Artists tend to be more productive when they're not bugs in a jar, and these guys seemed to always avoid being subjected to the musical/industrial complex.

Yes he did.The story goes while they were recording that particular song for the last waltz suite, he was looking for Richard Manual to sing it but he was nowhere to be found so he had to sing it himself.It was the second time that Robbie Robertson had to sing lead since ten years earlier when he sang lead on the song "Bessie Smith" from the Basement tapes album.

2 things: 1. "Bessie Smith" wasn't actually recorded in the basement. It was recorded either in 1968 or in late '69/early '70. 2. Robbie sang co-lead on a few more songs, those being To Kingdom Come, Knockin' Lost John, The Last Waltz Refrain and Ain't No More Cane.@@colinwilliams553
