Glad that your perspective on bulbul is improved. All girls I know have been deeply impacted by the movie. It's emotionally horrifying. We tend to judge horror movies by scariness or ugliness, but bulbul horrifies you for days with its Curt commentary about a life of woman in our society. More horrifying is the fact that so many women undergo even worse than what bulbul went through in their marriages.

The one thing I'm glad about and it's the fact that a part of the audience has started admiring flawed characters and seeing things from their perspective and calling out heroes and protagonists of their toxic behaviors. People have started to criticise Raj from DDLJ, Bunny from YJHD and many more heroes. While I've no problem with the characters, but these characters are often glorified and put on a pedestal that people worship them and when they're criticized, people lose their minds. I'm a big fan of Malayali actor Dileep. But looking back, it's obvious that some of his films both hits and flops had a lot of women derogatory elements and cheap humor under the guise of innocent humor. It's refreshing to see that audiences are starting to see things in a bit more critical sense and demand for better content.

The problem with Kabir Singh is that the whole plot seems insignificant at the end. If they had married at the beginning, at the time of the end of the film Kabir and Preeti would be 'happily' married with a baby. What changed for Kabir with his behaviour is, 1. He lost few months with Preeti 2. He did drugs and alcohol, has a few relationships and got a dog 3.Got his medical license suspended (this is the only one that is actually impactful longterm, but it doesn't have anything to do with their relationship) Relationshipwise almost nothing changed, either way at that point in time they would be 'happily' married with a baby. It would have been a okay ending, 2.They don't end up together. Preeti and her husband or Preeti alone raising the baby (or no baby at all 🤷🏾♀️). Kabir being alone and sad sad forever, or finding someone better suited and doing a better job at a relationship. 3. Either of them dying (cliche and dramatic I know, but better than this) 4.Or at the very least the child not being Kabirs. Also I find it a little cliche that Kabir slept around but Preeti remained 'chaste' for him. Like I am not telling that she should have slept together with anyone, even with her husband. And considering Preetis character it makes sense (She loved Kabir she slept with him. She didn't love anyone else, including her husband, so she didn't sleep with anyone else. That's all good and well). But the continued trope that its cool and normal for men to sleep around, but its only 'romantic' or 'true love' if the woman saves herself for only the hero, is overused and wayyyy too normalised. It's in character with Preeti, but why do they always make female leads who are in character with it?

Damn right about Kabir Singh.. We can argue whether things done by a character in a movie are justifiable or not in real life. But we can't tell the creators not to make that movie. We can say Kabir was a problematic character but we can't tell Sandeep Reddy to not make the movie.

Of course, movies with diff characters who have diff personalities are necessary and there shouldn't be any kind of censorship regarding that. However, the way you portray these characters is important. The director is presenting it as if it is the epitome of love and passion. (He even said that in an interview)And this is sending a message to the audience that this kind of behavior is acceptable and cool, and one should aspire to be like Kabir/Arjun. You can clearly see comments primarily by men who defend this movie(including the slap) in review videos. The Malayalam movie Uyare also showed a toxic relationship portrayed by Asif Ali, the only difference is his obsession and possessiveness is not shown as true love but instead scary and terrible. And for me, that makes all the difference

I loved the film's ending when Sejal gives an underlying metaphor in context of the ring when she shows it to Harry and says "we ultimately find what we're seeking". Then Harry reflects on his life and says "even I am trying to look for something... every second... every moment", then Anushka suddenly turns back and the song Ghar starts playing in the background. Then harry drives back not letting his emotions come in the way of his judgement, getting by his day. He then get by his day continuing his routine 9-5. IMO encouraging such abuse and their victims only causes more and more such cases to come. Victims being passive is a well known phenomenon which is studied. There are many victims who are burned, raped, beaten everyday but still swear its love and say they want to live with the abuser. Should we be fine with that too? I agree with your review of Kabir Singh. I still loved the movie, performances, music, the way of its storytelling and some part of character development. Though I also recognize there were some jarring problems with it that I really wished the director would have looked into. They could have atleast shown that the two main leads realizing that their relationship was toxic or something.. Or working towards that aspect. Showing in a way that it wasn't ok.

