I learned a number of valuable things, so thank you. But I hoped you were going to use an actual domestic sewing machine. It seems like most KZbin quilters have the money to buy big expensive machines with enormous throats, plenty of room to stuff a quilt through, like yours. But fancy machines like this are not what most of us can afford and use. Can you do at least one video with tricks on a common machine with a 4-5" throat?

I agree 100%! I don't have the money to buy a expensive domestic machine. My brother and Kenmore have a lot smaller throat.

Which Juki are you quilting with? I have a Juki Kirei which I bought like-new used at huge savings. My machine has 12" of throat space, and it makes quilting big quilts a breeze. And with the smart feed, it makes straight line quilting enjoyable too. It also has many other nice features. The truth of the matter is this: You cannot comfortably quilt large quilts on many domestics that have a little bit of throat space. It can be done, and I did it on my Bernina B530. Oh , it has a stitch regulator and all that, but at 7.5" of throat space, it was like wrestling an allipython. I found myself dreading quilting. I never quilt on it anymore, but I love it for other stuff. I have had not had good luck with Microtex on my Juki for quilting. I was getting skipped/dropped stitches (and I didn't have this with my Bernina) as well as needle failures (breaking/bent) and thread breaking. When I switched from Microtex to a topstitch needle (with an elongated eye), I had perfect results. I think that because the Juki is a faster machine and the elongated eye provided freer/smoother movement through the eye. I concluded that the Microtex was too delicate for the higher speed. It is however my favorite piecing needle.

Rob, this has helped me so much. Your mistakes and solutions are so helpful. New quilters use the same thread color and the same kind of thread in the top and bobbin. Also, a busy quilt back hides our mistakes better. Rob was so brave to use a solid light color for the backing and two different colors. Looking forward to the next tutorial.

Hi from Wales UK I have to oust my husband off the small dining table we have when I want to do any quilting as we only have a small bungalow but I have always used oilcloth to protect the table surface and this is great for pin basting as it is slippery on top so the points of the safety pins just glide along and don't go through to damage my tables surface. I too have bought some clamps as at over 70 crawling around on the floor to baste my quilts was getting very difficult and I got fed up of pinning the carpet to my quilt back!!!

Awesome video! I’m currently up to the FMQ on my queen size quilt which I have to do with a Bernina350 as I’ve done before. However, I’m thinking of hand quilting the centre first because that part gets really really hard to manoeuvre due to the limited throat space of the machine. I was having so many issues with large quilts on my Bernina B530 I bought a used Juki Kirei with 12" of throat space. I can comfortably quilt my largest quilts on the Juki, and it has increased my quilting enjoyment. (But I love to piece on my Bernina).

I had a used kenmore when I started and it wasn't easy but I was able to do it for many quilts, nothing bigger than a double size for my own sanity. Start with couch cuddlers or baby size until you are comfortable. Even placemats to start would be great until you get the swing of it. You can also "build up" your own extension table around your machine inexpensively , I purchased "insulfoam" 48" long and Styrofoam form packages and covered in plastic and places around my machine which was probably the best thing I ever did to make the quilting doable on that Kenmore, no more fighting to keep the quilt from falling and dragging.

You don’t want a cat sitting on your quilt which is under your sewing machine and table while you quilt. That cat creates a drag on your quilt. I have had three cats who have done this while I quilt on my Handi Quilter , Sweet 16 sit down machine.

I have a machine that’s an old fancy machine that does embroidery but has a short throat, I just think you need to do the best you can with what you have. I feel there is something wrong w the tension on the machine he is using because you shouldn’t see the black on the back side when he is using that green thread. There are other companies that have a long throat w basic stitches that are reasonably priced, I know my dealer I go to does w the Janome and Brother brands, and they are great machines. Plus maybe you can find a used one reasonably priced w a store warranty. My last 2 machines were used.

A stitch regulator may help with the bobbin thread appearing on the top even if it is so tiny. It also may help with the looped threads on the back.

Does your Juki have a stitch regulator? I haven’t been able to be successful at FMQ without one.

The Juki does not have a stitch regulator; however, it is very easy to FMQ without it. The key is finding a machine speed that fits with your hand movements.

Saw another KZbin ( sorry forget who it was) showed how you set the speed (a Juki) to where you are comfortable and then "floor" the foot pedal to keep the stitches even, for me closer to turtle speed.

We know how important CC can be so we are adding real srt files to the recorded and edited videos. I do not think that is possible even for autogenerated cc during live streams. Once the live feed ends, KZbin will automatically create cc, it won’t be as accurate, but better than nothing.

Many people have machine with 10-12 harps, it is still a domestic machine, but I have already done another video on a 7” and next I hope to get the Featherweight out for some FMQ. It can be done.
