When your defense can’t get stops and the opposing team is scoring touchdowns on every drive, punting on 4th down might seem like the safe play. Pinning them inside their own 10-yard line could help, but if they’re driving the length of the field anyway, punting just burns more clock and delays the inevitable. In this scenario, going for it on 4th down, even from your own 30, can be the smarter play if your offense is clicking. Converting keeps your drive alive, increases your chances to score, and keeps the ball out of the opponent's hands longer. If you fail, you at least shorten their drive, leaving more time for your offense to respond. It’s a high-risk, high-reward approach based on game flow and clock management.
@attichatchsound-bobkowal53284 күн бұрын
Disagree in that one case. Risk/reward ratio was too great. They were up. They might've given the defense a fighting chance with a punt. I understand wanting to reduce T O P for GB but setting up a sure- fire score for GB is a worse alternative.

It's two sides of the same coin. Live by the sword, die by the sword. I truly believe Dan will leave behind an incredible legacy and will be a hero in Detroit forever. The other thing is people keep leaving out the obvious context of our defense being severely hampered. Dan has learned to play it cool and relax on the aggressive calls when necessary. He obviously felt the offense needed to end it. We ride or die with this current regime. They've done nothing to lose our faith.

The narrative that Dan cost the Lions the NFC title game has to stop. Dan didn't fumble the ball on his own 25. Dan didn't tip an interception to a SF receiver inside the Lions own 10 yrd line. Dan didn't drop a ball on a fourth down attempt. If they had kicked the FG instead it would have resulted in a ripple effect that would have changed the decisions made by both sides the rest of that game. It's not binary. You can't just tack that 3 pts onto the score and say, "the game would have been tied." It's the opinion of a simpleton.
@MrSprigg4 күн бұрын
So many people want to whine about 'Campbell cost them the game because he gambled and it backfired.' Well, if Reynolds catches either of those 4th down passes, the Lions win the game and go to the Super Bowl. If Jahmyr doesn't fumble, the Lions win the game and go to the Super Bowl. If Aiyuk doesn't make the most insane catch since Lynn Swann, the Lions win the game and go to the Super Bowl. None of those are Dan's fault. Anyone claiming otherwise is an ignorant tool who can't be trusted to comment on football.

What people dont consider is that NOT going for it is just as much of a liability often times. You have to weigh the scenario. We have the best O-line in the league with amazing RBs. We convert 4th downs at a VERY high percentage. Him NOT going for it on 4th down in the NFC championship game last year before the half likely had more to do with them losing the game than when he DID go for it. Frankly, dropped passes and that insane bad bounce off Vildors face is what REALLY cost the game. Every time some conservative coach takes the FG or punts it away and loses the game, you could argue they SHOULD have gone for it. That 4th down in our own territory WAS the right call. It looked crazy to some people who cannot imagine the game of football evolving. But our defense was beaten down, gassed, 4th stringers (several who had only gotten here 3 days earlier) and he put the ball in the offense’s hands. He also made sure WE had 3 possessions and the Packers had 2. If he punts there, the Packers likely walk down the field and score after eating up clock and we lose that game. The worst case scenario there is that they score a TD QUICKLY and we have the ball at the end of the game. That is TRUE clock management and game management in this NFL that favors offense FAR more.
@michaelmilam34974 күн бұрын
Yep, call out the one fail on 4th down we had in 5 attempts…yep Dan Campbell must be reckless because how could he go for it on 4th down after making 3 consecutive 4th down conversions…and yeah he must’ve been reckless as well going for it a 5th time when they could’ve just kicked the field goal for the lead and gave the ball back to the Packers with 40 plus seconds on the clock(an eternity in football)…instead of what he did which at worst would’ve sent the game into overtime and at best, well we all saw how that went…no time on the clock for Green Bay and a walk off win…but yeah Dan Campbell is an awful coach for trusting his team to succeed…🤦♂️