Thank you Jammy. I recently watched Bulbul with my family, and even though I am a huge horror aficionado, I just couldn't watch the assault scene. The point of the movie isn't the horror of the paranormal, but of the normal. I'm so glad you're using your platform very conciously.

My two cents on Kabir Singh: The movie is very in line with the idea behind Goodfellas, ...A gangster who lives his life in excess and comfortably gets away by the end and lives an above average life as informant and Writer. The basic question Scorsese is asking us viewers is would you still choose such a lifestyle? Given the fact that the US federal system allows criminals to live as normal citizens Kabir Singh similarly is a story of a man who lives his life in excesses, shits on ppl around him but in the end somehow gets the love of his life....So the movie is posing a question to test viewer's own morality. Whether you would get inspired by such a character just because things worked out by the end

Definitely rockstar. I thought it was a classic when I first saw it but I recently revisited it and I realised how shoddily edited it was. Either ranbir taking drugs in one shot or him playing guitar in the other. The songs and ranbir are the only good parts of that movie. A movie I didn't like then but I love now is definitely Swades. It moved me to a great extent and again ar Rahman sirs magic ♥️

I love how you cleared up the issue of Kabir Sing and Preeti. The expectation that all women should be outspoken and without inhibitions ,negatively projects a stereotype that rejects any woman who is different as non empowering... That is not what feminism should be.

Bulbul was not normal horror genre, it was real life horror which women goes through during social injustices like child marriage, sexual abuse, physical abuse. Real life horror for every Women maybe that's why we feel connected. Problem with kabir Singh type movies has been that, after seeing that type of movies people think Kabir is a hero but it's not true. Maybe preeti's characters has her own belief, own perspective but we can't ignore the wrong doings which Kabir did and after all that mayhem he created, he had happy ending.

I watched this movie. I liked it only partially. I wish that movie delved deep into the inner workings of ISRO scientists. Getting into their individual lives is okay but they didn't fully flesh out the characters and didn't show how things happen. I don't have problem with dance sequences but in this movie the makers could have fleshed out other important aspects instead of spending time on dance and songs.

As someone that has been following you for some years now, I have to say that I had build up an opinion of you as a great in-depth reviewer in terms of pure quality but missing the mark in terms of the socio political context in which cinema is based. It's not just about taking pot shots at movies, it's actually very important to be aware of and highlight the impact of cinema on society and vice versa. I am so thankful that you decided to put this video out, as it shows how much growth you have had not just as a film reviewer (which is plenty!) but as a human being. Respect you for taking ownership and acknowledging other perspectives. I will definitely follow your videos more closely now.

This happens mostly for some of the old movies which we once considered to be classics and when watched now, we don't feel the same magic or whatever way we felt earlier. It's mainly because the requirement of we audience keep changing with time and hence movies evolve too. The movie which we now regret appreciating earlier might have been created keeping in mind wat the audience needed at that point of time. But some masterpieces are timeless ❤️. And btw I truly appreciate you for doing a video like this 👍

What I feel is, instead of going into intricacies and making judgements on right or wrong projected in the film.... One needs to immerse themselves into the world that exists in the film and accept it as it is. World is not all good and you will find good~bad, pessimists~optimists, violent~non-violent people even in your housing societies... as cliché goes "films are mere reflection of the society". Although it's good to point flaws in the film, reviewers should abstain from passing judgements, for e.g:- on how a character should have behaved, etc. All said and done, respect you for your honesty and courage (for self-introspection of your own reviews). Other than that, what I like about this channel is that you review all language films which I believe is really commendable and makes us aware that there is a cinema (that exists) beyond "bolly" and "holly" !!
