The Okavango Delta is a global Overlanding destination, it's an area of the world packed with unbelievable amounts of biodiversity and is a dream for many to come and explore. The typical way to explore is through a self drive safari, so we packed our rigs and head for the border where we would be spending 3 weeks exploring eveywhere between Moremi Game Reserve, Khwai Magotho, and Savuti in the Chobe National Park. This was sure to be an amazing expedition! We begin our journey in Nata at the Nata Lodge, before heading to Maun for a couple days at Audi Camp to gather ourselves and resupply before heading into the Okavango Delta it's self with a helicopter flight over the Delta, we then head to camp in Moremi, at the famous Third Bridge where we would camp a couple evenings in rooftoptents, listening to the wild sounds of the animals; Lions, Elephants, Hippo's, Hyena's and more. The following morning we head out to game drive the Mboma loop, and take a boat on the channels of the Okavango delta its self. This is where we would get charged by a Hippo in our boat, which certain shook things up for us a bit! The next day we head to Xakanaka to on our way out of the park, en route to Khwai Magotho.

I last made the overland trip from Kasani, Kazangula,, Savuti Channel, Moremi, Maun and Moremi in 1971 in 4 Series II Land Rovers. Needless to our equipment was primitive compared to yours,, no Navigation, radios etc. There were no lodges, boat ramps or even formal campsites in Moremi or Savuti. We made the trip in early April and had to register our route and ETA with the police who told us we were only the fourth vehicle to attempt the trip in either direction that year as the roads were still flooded in places. We actually met vehicles #2 and #3, who told us about a route around the flood waters, but this involved bushwhacking - thank goodness we had good winches, So your video brought back many memories and showed how different Botswana is today

Lion at the ablutions in 3rd bridge, lion and wild dogs on mbomaloop and lions close to 4th bridge, live leopard kill between 4th bridge and Xakanaxa, packing up camp in the dark with a Lion roaring close by at south gate and so much more. Your epic video brings back beautifull memories of this incredible place, only a few months ago. Looking forward to next year going back. Will share. For now looking forward to your next video in Khwai mogotho area, thanks for taking us with you.

Awesome Adrian. Showing us all how it should be done! That helicopter flight bought back memories but wow you guys saw tons more than we did. Well done on knowing how to jack up your vehicle and change a tyre. I was on a trip to Kgalagadi near Ventersdorp, where a guy didn’t have a clue how to jack up his vehicle and didn’t have a useable spare due to the wrong rim - spare was basically for show. I ended up using 6 plugs to fix it. Love the new canopy! That’s now done properly! Well done bushtech. Amazing how different things look there a month or so after we were there! That guide was so wrong to go towards those hippo and put you at risk. Everyone knows those hippo in that lagoon as being very aggressive. He should have steered well clear of them. (Sorry don’t mean to be negative) Thanks for sharing.

Great storytelling. This is the traditional African expedition overlanding that many people envision. Something about having the threat of hyenas, big cats, hippos, etc wonder through one's camp site. I think I would need one of those plexiglass boxes photographers use to film Kodiak bears, just to feel safe enough to sleep 😴 💤 🤔 Looks like a great series in the works. 🎥 That hippo attack was crazy.

We camped at Khumaga in the migration season a while ago, treated to the sounds of Lion kills in the night but we’re woken up to what sounded like very odd thunder close to us, in the dim moonlight two massive elephants had come to check out our camp, the next morning we saw they were a mere 6m from our tent…. the ‘thunder’ we heard, the grumbling of Elephant tummy’s 😂

This video brought so many memorines, In June 2022 with a friend of mine, we did a road trip in Botswana as well, from Kasane,Kazungula, back to Manun to Moremi, and so many other places, that time we had a two by 4 car, so we could not go into several places on our own so we had to do a lot of game drive with other people once we got into some places, the best moment of the trip was the two days we spent camping in Makhadikhadi Pans, Botswana is indeed a hidden gem.

I'm surprised your battery was at 50% when you got to camp. Didn't you drive a long distance to get there? And it sounds like you need to really invest on a fixed solar panel on your rig. And OMG about the hippo strike. Talk about your boat breaking down at the wrong place, at the wrong time. Being attacked by Africa's most aggressive and territorial animal and get away unhurt is an experience to remember for a very long time. Excellent intro and fantastic storytelling through great editing. Your commentary also adds to a great episode. 👍👌
@RoamOverlanding
@RoamOverlanding Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! We actually didn’t have too many long drives and were relying heavily on the solar panels! We managed to get to 80% by the end of the day every day 👌🏻 the issue with the solar is that it was always dusty, cloudy and hazy so the panels couldn’t do their most. Two fridges running permanently uses 10A so that’s my 120ah lithium battery done in 12H so we had to be super on top of our charging

Was that a deliberate hippo attack or it was a hippo being in an unfortunate location?
@RoamOverlanding
@RoamOverlanding Жыл бұрын
It was definitely deliberate, he had warned us a couple times. But the guide wasn’t tuned into the vibe of the hippo so much. But if you watch where the boat stops, and then when we start to go again, the boat had drifted a lot and I think while the guide was busy on the engine he didn’t notice and as we went off we literally went over the hippo, instead of along side. It was a comedy of errors there

Awesome video. When people talk to me about weight saving, and I look in the mirror, I realise they probably weigh under 100kg's. If not, yhe weight of a tyre is not an excuse not to be over prepared.

Really interesting video, I did the Okavango (all private concessions bordering Moremi) by light aircraft in 2010 spending 10 days traveling from Oddballs to various other lodges and on to Mowana river lodge Kasane before crossing into Zambia at Kazangula, absolutely brilliant, we didn't do it by 4×4 but my parents did in the mid 90's What interests me is the system's that you have in your vehicles, solar power, charge controllers, long range diesel tanks, water storage, refrigeration equipment etc, I own a blue water sailing yacht which has significantly more water, diesel, battery capacity than your vehicles but of identical nature and it's amazing just how similar the vast majority of systems are, fascinating correlation between the two

There are designated "stretch points" in Botswana Parks and game reserves, you don't just stop anywhere to have a bite like you guys did at Mboma loop.

I’ll check on the gps again, but I’m pretty sure it was marked as a picnic spot; because we usually use that as a general rule of thumb ourselves. The spot was pretty decently cleared out so was definitely a well used spot

I like your nature footage and would like to sea more of it while talking and explaning. To be honest we start loosing interest if you filming to much of your self. This counts for many people making You Tube videos and to fast forwarding a part of the video is also not a good idea, rather show that part normal and for a short while. Thank you for your effort, time and information.
