Colombian guy here. In Colombia we have an expression that says "Don't give out Papaya". It is very widely used and it basically means that you should never let your guard down and never put yourself in a position of danger, nor give anyone the chance to take advantage of you. This is hardwired in our brains. You can live a life here, you definitely can, a good one at that. But this is not Switzerland. You have to be aware of where you are, go out in groups, especially at night, don't expose yourself too much. And that common wisdom applies, not just here, but in many many countries and you'll probably better off acting accordingly. But yeah, just don't act stupid. It's that simple.

There's a lot of people that want the 'authentic' experience when what they really need is the tourist version. Stick to the cruise itinerary, don't go chasing a nightlife, etc. etc. I lived for 2 years in Tijuana, met a lot of people that are like a second family to me. When I go back to visit there's areas that I won't touch even during the day and yet people expect to go to a place they've never been to without a guide or local friend like they're not a target. And yes, if malicious parties hear that gringo accent when you say 'taco', you start looking like a taco. Here's 10 commandments to reduce your chances of getting hurt: 1. have a local friend who can be your guide 2. don't go out at night 3. walk fast 4. don't be on your phone 5. be alert 6. know the language and know it well 7. don't drink anything you didn't watch 8. nothing good is interested in you for no reason 9. have plans and stick to them 10. don't carry anything you can't risk losing

And some people from the US are just flamboyant with their stuff. And it's really sad knowing that some people are going to get robbed because of what you talked about in the video. I wish I could give a lot of advise to tourists so they can avoid being robbed... but I also have to consider that many people do get robbed here because they come looking for sex workers and underage girls and are in places they shouldn't be, doing things they shouldn't do. Not the case of the video, but some of the people... you just know by watching the questions they make, the places they ask for and etc.

When I started packing, my mom called me specifically to tell me to leave all my jewelry and nice clothes at home. She explained that "looking American" would draw attention to myself and I could get robbed, kidnapped or worse. I kid you not, I walked on that plane with some jeans and a hoodie. I wore those same jeans for the three days that I stayed there. I just changed my top and wore very little makeup ( just foundation) But even still, the locals were constantly staring me down. When I asked my uncle why they always looked at me sideways, he explained that they knew I was from the states. He said that foriegners just have a "look"...mind you, I was as plain as plain can be. I lived for 3 years in Brazil, travelled around to Colombia, Ecuador, Argentina as well, never got in real trouble. Got scammed buying football tickets in Buenos Aires, but for the rest never had any problem. My experience to stay safe: 1. know where you're going, I triple check my plans with a lot of locals: hey I'm thinking of going that club over there, is it a nice club, is it safe? Can i go on foot, taxi? Is it safe at night? Are the taxis reliable? Locals know what's going on, so a lot of people warn you for example not to walk in a certain street or area, not to take a taxi on the street, use an app, watch out for drugs in your drinks etc.. 2. Don't stand out, use your phone as little as possible in the street, walk fast, don't wear a watch. 3. Keep your hormones under control. Don't mess with girls that have men with them, if you do, get along with the dudes first so their ego isn't hurt if you get close to any of their lady friends. Meet up at normal places, like a mall. Don't go to shady strip clubs. 4. watch out with drugs. I saw a lot of British, Australian, American tourists doing coke in the Colombian clubs/hostels. Know what the police will do to you if you get caught. Colombian police searched me once or twice for coke, luckily didn't do any of that. Some people really lack common sense and seem to look for spectacular stories to tell their friends back home..

As someone who has Nigerian immigrant parents, it has been ingrained into me to be aware of my surroundings practically since birth. Where we live though (Ireland) is relatively tame crime wise compared to other countries. A few weeks ago some friends and I were exchanging horror stories from visiting other countries and I was like damn I feel so sheltered living here. But yeah, it's important to know your surroundings and realise that you can't just go anywhere like the country you're coming from. Even the few times we've been to Nigeria we have to be cautious, because even though we're black they can still tell that we're not from around there, perhaps from the body language or something. We have to watch all our belongings like hawks because there are scammers everywhere. Even my mum who's Nigerian through and through and should have known better once got £1000 stolen from her in Lagos airport, and this was back in the 90s, it's much worse now. Now they're literally robbing people in their cars stuck in traffic. So if you're travelling anywhere, especially somewhere where it's obvious you're not from there and has a lot of crime, don't be stupid. Stick to the tourist traps, and have a guide that will travel with you as well. Don't go anywhere alone. Don't flash your belongings around, and try to wear inconspicuous clothing. Maybe then, and only maybe, you'll be safe.

11:42 being smart isn't relevant, it's all about experience and the way you grew up. If you grew up with crime around you, you will learn to look out for the red flags. If you live all cozy, you're in for a reality check. It was about a $2000-3000 lesson for this man which he will not forget.

My aunt recently visited Columbia, and as she was recording some of her trip with her phone, one of the locals approached her and demanded she hand it over. She did as the man said, and he started deleting photos and video from her library. Next to her was another tourist that was also recording, and when the man demanded his phone too, the tourist refused. After that, a group of other locals rushed the tourist, beat him, and took him away. He wasn't seen again after that. If you're gonna go to these kinds of countries, let go of your entire ego and just comply peacefully when you can. Even the police are afraid of the criminals in these kinds of places.

I've been out of the country a lot especially to DR and Colombia. A reputable hotel or Airbnb saves you a lot of this. They have to have ID no exceptions and most thieves are discouraged once you say that alone. Always have a safe in your room and lock away anything that's not immediately needed (ie. Wallet, Passport) Be suspecious of everyone and everything. If it's too good to be true, it probably is. Paying a little more money is better than paying with your life. It's better to hurt her feelings than wake up the next day and you're stuck with very few options. Always meet at a location you're familiar with or where they're familiar with you. Always be in control of the situation at all times and if they don't like that, then leave the situation. You suggest the next course of action don't ever let them suggest things to you. Be honest and upfront and don't try to get over on people, because the police are not your friends in these countries. The police get called and you end up having to pay the person and the police off too just to avoid jail time.
