That is how you know Rob is a good teacher. He makes this look so easy, like me saying, “hey, I think i could do that right now,” without ever cutting a dovetail ever…great job!

I use a 45 degree jig to do mitres on my dovetails.... take it to the gauge line with the chisel gives a perfectly flat mitre with no need to do anything further... I do mitres on the top and bottoms of my boxes so good to see how you do them mate :)

Thanks for another great video, Rob. One comment: mitre both front and rear when building cases. This makes it easier to plane a rebate through the full length rear of the edges (to fit a panel). Regards from Perth, Derek.

Perfection at it’s best. Sharp tools, excellent techniques, superb teaching.... Is it possible to cut the 45 degree angle after the typical dovetails are cut? The part makes me nervous is the planning after the joint closed, so I use sander. Dear Rob I truly admire you for showing gratitude and giving genuine credit to David Charlesworth whenever you mention the ruler trick. May his soul Rest In Peace.

U mentioned using shim setting at 24thou. Shim I have, has markings of 18,19,20 and 21 on it. Is there another shim with different settings? I'm typically using the 20 or 21 off setting when doing dovetails with your dovetail saw.b
@RobCosmanWoodworking
@RobCosmanWoodworking 2 жыл бұрын
We have 2 x shawn shims, the regular and the 3/4. They match up to the regular dovetail saw or the 3/4 dovetail saw, depending on which one you have. I was using my regular dovetail saw thus the regular shawn shim with 23,24,25, 26

I was just starting to practice these yesterday, and then this video showed up in the evening; what a coincidence! The variation I was trying has half a pin above the miter rather than a squared off tail. Any reason to prefer one over the other? The half pin is a little fussier, I think, but I'm going to try this one now. It may just come down to aesthetics.

Hey rob, not sure if you are aware or not of this, but I should let you know that Amazon is marketing your crosscut saws with a description that claims that they all come with a "hand made presenting box" and pp. are not happy that they are not fulfilling that part of the order. There are some bad comments about your saw because of it, which I think is very unfair. Your saws are beautiful and I know your a man of your word so I would hate to see any negative reviews being cast your way by Amazon misrepresenting your stuff. this is the exact thing they are saying: "The saw comes cradled in a beautifully hand crafted Walnut and Ash presentation/storage case"

So sad to hear that David passed away. I actually tried this joint few months ago. On the miter, I sawed 1mm away and I pared it using a chisel and a 45 degrees guiding block. I can't saw the way you did it in the video, lol.
