Wow, that's a bumper crop of Turmeric, you've got to be happy with that 😀👍 Make sure to add a goodly ammount of black pepper to any dishes you make that you use the Turmeric in, as the black pepper (specifically the piperine in black pepper) helps increase the absorbsion and health benefits of Turmeric.

Was a lot more that I thought I'd get. In all honesty, I thought 4kg or so but over 7 was ridiculous. Not sure where we're going to be able to store it as the freezers need to be turned off while we're renovating. I always add a load of fresh pepper to dishes so have that all sorted. The girls would say far more than is needed a lot of the time. 😉😄 Cheers and have a top one mate. 👍

Aquaponics huh? I have never done that. Living on the Westcoast of the South Island of New Zealand, there is Water galore. Just bought a section there and building a wooden house and looking forward to self-sufficient living, aquaponics seems to be the answer. Just need to shelter it a bit better, as we have very strong winds gusting through the valley down below our section. I saw your video on ginger and now on tumeric as well, hmmm, my favourites. Excellent harvest! I didn't know the leaves were edible. BTW all you need to do to get most of a plant out in one piece is to flood the bed completely and stop up the drain. Grab the roots and wiggle them out of the flooded pebbles, then dunk the root ball into a large bucket full of water and shake the beads off with a twisting action. 90% of the beads will detach and float free.
@RobsAquaponics2 жыл бұрын
Tried that flood method a few times & with the roots matted as they are on the larger spice plants it doesn't always work. Cheers David.

Rob, I really like your channel.. now you have a few different types of gardens, from wicking beds, to Grow Bags to the Aquaponic beds.. which of these have you found to be the most successful in terms of yield ? Also which of these gardens are the easiest to look after and maintain, example, for someone who works all week and only gets into the garden on the weekends..
@RobsAquaponics6 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve. I think the aquaponics would be the best for leafy greens & herb yields above the rest. I think the honey pod peas did better in there than the soil as well. As for maintenance, the wicking beds would be the easiest as they're self watering & only require being topped up once, maybe twice a week. Then all I need to do is come back to plant, harvest or fertilise them. The yield you get from them will depend on the soil you use but I have found they grow a bit slower than aquaponics & hydroponics. Cheers Steve.

I gave my thumbs up for your video, I like what you are doing. It looks like you harvest the curcuma too early, but i guess you had to. The plants were growing out of the roof. The leaves of your plants were huge. Soif the roof was not thelimit i think you could have got a lot of tumericof it. I have bin growing tumeric in Costa rica, Organicly. I was fortunate to use worm compost/liquid AKA Black Gold. I poured tons of the Black Gold on the plants, just before it starts raining every day. I had an amazing 15 KG/m2. Friend of the farm uses it to make tumeric oil, He told us it had "too much" curcumine in it after he brought it to a lab for analysis. He diluted it when he used our curcumine to make oil out of it. Hi Rob It is a good video. I understand what is a mother plant, however, after the harvest what do you do with the the harvest from the mother plant? Is there any difference between the use of turmeric from the mother plant I mean, can you eat it like other turmeric or do you use it for planting again?
@RobsAquaponics3 жыл бұрын
You could plant it again or just leave it be & harvest from around it Dave. I find using fresh large fingers generally have better vigour compared to the larger mothers that have been dug up & replanted. I have lost a few large mothers I replanted, not 100% sure why, maybe there was just too many open wounds from where all the branches of fingers were removed. Hope that helps some mate.

Just beautiful. This is my first year to attempt to grow in pot. I live in a cold climate. Going to bring whole plant indoors for winter. Will that work .?..😊😊

It would be best to I think Iarieta 👍 Popping it in a warm spot that gets a bit of sunlight will help some. Hope it overwinters well for you. 👍

So much information! I'm intending to build a walipini with a full-scale system eventually. But I want to build a mini unit in my propagation shed just to get a feel for the concept. Any ideas where I can find starter info? BTW, we're micro off-grid in the UK, so are on 12-48V mostly. Cheers Rob

Hi Rob, you said that this turmeric plant was in the system for a couple of years. Did you have to force this plant to go dormant, or was it happy being “on” constantly for several years? I have a short summer and will end up taking my turmeric inside from the backyard raised bed once temperatures cool down. The plant is only 5 months old, so definitely not harvestable. I am trying to figure out whether I should let it grow inside over the winter or force it go dormant until next spring.
@RobsAquaponics6 жыл бұрын
The plant dies back by itself when the temperature started to drop Tatyana. 👍 I don't think it would put on much growth inside unless you kept the temp up in the high 20°C range. Would be a great way to get a head start on next season if you could though. Cheers & happy growing.

