Robbie Williams talks to Sandra Maischberger about his life as a superstar and the downsides associated with it. He gives insights into why, despite his success story, he has always had self-doubt since childhood. He was a schoolboy who couldn't read or do maths. And his father and idol abandoned his family when Robbie was still a child.
It was his grandmother who strengthened him with her unconditional love.
He was just 16 years old when he joined “Take That” - and became a drug
addict. All the touring and dancing pushed Robbie to the limit: “There was no space on tour to being reckless. But if there was any time off, I would suppose, how I would release the valve.”
Williams went to rehab several times. According to Williams, this was not
an isolated case for boy-and-girl-groups at the time. Williams describes how he has been living with depression for two and a half decades and why he was unable to enjoy concerts with up to 365,000 people for a long time “because I was so numb.”
Today, he has found happiness in his adopted home of America. His wife
Ayda, with whom he has lived here for 19 years, and his four children ground him every day. He admits that reliability and punctuality are virtues that he values highly. Perhaps this is because Williams himself has eight percent German genes, as he found out in a DNA test.
