Now i know why my forehand lands 3 feet from my actual feets! :) I am holding it wrong, leaning back and do not load the gun. Back to prectice! Thank you Robbie, so valuable for someone struggling to learn!

Thanks Robbie, I have a fairly good 120ft standstill forehand. I think these 3 tips combined may help me with a walk up to head towards 200ft without "yeating" it sky high or turning it into a roller. 👍🙏

My forehands have been doing this randomly and I rely on my forehand a lot as a southpaw. Legit starting this video now and am already thankful for you making this video.

This tricky thing about any coach giving advice to a large group of people, is even though what they say can be correct, that doesn't mean it always applies to every person. For example, I agree that you need to use your wrist during a forehand, how ever that does depend on how flexible the person's elbow is and how much lag they create. If they can product a lot of whip using the elbow (without hurting themself), than keep a tighter wrist is actually very beneficial. A tight wrist moving forward like an elastic is going to produce far more power and spin than anyone can create just by using their wrist. How ever that depends on the person and their body. How ever it's important to point out (like you did), that just because it's a stiff wrist, doesn't mean you arm the disc. You need to have elbow flexibility to be able to snap the arm through.

Good point! Call me crazy, but check out this short. I learned to play squash in Singapore, and the motion looks/feels much the same as my best forehands (which happen occasionally!). It's way different than tennis. All about lag and "snap" or "slap". There is no way to roll too much if I do this right. kzbin.infoMPHhXO5vCf0

As a forehand dominate player I would suggest learning on a 7 speed disc. Small enough rim that fitting an unfamiliar grip is easy but also gets you accustomed to the shape and feel of a driver. There is quite a difference between low speed and high speed forehand technique.

Love these tips! Can’t wait to try them all out. I’m a big fan of the “learn how to flick a putter smoothly” route because it shows me immediately when there are errors in my form. Three favourite discs to forehand are the Axiom Crave, Discraft Buzzz, and Prodigy A5 but have to give an honorable mention to both the Axiom Envy and Innova Thunderbird. 🙌

Of ALLLLLL the topics you teach on, this topic (forehand form) is the one I need help on the most. I'd love to message you privately and show you just exactly why, but I'll try to type it out. I am right handed. My right middle finger, is cut off just below the first knuckle. So, I have about 2/3 of a right middle finger. I'm not that great at angry gestures, but I'm great with counting in fractions, and if you need to know when it's 4:30 I've got you covered. 😁So I can't do a two finger grip, and one finger just isn't even in the realm of control when I try to throw. So, I've been using a "Two and a half finger" grip. What that does wrist wise, is it makes me throw with the right index and ring pads on the flight plate, as it's near impossible to rotate your ring finger independent of your other fingers. So my wrist ends up angled up at about a 45 degree angle throughout the throw. And yet, instead of throwing nose up, I think I'm rolling my wrist because about 60% of the time I'm absolutely dirting my plastic. Like 40-50 feet in front of my drive, straight into the dirt. I have no idea what to do to fix this, but if anyone knows, it's Robbie C.

Thanks Robbie, all those resonated. I'd maybe add getting into a 'loaded' stance with the non-throwing arm in the penultimate step. Elbow up and forward, hand back with the disk. It helped me anyway! My main problem is not getting a really clean release very often. I've tried moving the disc forward a bit so the sharp edge of the rim can't get caught behind the fold of skin between thumb and forefinger; it seems to help but I'm not completely convinced. Otherwise: Mako3, River, Musket.

Hehey! Great tips! I'm rolling them over as exemplified. I will focus on your points here and master silly flippy drivers during the offseason. I am able to throw FH about 330 ft. decently accurately. But the miss is more often than not turning the disc over. Even happens sometimes with beefy discs as well. I found relaxing the arm itself helps also. When trying to throw far I used to tense up more than I do today.

I enjoyed your video. My most three favorite forehand disc: 1. The Burg for upshot’s to the basket that I want to go right to left and just land. 2. The Zone for shots that I want to go left to right and slide up to the basket. 3. The Justice for shots that I need to go farther distance than the Zone. Your thoughts?

100%! Once I got my forehand form correct it stopped hurting afterwards to have played with forehand. Good form is usually something that your body is very okay with so if it hurts, then there are probably form issues.

When your forehand is worse than the bad example...Lemme grab a notepad. I swear I've tried all three pad positions and it's always a rolled over wrist, unless I focus extremely hard on palm up. (Which just makes not only my shoulder, but my wrist hurt)

From the video yesterday with Abby(?), I felt like I improved my forehand a little with your suggested grip. My take from Scott Stokely was that you want your finger pad on the rim. But putting it in the crease as you suggest instead, combined with really focusing on the wrist action seemed to result in a better and more controlled throw. Thank you so much for these tips! What are your thoughts on Stokely's throwing style? It's more upright and forward facing, and a wind up like a softball pitch. I tend to sometimes get shoulder pain throwing like, but I can't tell if I'm doing it wrong, or if it doesn't work for me because I'm unathletic, 37, very short, and throw a ball worse than most 8 year old girls. He claims his style is the only right way, and the dude can forehand farther than most, but it's hard to tell if that's just because of his incredible wingspan. Most pros throw more like you.

Forehand has always came to me way more naturally and just made more sense than backhand. I never really practiced it, been practicing backhand for a decade and the forehand is still just a capable. Kind of sad and cool at the same time.

I tried all the grips but saw my biggest increase in distance and consistent distance when I went to the Sexton/Stokely/McBeth kind of "superfinger" grip. Pinching the index finger into the rim and then middle finger pinching into the index finger. The snap and speed was immediately noticeable for me and it felt more like pinching down on a baseball for me.

So with the spin drill in the beginning. I was using my Glitch and having the hardest time feel confident getting the disc to spin on the middle finger. I just tried the drill with my MVP Spin, and the transition from the flight plate to the rim is rounded, I was able to immediately get the disc to spin on my middle finger. Something to consider when trying to learn this drill.
