Birdseye Maple Lumber

Robs successful trip to London Lumber in Moncton, NB. Check out a nice stash of heavy birdseye maple that will become beautiful dovetail, crosscut and tenon saw handles. London Lumber is a small lumber retail operation in NB. Arnold London specializes in unique small runs of hard to find wood. He also stocks various grades of Northeastern White Pine in various thicknesses.

I finally convinced my wife to by me a Rob Cosman dovetail saw for Christmas. I picked it up last night from our local Woodcraft store. I fell asleep with it on the couch last night. Should have seen the look on my wife's face this morning when she found me in the living room. She says I was hugging it like a teddy bear. I am so excited to put it to work this weekend. Love this, I'll show it to my high school woodshop classes. I do tree work on the weekends, bring the wood in to mill and we build projects from the logs we mill.

I love Birdseye Maple, and what I call Tiger Maple! they have a special beauty which a woodworker like myself likes to finish out natural; no stain, only varnish. If the wood is of a certain quality range, and is finished out with clear glossy varnish, the light can hit it a certain way that gives the birdseyes and tiger stripes a special kind of sheen that other woods just cannot achieve. I think the rarity of Birdseye Maple is really a matter of where you find it. In my area there are lots of maple trees, but nearly all of them are no more than 50 to 60 years old. It is rare to see a maple that is old growth here. Old growth maples are so scares that they are protected, unless the tree needs to be cut down due to unusual circumstances. I know of a local lumber shop that imports wood from around the world, and I was able to buiy some Birdseye Maple from there. I used it with Purpleheart to make a chessboard and the chess pieces. That Chess set has been appraised at $1500, but I am not selling it. It is my personal set, handcrafted by me. The board and the pieces feature the birds eyes in an eye pleasing way. Did I mention that "I love Birdseye Maple"? Yes indeed!

I share your enthusiasm for buying timber from a timber yard friend. I buy the timber first and think of a use for it after. I can only get rough sawn, so planed timber would be quite a luxury. I guess there is plenty of maple in your area. I recently bought some London Plane which is similar Platanus Acerifolia. It looks and works like maple or Sycamore.

Rob , can you explain the "cooking process "for the darkened birdseye maple . Is it like a smoking process that darkens the wood with heat and smoke ?

Torrified, cooked in the absence of oxygen at a temp that would burn.
