I’ve seen two from this second video, the big merino and the watering can. Ravensthorpe in WA is well known for its wildflowers. Rambo the big merino (sheep that produce ultra fine grade wool) is definitely a ram no matter which way you look at it. From the front you can see his curly horns, which ewes don’t have, and approaching from the rear…

Obviously I’m best friends with Larry the Lobster. I’ve been to Big Pineapple, Big Cow, Big Banana, Big Mango, The Giant Koala, Big Guitar, Big Bench, Big Bee, Big Cherries, The Big Cockroach, Big Olive, Big Orange, Big Pelican x2, the Big Pigeon, The Big Rocking Horse, The Big Santa (I hope Cozzi does a great job restoring him. Can’t wait to see where his is going to be placed), The Big Scotchman, Big Lizzie, The Big Mallee Root, The Giant Murray Cod,The Public Purse and The Big Wool Bales. Crikey, in my old age I realise I’ve travelled a little bit.

They use to say 'Australia rode on the sheep's back' (economy in the 1950's) and that was the Merino. The Australian Merino was larger, more robust sheep that could yield up to 10 times more fleece than the original Spanish variety. Later on coal and iron ore had replaced wool as the major earner.

But for context the Big Merino is a 4 story high replica of the mascot/logo for a former Fuel Company, Golden Fleece Company.... as an homage to the branded roadhouses (think motorway services)... for some reason the photographer didn't use the rear shot of "Rambo", there's almost a middle stump... a pair of bush oysters that'd be almost 4m long.

Always had a soft spot for the Big Lobster (Larry). My mum was from down that way and whenever we went to visit my grandparents we would stop there for lunch. There is a restaurant on site. Also my dad built the bridge just past Larry in the 50’s. Although he went on to bigger things like solving landslide issues in Hong Kong, every time I’m down there I get a photo of me on his bridge.

Frankie the Gnome is a couple blocks from my house 😅 The thought of him acting as giant mirror during summer crossed my mind as well, but he doesn't. He's part of some sort of freeway project. Every few years they place a sculpture at a certain part of the freeway, then a few years later that sculpture is moved to McClelland Sculpture Park which is an area where you can go wonder round looking at all the other sculptures, have a picnic and so on

The big merino is on the edge of Goulburn (about an hour north of Canberra). It was originally in the middle of town to encourage people to stop on the way between Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne. However when the town was bypassed they put the whole structure on a truck and moved it it it’s current location about a mile up the road. There is now a McDonald’s, service station and bakery connected to it

Hervey Bay is where the humpback whales migrate to from Antarctica. It’s in subtropical Queensland and called the whale nursery as they have their calves there and then when the weather warms up migrate back with their calves to Antarctica. They migrate between June and October and you can cruise out on a charter and see them. You can also see them from the beach on the Gold Coast . But if you get a chance to go whale watching - it’s epic.

Many local freeways have a series of sculture/large display objects along the road sides well clear of traffic. The Chrome Gnome was errected beside the newly opened Penninsula Freeway going down the east side of Port Philip Bay about/over a decade ago. It was changed to other large sculptures over time snd the Gnome seems to have moved to Frankston, not sure where exactly.

Here in Gippsland Victoria, we have a 25-metre statue of a golden pheasant called Bruno. He is made of wood and stands at the entrance of the family wildlife and amusement park Gumbuya World. Initially, the amusement park was a pheasant farm before being converted into a park in 1978. In October 2011, tragedy struck and Bruno was vandalized. He had an explosive attached to his rear end which blew up his backside and caused shattering cracks in his body and neck. Fortunately, the suspect was arrested and charged for damages amounting to $50,000.

The original ‘big thing’ was the Big Pineapple, at Woombye, near Nambour on the Sunshine Coast, which opened in 1971 (less than an hour’s drive from my place). However, the tradition of roadside monuments and tourist oddities in Australia goes back to the ‘Dog on the Tuckerbox’ monument (inspired by a poem about the life of a drover) first erected 8km outside Gundagai in 1926, and made permanent in 1932. My favourite of the modern ‘big things’ must be the Big Bogan - at Nyngan, in the Bogan Shire in outback New South Wales.