Let's keep it 💯 In last year's NFC Championship game against SF, Head Coach Cambell didn't trust his defense, especially the DB's, from stopping anyone. And he wasn't wrong. That's why he wanted to keep the ball in the hands of his offense. I still think they should have used some better play calls in some of those situations, but no one really expects St. Brown to drop a perfectly thrown ball that hits him directly in his hands. He had the same mindset with the most recent game against GB. The extremely depleted defense held up fairly well in the first half. Second half they were kind of pedestrian and Love was able to exploit their lack of impact players at key positions. The interior eventually started getting pushed around on a lot of Jacobs runs. I personally would have gone for all of the same 4th downs with the exception of the one on our 30. The risk to reward ratio of going for it at that moment, on that side of the field, did not make sense to me. And it did gift them 7 easy points.

The Lions lost to SF in the championship game because the Lions had five dropped passes, two by Josh Reynolds. Gibbs had a fumble. Any Lion fan since the early 1960's still hates the Ford family today, myself included. On the other hand, Campbell is still the best coach the Lions have ever had, since the Ford's took over the team in 1961. I would never put Mike Valenti in the category of Rob Parker. The Ford family did Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson wrong. Alex Karras hated the Ford family. Bobby Layne hated the Ford family. The list goes on.

@MrSprigg The only issue I have with Sheila, so far. She said nothing to the press, after the league openly screwed the Lions in Dallas last year. The Lions had prove the call was fixed against the Lions. Taylor Decker was 🎤 mic. Sheila could of released the audio from the game. During the Barry Sanders years, I could count on one hand, how many bad calls went against the Lions. My theory is, Sanders wanted out of Detroit. He realized the Ford's were not dedicated to winning. They were losing good players to free agency. Sanders had, at least two great years in him. The Lions were offerd the world by a couple of teams in a trade. The Lions told Sanders you play for us, or retire. My theory, after Sanders retired. The other owners declared war on the Ford's. Officials were the weapon. Barry Sanders made all the owners of the NFL money. When Sanders and the Lions came to their town to play, it was a guaranteed sell out. Every fan of every franchise wanted to see Sanders live. The greatest offensive player in the history of the NFL. The atrocious officiating against the Lions started after Sanders retired. During the Joey Harrington years. It was fever pitch, and beyond the pale during the Stafford era. You could write a book or do a two hour documentary of bad officiating against the Lions. It seemed to dissipate after Stafford was traded. The Ford's were always silent after these ridiculous calls against their team. Stafford was always silent. Jim Swartz was the only coach that did speak up. One of the reasons he was fired. N.Suh hated Stafford for not speaking up after the Lions got screwed in 2014-2015 playoff game in Dallas. Jerry Jones got the Brandon Pettigru interference call reversed. Jim Caldwell should of pulled his team off the field in protest. This would of embarrassed the league. Stafford complained on the field. He said nothing to the press. Suh never forgave him. Suh told the press in tears "They cheated us" The Lions needed that playoff win. The city of Detroit needed that playoff win for the fans. I believe Suh would of re-signed with the Lions. Caldwell kept silent.

Letting them, (the players) decide what they're comfortable with is admirable. 2. In his initial press conference he said this team would take on the identity of the city. This city has been through a lot and has never stopped clawing it's way out of a tough situation. It never lied down and quit, it just keeps clawing, never taking the easy road but continues to move forward. This Team has done exactly that. If you don't like that the lions gamble to bad. What other coach in the NFL has done all that? without DAn Campbell we wouldnt have made it as far last year or this year. As for Mike Valenti. Mike is consistent and for the most part fair and likes and wants the lions to win. Yeah he has a few biases for instance when it came up to last years Michigan cheating scandal. I wouldn't put all the blame on Dan for losing against San Francisco as Rob Parker did. If Josh Reynolds would not have dropped 2 perfectly catchable passes, we are in! Immediately after, he was seen laughing on the sideline. The Lions were correct in telling him to pack his bags and leave! That was not acceptable!

