Alex Hirsch actually said in a podcast that Robbie didnt know that the disk had a backwards message because he realy ripped it off from some heavy metal band that often have backwards messages in them. And he also said that Robbie never would have fought a twelve year old child, he just wanted to scare dipper.

Anyways, another good way he could've had his redemption was for it to be revealed that he actually cares & is nice for some people like a disabled or old family member. Or another way, Dipper & Mabel could've traveled to the future & now adult Robbie has become a better person (would've better if he married Wendy or smth)