@@keithkearns93 Yes, that’s true. I stand corrected. The Big Banana at Coffs Harbour, NSW, opened as a fun park just before Christmas in 1964. @@keithkearns93 OK. It might have started as a roadside oddity and a gift shop attached to a farm, but within a couple of years, it became much more. Since the 1960s, it has hosted events from motor races to music festivals. From the Website: “The plaque commemorates the 50th anniversary of The Big Banana which was opened in 1964 to advance the banana and tourism industries. In 1964 John Landi wanted something to make passing traffic stop at his road side banana stall. He had heard of a "Big Pineapple" in Hawaii and thought that something big would definitely stop traffic. With assistance of 1200 pounds and local engineer, Alan Chapman, who set about designing the giant banana by cutting the best looking banana he could find into 40 pieces and developing plans from which builders could work from, the Big Banana could become a reality. Builder Alan Harvey started the construction in September 1964 with the work to be completed before Christmas. The biggest banana in the world was officially opened on December 22 that year. Not long after, John Enevoldson joined as a partner and they expanded with 20 more plantation acres, a shop, cafe and a larger car park. In 1968 John Landi retired and sold his share to John Enevoldson who continued building the business until 1988 when it was sold to Horticulture World, which was part owned by local businessman Bob Johnston. Bob continued expanding the Big Banana into an educational showcase before undergoing a $30 million redevelopment that re- opened in June 1989. The Big Banana Fun Park now boasts the biggest Water Park between Sydney and the Gold Coast, a state-of-the-art Laser Tag Arena, Toboggan Ride, Ice-Skating Rink, “The World of Bananas” theatre and plantation tour experience, 36 hole Mini Golf course, Go Bananas Fun Zone, the biggest Giant Slide in the country, know as “The Racer”, Going Bananas Cafe, Gift and Souvenir shop, Candy Kitchen, Opal Centre, Reptile World, and 4D.”

Although, things may have changed since covid.

These days the breeding line has also been permitted to be exported. Australian Merino wool still fetches premium prices. And stir is a big part of Australian income on world exports. avoid meat ants. you walk across one of their mounds, chaos ensues. hunters who kill foxes, eg, ( feral pests in australia) sometimes lay carcasses on ant mounds & meat ants will dispose of the carcass.

Hey Rob..do you and Charlie have an itinerary on where your landing and areas you'll be travelling to....if so, will it be posted.
@RobReacts1
@RobReacts1 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, we dont have a strict itinery atm. I think we will potentially wing it. But we roughly know we are planning on going Melbourne, Adelaide(Great Ocean Road), to Tassy and back to Melbourne. Hopefully seeing some AFL! We are planning on doing a meetup in Melbourne and Adelaide as well.

By sheer coincidence My Childhood Best Friend lives in Ayr where that Big Carpet Snake is. Unlike many Aussies Snakes "Carpet Pythons" aren't Venomous, but don't trust them with Small Children and Pets. Amongst the pets Her Family have owned they've had a least one Snake alongside the usual Dogs 🐕 and Birds.

@stuartrowley1981
@stuartrowley1981 2 жыл бұрын
Most of these things aren't part of the big things in Oz most of these things are statues . The proper big things like the lobster, rocking horse, Scotty the Scotsman, big pineapple and so on tge really big ones are all tourist attractions and can go inside them whether they're shops like the rocking horse and lobster or there tourist information centres the 'real' big things are huge and the whale and dog and so on are just little statues that ppl have called big so they dont miss out on having a big thing in there area or state. The original big things have barely been shown in the videos. The real big things put most of these to shame.

You might like the ant sculpture but watch out for the real ants in Australia, they aren't very nice. Step on one and your foot may ache for days. Apparently the Australian Bull ant has the most painful sting in the world. I learned that from a British documentary 😉 If you're out for a picnic check the ground for ants 😉
