Run for All, Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon on Sunday 14th May 2023.
Finishing time of 3:49.06
Bit misty and chilly when setting out, but by the time reaching Leeds, the sun had come out and it was starting to heat up, by the time the race started it was already quite warm and it just got hotter and hotter.
The build up hadn't been great since the Sheffield Half with a few niggles and unable to get all the long runs in that I wanted to, but had been out for a 23 mile run before the taper, so was confident of completing the distance.
Started off okay, kept the pace steady and was a little quicker that 8min/mile, or just a little slower gong uphill, until about mile 17, where the heat and the long hills started to take their toll, at which point I started getting cramps in the calves.
Hydrating and taking on electrolytes when ever possible did little to help and before long started to get cramps in the quads too and so getting to the end was a trial in pain management, trying to stretch out to ease the quads and the calves every few minutes just to get to the end, including a stop just before the entrance to the stadium, in order to get over finish line.
A very scenic course with some great views out from the north of Leeds, the crowds and support were fantastic, but the hills and the heat were brutal.
