Cannot take it back, but as you said I will really emphasize international students do get to know, build good relation with lots of fellow Finnish students. Once left the university its really hard to build network.

It seems that in many countries, student activities and volunteering isnt really a priority and its often not even encouraged. Oh totally, i think you are in the right direction with this. Just be open-minded and try to put yourself into situations where you will be able to get to know new people. I know it can be hard especially if you are an introvert but this is why i think student activities are one of the best ways to get to know people. Getting to know people through activities might feel much less awkward than just trying to sit down at a cafe trying to figure out what to say 😅. When you are doing some kind of an activity, you have more flexibility.

Yep knowing people is really important in the job market here. I once got a job when I was shopping for groceries. I said hi to a guy I had worked with previously, and he offered me a job at the place he was then working at. Also my current job is thanks to having a friend at a company in my field. One of the courses at our University of Applied Sciences was to do a project for a company, so I kind of jokingly asked my friend if they happened to have anything for me and my two class mates. Well, they did have a project for us and ever since finishing that project, we all three have been working for that company. And now that I'm working there, they seem to have quite a few job positions that are only advertised internally. So you can apply yourself or if you happen to know someone who would be a good candidate you can tell them about the open position.

Yeah, small countries really rely on personal networks for jobs (and black-market apartments), more than formal qualifications or the formal application process. Small-country old boys' and girls' networks can really be vicious. Got me my job in Sweden (some-one I had met briefly in graduate school who worked there recommended me!) but kept me from advancing far (for some reason, I was never called on for the important voluntary things, like being "opponent" on a dissertation). One's name just never comes up!

But Oliver, some student housing associations don't open applications until a couple of months prior to the beginning of the semester. I don't know if that is because of covid or not, though. In those cases, should we apply for the spring semester and start paying until autumm, when we in fact arrive, or can we wait until it opens without the risk of being losing oportunities?

Oh nono, just apply as soon as they allow you to. This is why i mentioned that you should apply as soon as you can depending on the rules of each provider. So no, dont apply for an apartment for the spring. Just mark your calendar so that you can apply for the auyumn as soon as the application opens 👍

Some of these are Dos and Don't for all international students in all countries tho like not relying on part time jobs and not restricting themselves to other international students. I know one friend of mine tho who is actually in Sweden and she attends an international univesity (as in all students are international there) and she was bullied and harrassed early on in her studies by some of the male international students there that caused her to become reserved and just not wanting to get out there and make friends and instead she drowned most of her time there in books just trying not to even be around people and just sticking to her books and the library, so, that 'not wanting to get out of books and not wanting to mix with people' might actually legit be a sign of depression and trauma or homesickness and maybe it's not 100% controllable by the person themselves in unfortunate cases like hers and not a sign that the international student isn't looking forward to make friends with the people of the country they're in.

Thanks so much for the great question! This depends on the university that you are studying at. Most schools actually have a webpage about the local student life from where you can find more information. For example, Aalto university has a webpage about student life and if you go all the way down and click the drop-down menu titled _More information about student unions_ you will get links to the websites of the most important student organisations. You can then get more information from those websites. Here is the link to the Aalto university webpage: www.aalto.fi/en/study-at-aalto/student-life While searching information on the web is one option, the issue is that there are so many different organisations that its pretty much impossible to find info on everything on the web. So the best way to find information on the different clubs, guilds and other student organisations is by asking your student tutor once you have arrived to Finland and started your studies. During my exchange semester in Helsinki it was that if you are lucky, you will receive one offer from HOAS. Should you decline that, you won’t get any other offer. Or at least it was like that when I was in Helsinki 😊

Hey and thanks for the great question! Vanessa is totally correct here. Hoas and other student apartment providers usually give you one offer (one option) and if you decline it, you will be put in the back of the queue meaning that you will most likely not get a new offer at least within the same semester.

@@leelee1320 Hard to say. They do this over time so it doesnt happen all at the same time. If you applied in March, i would not be worried. If Hoas offers you an apartment, this should happen a good time before the start of the academic year.

Hey Divij! The academic year at universities starts in the first or the second week of september depending a bit on your courses. Universities of applied sciences start their academic year a bit earlier so in the last weeks of august.

You're most welcome. Im glad to hear that this was useful. To your question: the Kamk university of applied sciences is a great school and if you have found a programme that interests you, i can highly recommend it. To be clear, there are also quote-on-quote "better" school for studying a master's degree in business but Kamk is also a great school. One detail that i should clarify though. Kamk is actually not a university but rather its a university of applied sciences. This might be a bit confusing because the Finnish education system is pretty much different from most of the world. However, universities of applied sciences (UAS) are sometimes referred to as a polytechnic universitis. There are a few differences between universities and universities of applied sciences that you should know about. I have a video in which i explain all the differences in detail. Is there a Swedish-language university in Finland? I assume that music and literature are not taught at Aalto University. So, where are they taught in Finland? For your second question: depends on what you mean by this! Music studies are taught at Sibelius Academy, Åbo Akademi/University, and in the universities of Helsinki, Turku, Jyväskylä and Oulu. In some of these it is a degree of a music teacher (a Master's degree), while some teach composing and producing music, or music sciences, to give you some examples. I think Aalto University is one of the only, if not the only university in Finland that does not offer literature studies. Anyone who has more information can correct me, though!

