I first saw Robben in LA at Donte’s on Lankershim Blvd. Back then (1978) he played a cherry 335 through a Mesa Boogie. What a sound. I’d never heard a guitar player mix blues and jazz the way he did. Russell Ferrante played piano that night. It was the early days of what would become The Yellowjackets.

Ford is constantly disrespected by all of these self proclaimed "experts" who publish lists of the top all time greatest guitarists. At a minimum I would rank him in the top 20 and it could be argued possibly even in the top 10 all time greats. Ford is unique in that he's not a pure jazz player or pure blues player or pure fusion player or pure rock player but he plays all of those genres of music exceptionally well. There aren't many other guitarists who can do that.
@VoodooApex4 жыл бұрын
Steve W Gary Moore can do all that. And he’s prolly breaking into 20 but, def not 10
@GTX11234 жыл бұрын
@@VoodooApex Gary Moore was known for his incredible blues to hard rock guitar skills but you are correct, he was a really good jazz player as well...
@VoodooApex4 жыл бұрын
Steve W He’s a real pariah for sure. I’m a fan of Ford but, he doesn’t really stick out. He’s always on the pocket ya know. Other guitarists have their own things that set them apart. Gary was just ferocious, it’s almost primal when he gets into his zone. SRV is a perfect player, it all comes out as if it was the studio version. Chuck Berry has all the tricks and knows when to utilize them for maximum effect. Roy Buchanan was unassumingly vicious. Derek Trucks is the greatest slide player of all time. Hendrix is the GOAT, whole different plain. Robben just fails to excite in a carved out path I think. He’s great tho 🤙🏽
@GTX11234 жыл бұрын
@@VoodooApex That's a really interesting perspective. Yeah, sometimes he does ride the pocket too much but Gary Moore didn't ride it enough LOL.
@enzo--LoL3 жыл бұрын
@@VoodooApex i feel the exact opposite. for me fords playing sticks out way more than moore - that being said i discovered gary moore quite late and listened to all the other blues giants before and didnt feel that he was unique in comparison, same with joe bonamassa. maybe i would feel different if i grew up with him, or discovered him first. however there is one thing that annoys me with ford its that his bands always sound like they come straight from dr.rhythm, especially on talk to your daugther it feels like he is playing some royalty free backing tracks of the youtube - just in 1988.

He's not explaining some stuff very deeply in this video. So in case anyone was wondering, the reason why these so called fouth chords work so well in this bluesy context is because they're part of the minor pentatonic scale. One could invent more voicings in fourths using the same scale. Keep practicing!
@robertlepine88015 жыл бұрын
agreed. not a very good lessons.Vague and not explaining very well.some players aren't good teachers ,even if they play well.
@VilleKuitunen65 жыл бұрын
@@robertlepine8801 Robben Ford is one of the best teachers around. He's exceptionally good. This video isn't the best, but it's meant to be a teaser of what TrueFire has to offer. I can recommend his courses, they aren't all for the beginner level, but if you are serious about the guitar then most definitely you should check them out. He also explains things very elaborately and thoroughly over there so no worries. Keep practicing!
@j.h.leonard5874 жыл бұрын
@@VilleKuitunen6 Agreed, he's a great instructor, he also outlines that the pentatonic scale works over these chords to begin with. From that we should be able to infer that extends across the lesson. If people aren't willing to take the time to listen to the pitch of the notes and work the voicings out for themselves then I wonder if a fully transcribed lesson would be of value. Some things require hard work; the more time it takes to work up mastery of a concept, the less likely you are to forget the method.
@Sobchak211 жыл бұрын
Well, my understanding is that these videos are taken from his truefire course. A number of people can just get all the information they need from this video. And if they can't, they just try a couple of positions until it sounds right. I guess if you get the full course you will find all the tabs and everything. But really, there an awful lot of information you can get for free here.
