think how his talent could have been displayed on future designs . Thanks for this one , merry Xmas and happy new year
@Matteo_Licata2 жыл бұрын
Thank you!!!! The likes of Bertone and Pininfarina weren't interested in revealing those who worked for them, so the names of these "unsung heroes" started getting recognition only after their careers ended. However, such secretiveness muddied the waters quite a bit, and it's not always easy to attribute each car correctly. For example, most writers still believe the Aurelia B20 to be a Pininfarina design... Although it wasn't ;) Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you!

As italian, I like to suggest that what F. Scaglione designed was obviously by his genius, but also the "genius" of italian style tradition. Italian art is not just Giotto, Raffaello: every little church has a minor Giotto, fruit of a "school" that makes great the whole country. Another example: italian chefs are just a peak of a culture that provide, in each house, a great chef (mother, uncle etc) Obviously, imho

I've been a big fan of Italian designed cars since I was very young. I always wanted to go to Italy to design cars. Marcello Ghandini, and Gorgetto Gurgaro were my heros growing up. Mr. Franco Scaglione deserves much more attention than he gets. Thank you.

Thank you! Growing up in Turin in the 1980s, my hero was (and still is!) Giorgetto Giugiaro, and that’s when I decided I’d be a car designer… Which I ended up doing, by the way! I was lucky to contemplate the 33 stradale on the flesh, almost literally. It's amazing to see it, there is not any rupture in her design, nothing to change, can't be better. Another cracking post Matteo - thank you. The Stradale 33 (along side the Maserati A6GCS) are my favourite looking cars of all time. Designed at a time where practicality was way down the list and style was the number 1. Good to see Scaglione getting some credit - he was a shining light amongst many other talented designers who sculpted Italy's place in the world of beautiful automobiles.
@Matteo_Licata2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your appreciation! Yes, those were the days when designers could pretty much do as they pleased, and Scaglione used that freedom to the fullest, creating timeless works of art that keep inspiring people today. Speaking of regulatory issues: only the first two Stradale made had four headlights, and the front was slightly redesigned with just two headlights afterward. Why? On the four-lights examples, the lower elements sat too low for homologation :)

Franco Scaglione deserves this tribute, and also deserves the appreciation and recognition of many foreign admirers who (as we can read in the comments) have in mind who this designer was and what masterpieces he designed. His typical signature was a "tilted downwards" front bonnet, which he drew in almost all his creations. That yellow Alfa 33, among others, is actually a sculpture, worthy of artists such as Michelangelo.
@Matteo_Licata2 жыл бұрын
La 33 gialla non é di Scaglione, però! Quella é di Pininfarina, disegnata da Fioravanti su uno dei 5 telai 33 non utilizzati per le vetture di produzione.

Franco Scaglione was a designer artist in its purest form. He was in pursue of stilistic perfection and couldn't care less about any practical use or applications of the objects he designed. The BAT cars are a perfect testimony to this. What I heard is that this is the main reason why he left the position of Bertone's chief designer (to be replaced by a 21-year old kid named Giorgetto Giugiaro). Scaglione wanted absolute artistic freedom, while Nuccio Bertone needed to create car designs he could actually sell to car manufacturers. Funny you brush over this aspect in your further great video!
@Matteo_Licata2 жыл бұрын
Well, I didn't go into the details of Scaglione's departure from Bertone because the circumstances aren't all that clear. Most accounts, however, coincide on it being not an amicable separation... Which is believable, given we're talking strong-minded Italians here :)

Thank you and welcome onboard David! I'm very happy that you enjoy my content and I hope my upcoming material will keep satisfying you. The 33 Stradale is, weirdly enough, more popular now than it's ever been, due to Alfa Romeo using it extensively in its promotional material. As I explained in the video, it barely sold in period, and was rather quickly forgotten by everyone except the most ardent Alfa fanboys.

Another great video Matteo. It's sad when people are not recognised for their achievements when working for major companies all because of the brands associated with the major design companies. Designers should be awarded by having their names being recognised by the industry first, then the company they represent. This happens a lot in my industry (food production and packaging) where a company employs an artisan to make a product for them, only to reap the rewards when entered into an annual award with no recognition for the "actual" producer. Sad.... 😞😞

Well, I'd say it's the way of the world: after all, Bertone and Pininfarina "sold" their name, and had no interest in publicizing their designers. Nowadays some car designers do get visibility, but that's no better, as these people often take credits they don't deserve: cars now are designed by large teams, and it's often unfair to credit just one individual within the team.

Molto interessante. La 33 stradale è sintesi suprema di linee essenziali in un equilibrio perfetto. Scaglione doveva avere una innata predisposizione all’equilibrio estetico e le proporzioni. La mano libera su tecnigrafo e curvilinee hanno fatto il resto.

Thank you for sharing. What a brilliant designer, that I never knew. The video editing showing us these beautiful cars and your script are excellent. Italian car designs are the best in the world. IMHO 👍 8:13

What a strange coincidence that Franco Scaglione and Feruccio Lamborghini born and died the same year!

Sorry for reacting bit late but it's great you have started this series about lesser known stylists. Although I know Scaglione by name he indeed is a bit of a lesser known name for me. Until now that is! :-)
