Its certainly a neat way to do it, but fighting with the clip when the gun is pulling the other way is painful! Handle with a solid anchor point on it is definitely easier to use.

All personal preferences. Do whatever works for you. I just know of a guy who had his belt reel hook, hook up in the reef and nearly drown him. If the loop was on the gun and the clip on the reel then the loop on the gun will be pulling the other way.

@@RobAllenSpearfishing yes, it is easier to hang on to the gun by the barrel or handle then by holding on to a shark clip though. A lot of people i dive with use their reels that way is all.

@@spearo16 Many now use a 1m bungee between the gun and the belt reel, all clipped in before shooting. If you need to let go, it is already connected. The bungee is somewhat stiffer than line so not so easy to entangle.

Since then 1950's my Dad first, started using stainless cable on a Penn 65 saltwater reel attached to the speargun to play larger fish. Real drag and attached a 2 drag at the muzzle. Cave dvellers needed stoping before reaching the hole and pelagics let run. No cutoffs. Cable sinks inmediatelly and doesn't float arround for you to get tangled. Dyneema on a belt reel, not a good idea. A float line beter

Assuming you deployed the belt reel and you have to go back down to get the fish out of hole, what do you do with the belt reel. Tie it off to a float or take back down with you and could that be a tangle danger.

Best is to get the boat guys to throw you a float and clip it to that. It is very easy to disconnect the reel from your belt.

Think of the bet reel as an extension of your gun's reel. If shot without a belt reel, only a gun reel, one would pass the gun to the surface buddy, the boat or clip it into a float. The float option is also nice as no diver is kept busy handling a line and one can adjust the line length at the float's clip ;-)
