Derek Bieri of Vice Grip Garage was kind enough to invite me onto his new Motor Trend TV show called Roadworthy Rescues to help with a 1928 Ford Model A that had been sitting for 60 years. We had just 5 days to get it running, driving, and looking respectable so that we could check out some historic Detroit landmarks like the Ford Highland Park plant (where most of the 15 million Model T's were made) and the Woodward Dream Cruise on famous Woodward Avenue. The Model A was in worse shape than we thought, can we do it? Here is what it was like behind the scenes filming that epic episode of Roadworthy Rescues, Season 1, episode 7, "Motown Model A". Roadworthy Rescues airs Tuesday nights at 10, or available any time on MotorTrend On Demand- www.motortrend...
Thank you to Derek Bieri and Motor Trend for this amazing opportunity! Thank you to Michelle Turczyn, Christine Dang, Sandon Voelker, Matthew Thompson, Sean Winograd, Brad Bass, and David Silberman. Also thank you to Dennis at MC3. Sorry Derek and I ruined your Harbor Freight shop vac!
For those wondering, there was nothing made up or faked, this is really what happened. Derek Bieri is exactly the same off camera as he is on camera. Absolutely no ego or attitude, just a super nice, down to earth fella who is ultra supportive of his friends and family. And, Derek really knows his stuff!! Don't be fooled by the humbleness, he is a top notch mechanic!

Well guys....my heart melted when I saw the model A getting fixed :) I have a 1931 model A truck....me and my dad restored it in 2001...I was 31 years old first driving it....then...A huge rain storm came and flooded our home..the model A was parked in front of the house...water came so fast that it covered the model A for about 3 hours....my heart broke in that moment....after the water went down me and dad:( pushed the truck to the garage and drained the engine...he put kerosene in the engine and sadly it's been sitting since 2001. If Road worthy rescue could come to Anawalt, WV and help me get it running again... my broken heart my begin to heal...I lost my Dad in 2018 and my soul needs this Model A truck to live again...if the show is interested in coming I would be forever grateful... much love for your show....please respond... your friend, John Victor Davis :)

Thanks to Derek, I was clued into your channel, and I am one fortunate youtube surfer. The amount of knowledge you've gathered over the years of working on these cars is incredible. Next spring, I start working on a 1940 Ford 1/2 ton truck my dad took apart in 1980. He had recently passed, and the truck is still in parts in his garage. It does have the original flathead in it, though.

@@ModelA It's obvious he hears and sees things and analyzes the entire vehicle and knows what to do. I'd love to see a finished vehicle but that isn't what he is doing. Recently I became interested in vehicle restoration and restoring a dead vehicle and at one end is Derek with your great help and then Garage Squad and at the other end is Joe Martin of Martin Brothers who is so talented and FantomWorks with amazing but expensive restorations that take years. What Derek does is awesome getting junk to run and drive miles and miles!

@@ModelA I'm 60 and retired and wish I was 20 again to start a career working on vehicles. My legs and back wouldn't allow me to do it today even if I went to school and trained to learn. All of you are so talented and impressive!

I LOVE both of your channels... and I'm a HUGE Model A fan! I had a 1929 Tudor when I was in high school that I never finished restoring because I enlisted in the US Navy in 1981 (dad sold the car a year after I left). I'd love to get a 28 or 29 Model A Phaeton some day. I've lived most of my life in Metro Detroit too!!!

Wow, I scrolled through quite a few comments and the fact that no one commented on the kid ....I mean kidney stone you passed tells me they have never passed one, kudos to your pain tolerance, that looked awful. I passed two in one night at home, but your one trumped my two! By the way, great episode. You and Derek worked great together. (I know this is a year late but it just popped on my YT feed).

Having kidney stones 2 times, I feel your pain, the second time was a year ago, they had to go in and take it out. Great video by the way.

I saw that this Model A went home to Tennessee with Derek and shares lift storage space with the red A that he had before. That's pretty cool. They're both good looking Model As and they got a great home.

These were when cars were built to stand up to anything Henry Ford knew what he was doing and built a quality car for whatever price range you had whether it was a base model model t or an all-out extravagant dolled up 1930 Ford model a Tudor these are some beautiful cars that built America

You're absolutely correct about that. The t & the a are also the machines that gave regular average people more freedom than they had ever had.
