That fort near the Alibaug beach is called the Colaba fort. Further down south from Alibaug you also have the famous Murud Janjira fort. When you guys were there it was low tide and during low tide one can walk from the beach to the Colaba fort. At Murud Janjira there are sail boats that take you to the fort.

I drove from Pune to Banglore on 27 October and yes i 100% agree with pallavi that roads of Maharashtra are not that good infact bad. And for a heads up till Belagavi you will diversion every 2-3 km.... And once you enter Karnataka roads will improve except one strech where you need to drive as road construction is going on and traffic is moving from one lane.
