Is it STILL Power Rangers?

As long as they have a team that morphs into action and have giant robot monster fights, it's Power Rangers to me. There are many seasons that didn't have call backs to older series, ignoring Team Up episodes. Ever since Lightspeed Rescue, they keep on switching the team to new ones and each season rarely have call backs to old ones. Ninja Storm, Mystic Force, Jungle Fury, and RPM didn't even have a crossover during their seasons.

But if it's not Mighty "Morphin", and they don't stop there, and they don't say, "It's Morphin Time", there's no Zordon, there's no dinosaurs and it's some weird just..transformational suit...is it Power Rangers? I mean Ironman Technically transforms if you think about it. And there are tons of mecha shows like Voltron, Eva, or the Pacific Rim films.

@@GeekLevelAsian Only 4 seasons are dinosaur themed out of the 28 seasons. From Zeo to RPM, they didn't say "It's morphin time." Zordon isn't there after In Space and is rarely referred to afterwards. Even fan favorites such as Time Force and RPM aren't Dinosaur based, didn't use the "It's morphin time catch phrase", and didn't have Zordon.

@@hunterkiller1440 I mean technically for super sentai logic. Dino seasons Is more like a traditional season that show up every 10 year or so. The only way they can make new Dino seasons Is if they do there own creativity

I mean, you look at Donbrothers and they’ve been really experimenting a h the Sentai formula so PR can be anything but, definitely within certain limits. I’m intrigued to see where this goes!

I just met Austin St John at comic con recently- damn I really should’ve asked him about his thoughts I’m not sure how to feel- I look forward to a new universe, but I do agree with Amy Jo; with such an established universe already, it just feels unheard of for this new concept to be independent from the original universe.

I feel like Hasbro shouldn't abandon the past because without all the lore and concepts from the previous seasons, this franchise wouldn't have grown so large. However, if Hasbro desire for the franchise to grow even further, they got to take a risk. Let's be honest, neither Saban nor Disney saw the true potential in this franchise, but atleast at the very least, Hasbro trying to make this franchise evolve. In my opinion, they can respect the past, take the past as a reference, but they don't need to bring it back completely. MMPR has enough love through the comics, toys, etc. I'm not saying they should just leave MMPR and all the previous season behind, but they don't need to just jump onto the MMPR bangwagon immediately. Trust me, I've seen plenty of PR fans complaining about MMPR getting all the shine now. No disrespect to the originals, but when was the last thing any of them did that was PR related? I'm not trash talking Amy Jo, but when was the last time she even got involved with PR? I know David Yost trying to get a new MMPR project started and I hope he does get the support.

I think it comes down to what "Power Rangers mean to the person". To me, Power rangers isn't all about adapting Super Sentai. Sure, it started out like that, but with the comics, games, movies, etc.....they evolved into a separate multiverse. Power Rangers to me is all about a group of heroes, same or different, working together, getting powers from the Morphin grid, helping the planer and the ppl. As long as those concepts stays, it will be PR for me. But I get what you are saying. But both the tv and comics has shown, that a original team can work. I have yet to see ppl hating on most original rangers (Ryan from LSR, the spirit rangers from jungle fury, lord drakkon, rangers slayer, etc). This shows us that PR can definitely thrive on original ranger team. Like the spirit ranger arc was great. What I find funny is nowadays, "PR fans" would bash the kids shows like Dino fury and Beast Morphers. Then you have other fans, like you Geek, saying the kids should continue. I respect you Geek. I hope the tv series still continues.

It’s funny because as the comments started coming in, I came to the same realization! It depends on what PR means to the individual and what their favorite parts of the show are. I was talking to a friend, and I asked, “if it’s not Mighty Morphin, will they say it’s Morphin time?” “If it’s more of a serious show, will we get poses and a morphing sequence every episode?” Those are so important to me as a PR or Sentai related thing, but I can see that maybe not everyone likes or cares about that. That might even be some peoples least fav part of it. Thanks for the well thought out and articulate comment!

I’m not sure the Ship of Theseus idea holds when for 30 years that’s what Power Rangers has built itself to be. Same with Sentai. By the time Turbo comes around you could say “well all these parts are different so it’s not Power Rangers.” But power Rangers has made that part of their brand.

Definitely true that it has different teams and themes. But the show has always had the same format, same formulas, and with recent seasons and generous plot device…exists in the same universe.

It would be at least cool if they adapted multiple sentai seasons into a single narrative. I get it they did this before with VR troopers where they use 2 different metal heroes shows and make it into a one storyline. It is possible if they use there brain properly and have an in-plot explain some certain inconsistent like "Why does some of the ranger mecha barely do anything in battle while one of them does?"

My opinion to the question you pose is similar to my thoughts on Batman - Batman is simultaneously the dark and gritty Dark Knight Returns AND the campy Adam West show. I think we can have a grown up (maybe gritty) Power Rangers and it still be Power Rangers, BUT, as you pointed out with the differences of Beetle Borgs and VR Troopers, there are core elements that make Power Rangers different from other superheroes. They are a TEAM, strongest together, deriving power from the Morphin Grid channeled through a medium (dinosaurs, technology, magic, etc). I will also agree with Amy Jo Johnson that there should be connections to other teams - Zordon even references previouse warriors in early episodes of Mighty Morphin.

I understand where Amy is coming from, but shows need to evolve. Just because something worked 30 years ago doesn't mean it will work today. I believe Johnathan understands that power rangers needs a rebirth and maybe a change is what the franchise needs. I understand that people who grew up watching migthy morphin might not like a change, but in order for power rangers to become big like marvel it needs one

Acknowledge lore, but more character driven themes like the comics and less of the wackiness can work, even with a whole new design for a team. I don't expect rated R power rangers maybe barely push a teen rating. I don't need River Dale Power rangers.

I honestly feel like power rangers won't be power rangers anymore if they steer away from using sentai footage. That is what power rangers is its a based on Japanese footage. If you start fooling around with the whole heart of power rangers it will be end of power rangers as we know it. If that happens i may just drop pr all together and go full on sentai fan

I actually want the original cast of mighty Morphin to at least show up to be part of this world and to pass on the torch officially because I look at your original Power Rangers and I said there was a passing of the torch in the series but it never felt earned. And if Jonathan is going to make a new series? Make something brand spanking new you got a reference or use something of the original TV show Power Rangers you can’t just leave them up there hanging because damn. But he’s a Director he’s made good shows they have good notoriety I don’t know if you can really take Power Rangers and conquer it the dude make some dark shit just gonna be honest.
