Roy and HG have a real depth of sport and cultural knowledge that belies their silliness. They started as a quasi pisstake of generic sports commentators with HG commentating and Roy on colour, its all ad lib , no scripts. They remind me a lot of Bob and Vic with a touch of early Alan Partridge. Funny thing is their actual commentating of live sport events is better than the official commentary , their rugby league calls for State of Origin are legendary

You have to remember this aired during the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the whole joke is, during the day there would be commentators being super serious about the events of the Olympics, So they're pretending as if there show is as super serious as the real Olympics broadcasts, it's similar to that satirical comedy style of Russell Coight. The show was called "The Dream". For the 2000 Sydney Olympics all the mascots were native Australian animals, 7:14 "Fatso's flashbacks" is a reference to the show's mascot for the Olympics "fatso the fat ass wombat".

1 - these two men have been doing this act for just under 40 years, they started on radio, and absolutely love sport.. the main point of their act is to one up each other, like the four Yorkshiremen sketch, but to never to be derogatory to the other. 2 - their programme for this clip was "the dream", it was 2000 and the Sydney Olympics, so in the evening they'd put a comic spin on the days highlights, interview guests in front of a studio audience. 3 - Eddie the Eel was a real Olympian, he was the sole competitor from Equatorial Guinea, and returned at the next Olympics with sponsorship from Speedo, with a couple of other athletes. He was embraced as a hero for having a go, this was the first time he'd swam in a full length regulation pool, he'd qualified for wild card entry in a 25m pool. 4 - they'd created an "unapproved" mascot called Fatso (the Fat Arsed Wombat), which caused issues when it appeared all over the village and at Medal Ceremonies... instead of Millie, Syd and Olly, an Echidna, Kookaburra and Platypus.... Roy and H.G. hated saccharine crassness of these mascots.
@neumanmachine3781
@neumanmachine3781 2 жыл бұрын
They used to refer to the official mascots as Ollie, Molly and dickhead. There’s a statue of Fatso the Fat-Arsed Wombat (named after the wombat in 80’s tv soap A Country Practice) at Sydney Olympic Park to this day.

These guys are in character. These names are their aliases for their sports commentary which is always done in this style taking the mickey out of what they're saying. They have been working together for so long now that they feed off each other and theatres still on air. It's all ad lib and they do this commentary live to air without any laughs most of the time. You will occasionally see one start laughing and the other will just carry on with the commentary but they rarely lose it! The Dream was their nightly take on the days events during the Sydney Olympics. It was hilarious as the international athletes didn't quite know how to take them! They didn't know if they were being real or not which made it all the funnier to us Aussies cos we knew it was all commedy! They are now just known as Roy and HG they're so well known here! Look up more of their work cos it's brilliant! They know their sport but they also know how to make us laugh!

Roy and HG were so successful in Sydney doing all sorts of sports, in the same style, but particularly rugby league, that they were able to adapt it to Melbourne and Aussie Rules…and believe me, that’s not easy to do. There are lots of things that Melbourne and Sydney do not see eye to eye on. You can see that in the movie They’re a Weird Mob when Graham Kennedy, a Melbourne comedy giant for very many years, just didn’t hit it off in Sydney until his later years with the ribald Blankety Blanks. There’s a popular Melbourne variant, the Coodabeen Champions, where 5 or 6 guys are just football fans doing pisstakes on football with funny phonecalls (Lance from Lara, Peter from Peterborough, Digger, Wayne from Wantirna), from 10 till noon on Saturday mornings. They must have been doing it for upwards of 40 years. One became an MP, one is now or has been a Victorian Supreme Court Judge. Greg Champion does songs about footballers to familiar tunes. And every week, they’ll talk to people from country football clubs…players playing their 500th game etc. Naturally, the football I’m alluding to is Aussie Rules. Nearly every country town, population permitting, will have a football/netball club where the two sports share precincts, colours and fixtures.

These guys were total legends in their day! I remember before the Olympics, listening to Roy & HG call the AFL Grand Final (on radio/sound down on the tellie)... legends. Part of the absolute fun of it all was the idea that they were both really just trying to get the other one to laugh. A giggle simply wasn't enough... you were constantly expecting one to lose it (as you usually had at home listening). "The Dream" (Olympic Coverage) was top notch, but I'd say some of their best stuff was the "Festival of the Boot" (AFL).

The West Australian Junior Mens Gymnastic team t-shirt after this featured pictograms of some elements and they were labelled after Roy and HGs commentary eg. Party Date, Flat Bag, Hello Boys

Ah yes, the legendary - Eric the Eel... from what I understand, he didn't have a swimming pool to train in, in his home town.

You got it straight up. Two of the best piss takers Australia ever produced. Oh and you might be right about Roy's hair. A little greyer but looks just the same as when he taught high school English back in the early 1970's ( Glendale high NSW '73 '74 ish). Think he was straight out of uni. Smart arse from the get go. Only English lessons I ever enjoyed.

This was live. Yes you see them almost smile every once in a while. The comment about the Russian ending was because the Russian gymnasts had messed up a lot of their landings at the time.

Don't forget to view their call on the Australian synchronised swimming pair and the swimmer's interpretation of how the Sydney harbour Bridge was built. Such a fascinating historical interpretation of one of Sydney's most iconic landmark's. You'll be inthrawled.

Understand, none of that was rehearsed or edited. For years, they used to do a live radio commentary of both the AFL and NRL Grand Finals and were able to maintain that same level of mock seriousness for 3-4 hours ... live. In fact, they had a radio show every Saturday afternoon (JJJ) where they stayed in character live for 3 hours every week. And yes, they did regularly crack each other up. Their best moments were when they struggled to hold it together. Their real names are John Doyle (Roy) and Greg Pickhaver (HG), and along with John Clarke (an adopted Kiwi) were among Australia's funniest and smartest comedians of the late 20th century.

Like Gary MacDonald (Norman Gunston), they were both actors before they were comedians. Apparently those improvisation classes can be put to good use..