Excellent video. Will leaving the turmeric plant in the ground for a couple years produce larger pieces of turmeric? And can you replant harvested turmeric plants year after year? I harvested a plant yesterday because the leaves went flat but others have not yet done the same here in mid-Florida. Thank you.
@RobsAquaponics4 жыл бұрын
They will put on ma little bit more size but a freshly planted section will have more vigour from what I've seen Chef. 👍 I normally select the current season's fingers for replanting for the same reason but you can start plants off using older mothers or fingers. Hope that helps some.

@@RobsAquaponics Your aquaponic system must be the major reason your turmeric grows so large. Might give it a try but will see how my next growth turns out first. Thanks.

I saw when you were pulling the turmeric out that there was dark matter coming out of the bottom of the bed...so would you be cleaning all that out before you put the bed back into operation?
@RobsAquaponics6 жыл бұрын
Hi Mio. That's all the dead organic matter, fish waste & worm castings that accumulates in the beds. Normally I would give it a bit of a clean while the bed was empty if it was really bad. This one is being taken offline so I'll be removing all the clay until I move it into it's new position. Cheers & have a top one.

Great job. But I wonder why you don't harvest (pull them out) with they hydroton flooded?
@RobsAquaponics6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ben. Learned a while back that the smallest bit of turmeric left behind can start off a new plant so thought it better not to allow any to sink to the base under the clay where it could be missed. Cheers.

Hello Rob! Thank you for your video! I took my turmeric out of the soil and looks exactly like your, it’s huge and I do have a lot of them. I was afraid, before I’ve found your channel, if my turmeric is radioactive because of its size. What I should do with all this crop? Are they eatable?
@RobsAquaponics2 жыл бұрын
Turmeric is most definitely edible Venera. We tend to just leave it in the ground & harvest what we need for the kitchen when we cook. I do have a few storage videos as well if that helps. I'll add the ginger one as well as you can use the same processes for turmeric. g'day Rob, quick question.. how does the taste of aquaponic ginger and turmeric compare with soil grown product? remembering your taste test of sweet potatoes and curious if there are similar results. cheers
@RobsAquaponics6 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew. I haven't noticed the difference myself with previous crops. Haven't tasted any of this batch but it smells just as aromatic as the soil grown plants. 👍 Cheers mate.

I'm sure you would produce even more with a lighter medium, clay tends to restrict root vegetables growth somewhat
@RobsAquaponics2 жыл бұрын
I find the clay is light & moves very freely. We had a galangal plant grow so large it started to push it out of the grow bed. Rock on the other hand tends to lock together &v restrict growth.

I wonder if you can feed the leaves to chicken? Thanks!

have you ever allowed them to go dormant?
@RobsAquaponics4 жыл бұрын
This one was the result of missing a section & letting it over winter in the bed. 👍 I leave most of our turmeric & gingers in the beds all year round & just harvest as we need them now. Cheers. & happy growing. 🌱🌱

What kind of material is using for the bed...??? Thanks in Advance
@RobsAquaponics4 жыл бұрын
Hi there. The plants are growing in a fired clay pebble. This clay media is used mainly in hydroponic & aquaponic grow beds. The turmeric was growing in an aquaponic system that is powered by the waste that fish generate. This clip will give you a bit better understanding of how it works. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mGSufn-QnryMpNU

Hi mate, great show, question; what type of pot and what's the drainage?
@RobsAquaponics2 жыл бұрын
This is an aquaponics system & the media I use is a fired clay ball, the same as many folks use in hydroponics. The bed is a section of an IBC that I've cut into a tray. It gets flooded & drained numerous times a day to bring nutrient-rich water to the roots of the plants. This video explains what aquaponics is in a bit greater depth if it helps any, kzbin.info/www/bejne/qHitiXRqotSIaMk
