I can't believe how Jack Russell was really brave, batting around with a helmet and the sunglasses on at the same time unlike the cricket players today... how the times changed!

wow, good memories. Was at that Wanderers test all five days. man that last day sucked with Atherton and Russell blocking out all day for the draw-my second worst day at live cricket only to day 3 1997(Wanderers) vs Aus where Blewitt and Steve Waugh batted all day and destroyed S.A.

Mark Ramprakash had a test career of 2 halves in my opinion. The first half was all about unfulfilled promise and frustration. The 2nd half was quite impressive with some good innings batting and some brilliant fielding. It’s not a surprise that he made his 2 test centuries in the 2nd half of his career.

When I look at it now, so long after, that was a damn good England side, but they just had zero self-belief. It was completely knocked out of them by three massive defeats against Australia - followed by another three! It's taken fifteen years, the complete rebuilding of domestic cricket from school and club up, luck, new blood with no bad memories, and the retirement of some of the greatest Australians of all time to get it back. That's all!

Nasser Hussain bought England back into international cricket. After that horrible 1990's.

I thought the same when I looked at the team sheet, definitely lacked self belief as had the talent. This coming from a South African.

The problem is that during the 90's English had 15 good players but not a single world class player. Plus they lacked ammunition for Asia and dryer pitches in Aus and WI

Central contracts being introduced in 2000 was a huge part of the upturn of English cricket.

Yea got to agree. So much talent but no team ethic in the 90s. Selectors didn't help the cause by constantly picking and then dropping individuals. But don't forget to add to your list the work that both Duncan Fletcher and Nasser Hussain did to turn the team around into a decent mediocre professional side, which set the platform for Vaughn's 2004/5 side to be successful.

England had many low quality cricketers back then.