I ain’t gone lie D I’m really starting to think Rob a real life you know what 🐱. Cause who would say Dan Campbell a terrible coach because he’s single handily changing the way football is played in a Great way. Dan Campbell is the Steph Curry of the NFL. I said it first. Go 🦁

Rob Parker is still bitter than the Lions were awful for the majority of the time he covered the team.

This is why Rob Parker bounces from job to job with minimal success. Conversely Dan Campbell could march into the Detroit Lions front office and demand the following terms. 10 year extension, adjusted annually to make him the highest paid NFL coach each and every year. He would get that extension.

You can find Mr. Parker bellied up to the stack at 24 seconds in Berkley 3-5 nights a week. That said, if you really want to understand Rob, ask him about Lee Smith the baseball player.

I didn t like the 31 yard line either but when someone said .we put it to the 20 yard line or better we give them a chance to go down the field burn way more clock and maybe not enough to score .our defense was starting to get beat .I'm not sure if this is what he thought but we did have to win time of possession to beat them .

I have never cared about Rob Parker after he made the comment years ago about RG3 not being a brother. From what I can remember, he was good buddies with Janelle Hill, who made outrageous comments about Dan Campbell when he got the coaching job for the Lions. Now I think we all know where this is going

Ok, follow with me on this for a second. The Lions went for it on 4th down 5 times; 4th and 1 from their own 49, later in that same drive on 4th and goal, those 2 plays directly led to 7 points (instead of either punting it away, or 3 points from a FG), then again on 4th and goal again leading to 7 points (instead of 3) that is a net gain of 11 points. If they had punted the ball away to GB instead of going for it at their own 30, there is no guarantee that GB doesn’t score (because in the second half, the lions only forced a punt on 1 drive). If they hold GB to a FG on that drive, that would be a net loss of 4 points to GB, and they would have had less time on the clock for their final drive, and the score would have potentially been GB 27 DET 23, meaning the lions need at touchdown to take the lead, and they would have been forced to take that last 4th down attempt regardless, and still need to get into the end zone. What I’m trying to say is his decisions were CORRECT, not just once, but EVERY TIME!

Rob Parker is losing his credibility with takes like this, what little he has left. He just shoots crap from his mouth to get a reaction. It'a not logical, it's not though provoking. Its just arrogant idiocy and he thinks he's the smartest person in the room.

I don't know too much about Rob Parker. I've always had an intuition whenever he spoke/wrote that he introduced his weird takes to spark a conversation and mask how incompetent he is at his job

After watching Thursday's thriller and the hype with the game. Us fans are going to watch Sundays games and it'll be boring compared to the Lions game. We're all going to see that too many coaches in the league can't take risks or are too conservative and have the play it safe mentality. That's why the Cardinals lost to the Vikings last week because instead of going for it on 4th down they kicked a field goal instead and lost the game by 1 point.

Rob Parker has ALWAYS been a clown. Look up the moronic stuff he had to say about Russell Wilson a few years ago. Even Stephen A. called him out on it.

Rob Parker was wrong on his take about Dan Cambell, true.. but, he is right about one thing. Dan Cambell gambling and aggressive play calling nature can cost the Lions in the playoffs and a trip to the superbowl. Let's hope is the opposite and the Lions prosper under his leadership in the postseason. Let's go Lions.😃👍

Campbell's a really good coach and I agreed with all the 4th down decisions against GB - except the one at his own 30. That was really dumb. It did cost the Lions against SF last year in the NFC Championship game.

I’ve met him a couple times, He worked for channel 4 in Southfield use to stop at the Kroger all the time in greenfield and 9 mile. I would say this dude always talked down on the Lions. When we where bad he used to have a field day clowning us, now where legit same thing. Never liked this dude, Don’t like Valenti either, We really need to stop calling In on 97.1 and letting him and Rico beard have a bad influence on our team that they don’t like to begin with. Rob Parker is the one got fired from ESPN then dismissed off FS1 now who is the real clown again
