Robber’s Roost Ranch is often associated with the Old West as a hideout for outlaws, particularly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Robber’s Roost Ranch in California has ties to the state's bandit history. It was a known hideout for notorious figures, including the bandit Tiburcio Vasquez, who used it as a base to escape from the authorities and plan his escapades.
Tiburcio Vasquez (1835-1875) was one of the most famous Californio bandits of the 19th century, operating primarily in Southern California. Born in Monterey, California, Vasquez's life of crime was fueled by his belief that Californios (Hispanic Californians) were being unjustly treated following the American conquest of California.
He became involved in crime at a young age, beginning as a horse thief and gradually working his way up to more notorious crimes, including robbery, cattle rustling, and even murder. Vasquez was charismatic and clever, often managing to elude capture through his deep knowledge of the California landscape and by leveraging sympathizers within local communities.
One of Vasquez's most famous exploits was the Tres Pinos robbery in 1873, which resulted in the death of three people. This act made him a high-priority target for law enforcement, and a large manhunt ensued. Despite his criminal activities, Vasquez was seen by some as a folk hero, akin to a Robin Hood figure, particularly among Californios who felt disenfranchised.
Vasquez was eventually captured in 1874 at a ranch in what is now West Hollywood. He was tried and found guilty of murder, and in 1875, he was hanged in San Jose. His legacy remains controversial-viewed as both a criminal and a symbol of resistance against the injustices faced by his community.
