My homemade tailgate(second to last truck) is actually fully functional it is held closed by motorcycle straps not bungie cords and when I unhook them it folds down like a regular tailgate!

The old Ford Rangers were tough, I've owned over a dozen of them, I had an 85 2wd long bed that we put about 2000lbs of scrap auto parts that we hauled out of his parts store, and a 86 2wd extended cab we hauled an older Lincoln Town car with on a trailer.