Hey and thanks for the great comment. So the reason why i mentioned the part-time jobs in this case is explained in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fl6mnKptlKaMaNk . In short, its very hard to get a part time job as a student (especially if you are in early stages of your studies) that pays enough to pay for your living costs - and especially your tuition fees. Having said this, there are definitely some good part time opportunities that you could pursue. Some of the ones that you mentioned are great. The only one that i would not recommend right away is Uber. This is because in Finland, Ubers are considered the same as Taxis meaning that you need to get a Taxi license. This not only requires that you have a drivings license that has been issued is a EU/EEA country but it also requires you to apply for a Taxi license which takes around 4-6 weeks to get and has a 400€ base cost. More information about driving an Uber in Finland: www.uber.com/fi/en/drive/requirements/?city=helsinki That was just one example, but i would actually highly recommend looking at food delivery jobs. These can actually make you a nice amount of money if you get to know the city well. The best food delivery company in Finland is Wolt. As someone workin part-time in recruitment for newspaperdiliverers (I will not disclose what company on this account), I would say it definitely can be an option. But be prepared to ride a bike in -20°C.

Hey Margaret. In short, i would recommend you to apply to an engineering course that you are actually interested in. I would disregard recommendations by third parties and just go with your gut. You can build a wonderful career regardless of your specialisation and a good rule of thumb is that the more your personally enjoy the topic, the better you will do in school and during your career. Personally, i was not able to find a bachelors degree in civil engineering taught in Finland in English (i also did not spend more than 5 minutes on this so you might have better luck). This might simply mean that there are no bachelors level degrees available in this specific field BUT it does not mean that you could not pursue the field in Finland. You could e.g. do a more general engineering degree in your bachelors, after which you can apply for a master's degree in civil engineering. Just my idea. I hope this helps 👍

A foreign student must show proof that they have enough money in their bank account to cover living expences for the each year of study. One needed to do this at the start of each year. This was how it was when I studied in Helsinki 20 years ago anyway. When I studies, I heard about groups of foreign students who would move a sum of money from one person's bank account to anothers so that everyone in that group could get the proof of funds that was required to continue their studies.

I think the more relevant question here is why would you want to do a master's in the US while you could do a great master's degree in Finland (especially if you are already considering doing a bachelor's here).

My son is a US citizen living in India. He will be doing masters in USA and moving there for good. Was checking the option of doing bachelor's in Finland instead of India as he wants to live and experience Europe before going to US. Bachelor's in India and USA are for 4 yrs while Europe its 3 yrs. Oh this is actually quite interesting. Thank you very much for sharing such a personal story. If your son is indeed planning on studying in the US in order to stay there for good, i would definitely recommend that he should do his bachelor's there as well. There are many different opinions on this topic and while some people will argue that getting experience from around the world is good (count me into this group), i would still recommend that your son should stick to one country. This is simply due to the way that friendships and networks are built. If he comes to Finland for 3 years, he will start building personal relationships as well as professional networks in Finland. However, those are going to be almost completely useless in terms of his career development if he then leaves to work in the US. At least in Finland, professional networks are one of the most valuable tools in one's job hunting toolbox and this would feel like waste for me. So if we think about your sons career development (and to be honest, personal life), doing his studies primarily in one country could be the better option. Having said this, i highly recommend getting experience from other countries as well and one great option for him to do this would be to include an international exchange semester as a part of his studies in the US. This means that he would do a full semester in e.g. Europe. This way he could get the cultural and personal experiences without it imposing too much permanent change into his life. Hope this makes some sense 😏

If you want to do a three year degree and want to work as an accountant then you need to apply for a university of applied science. Universities do not educate accountants.

All university admissions in Finland are done on a competitive basis. This means that you will always have to compete for a spot against other applicants. There are no schools that specifically accept "low grade students". Instead, some universities are more popular than others meaning that it will be easier to get in to some than to others. Unfortunately i cant help you find a suitable school because i would need to have a ton of information about you, your interests as well as different degree programmes. So what i would recommend you to do is to start looking for interesting programmes from this website: opintopolku.fi/konfo/en/sivu/higher-education-degrees#masters-degrees . Once you find an interesting programme, you can read more about it and the application criteria from the university website. I hope this helps.

@@shakirnawaz1072 ​ I dont know all the details about driving licenses but my understanding is that you should be able to use your current license in Finland. There are some exceptions e.g. when it comes to driving manual vs automatic and when it comes to driving in Finland as a profession. You need you to check out these details from this website: ​ajokortti-info.fi/en/getting-driving-licence About jobs and the limited work hours, you are correct in that non-EU/EEA citizens can only work for 25 hours per week (on average) during the school semesters. Do note that holidays are different. I explain this in detail in this video and i recommend you to check it out: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnaUqXh-ltOLiJY I have no idea how much you could make by working as a driver (taxi, uber or something similar) for 25 hours per week. However, what i can say is that driving as a profession in Finland is something you cant just start doing. I try to avoid giving blanket statements about potential earnings and income because the amount of money you make is always dependent on your personal abilities and skillsets. Two people doing a similar job can still make different amounts of money a) if the other person works harder and longer hours or b) is able to negotiate a better salary because of their experience, education etc.. If you want to know about potential salaries from e.g. driving an Uber, id suggest contacting Uber Finland about this. Its hard for me to say anything more here simply because i dont have the numbers.

Mistake 1. Coming to Finland. 2. Thinking Helsinki is a representative of Finland in any way. 3. If you make the mistake of coming to Finland, worse yet mistake is NOT learning Finnish swearwords and their use. They´ll save you from most trouble. Cursing believeably in Finnish will make you accepted almost everywhere. A place it won´t make you accepted, is a place not worth going to.

Biggest mistake is to go anywhere where they don’t like you and yours. Their lifestyles demand you not be yourself or live by your ways. Instead of Finland,just throw yourself in a ditch and let foreigners piss on you. But they welcome your money,if you stay in line.
