The Munich Olympics was the beginning for ABC News as a serious news organization. NBC and CBS dominated television during much of the 60's and 70's. The leader in the control room during the crisis was Roone Arledge, who later became president of the news division. Peter Jennings was already a seasoned foreign correspondent and Munich was his first major breaking news story.

I have a thumbs up to you, because ABC was lagging behind the other 2 networks, but when Frank Reynolds took a major role in 1968 (especially with the Robert Kennedy assassination, then Apollo 11 the next year) I think they really had a lot of respect from everyone.

I was 10 at the time, and unfortunately this is one of my earliest memories as far as new stories go. Shocking and horrifying. That guy in the face mask symbolized a lot that was wrong in the 20th century. Amazing how a grainy, black and white shot can prove so memorable and symbolic.

@67nairb I think many of these vintage news broadcasts come from the Vanderbilt Archives collection, which began recording them in 1968. I'm not sure but I believe the black and white may be simply due to the limited video recording technology of the era.

@arthurswchultz I'm sorry, I'm not sure what it could be unless it is somehow related to the device you are watching the clip on. The clip has been up since 2009 and has more than 82,000 views and 179 comments - this is the first time someone has mentioned not being able to hear any sound. The clip is also playing back right now as I'm replying, and the sound is definitely there. It is one channel only (not stereo) so that could also possibly be a reason depending on your speaker set up.

@laosuwan and i do have an example. I lived in dakar, senegal (west africa) for 8 years of my life. i was "rich," living in a poverty stricken largely islamic region. i heard the chants every morning. my house was broken into by men with guns one night, and when our neighbors were alerted, countless people came to our house in an effort to protect us. the burglars left empty handed. i know this may be a smaller scale that the example you had in mind, but the fact remains not ALL muslims are bad

@eyadooooo You are being COMPLETELY hypocritical! You say Jews have no right to take your land. Does that then excuse the fact that Palestinians killed innocent Jews during the Olympics? I think not. Also, who ever said that Jews want Israel exclusively? They still to this day want equality for all in Israel, and that includes no persecution to religion, race or nationality. If you don't believe me, then how do you explain all the peace talks Israel has attended with their neighboring countries?

I find it interesting all the bickering and fighting between those supporting Isrealis and those wishing they all died. I do wonder what the reaction from these people would be like if a massive nuclear war went off in the Middle East and Isreal emerged as the victor? Same if Iran or Syria emerged as the victor. Or, the more realistic possibility, nothing is left...

"Same if Iran or Syria emerged as the victor". Only Israel could emerge victorious in a nuclear war there, because it's the only country in the region that has nukes (at least 200 of them). Your comment is a sad illustration of the effectiveness of US propaganda.

While yes, realistically, only Isreal could emerge as the victor, truth has been stranger then fiction, and things can fall into place that could destroy Isreal. Do I think it would happen? No, I'd place a monetary bet on Isreal's victory. But the possibility exists.

I know it hasn't happened, but you have to realize that Nuclear Weaponary has only been a 'thing' for 70 years. No two Nuclear Powers have ever gone into an all out war and dipped into their stockpile of Nuclear weaponary. We both agree that Isreal is the one that will come out on top, I am just willing to look at the (Near non-existent) possibility that things could end up turning against them. I doubt it will, but strange things have happened before.
