In this video I share a phrase that demonstrates how to use simple contrary motion within your solos to imply cadence based harmony.
The phrase is transcribed from a live performance of Bireli Lagrene playing 'Isn't She Lovely' by Stevie Wonder. Check out Bireli's performance here: • Bireli Lagrene - Isn't...
As mentioned in the video, you can find the transcription of the first form of Bireli's solo (+ the chord voicings used in the intro) on my Patreon page: / robbiebarnby
This transcription is full of great melodic language and was very fun to revisit after transcribing it many years ago! The phrase we focused on in the video happens at Bar 40 on the transcription and at 4:35 of Bireli's performance video.
I hope you enjoyed the video lesson!

Even a bass player like me understood this lol Brilliant explanation, brilliant execution. Never thought of tritone resolutions outside of the 3rd and b7 of dominants. You just won yet another subscriber!

Birelli has very electric modern jazz guitar albums early in his career which I used to listen to. He's a master.

Been following you for some time, some of the best jazz guitar educational content on YT definitely. I did a search on streaming apps and on your website, but didn't find anything - do you have any albums out where you play or bands that you're part of? Would love to listen to your playing outside of this educational context.

7:00 now you're noodling like Ted Greene! (Baroque sounding harmonic development/resolutions). Great to see you picking up stuff from Bireli. I bet you'd like Scotty Anderson's stuff too. All the best. Thanks for your vids.

Thanks Paul! Ted Greene is certainly a hero of mine, so I'll be happy if I can play something that even remotely resembles what that master can do! Thanks again for the lovely comment and for your generosity towards the channel.

i know the thing about artificial harmonics and stuff, but i'm troubled about how you get to do that 7 13 chord in artificial harmonics just by sweeping the end up of the frets with your index..

I must know, did you end that bit of (gorgeous) improv at the end of the video anticipating that it would resolve perfectly into your outro theme tune?? Cause that was just beautiful
@RobbieBarnby

Haha! Well spotted! Definitely wasn't planned, but that's the reason for the big pause at the end after I played the 'G6/9 - Ab△9 - Am11 - Bb13' chords. I realised in that moment that it might actually voice lead nicely into the theme tune. I just couldn't decide on what to do quick enough (hence the pause!). Thanks for watching, I love that these little details get picked up!
