You can see how the inconsistencies in Plankton's behavior indicate his internal uncertainty. He claims he values money over people, but when Spongebob asks why he gave him the gun, Plankton doesn't know. He's lying to himself, saying that Spongebob never meant anything to him, to put himself at ease. He betrayed Spongebob for what he thought was the easy way out, but in reality, he is dooming himself to a life of guilt and crime.

Personally I think Plankton had a plan to give SpongeBob the means to kill Squidward so Plankton could take over his empire. He was playing both sides to see who would come out on top. If SpongeBob won, Plankton would have taken over Vice city, but now he has to wait until the next opportunity to kill Squidward appears.

Watching this again, I feel like that despite his betrayal, Plankton wants nothing but the best for Spongebob. It's entirely possible that Squidward's guys did get to Plankton first, but rather than fight, they struck a deal with him, yet despite this Plankton still called to warn Spongebob of the impending hit placed him too. Next, while Plankton doesn't get involved with the Gunfight at Sponge's place he does arrive moments after to pull Spongebob together and tries to convince him to leave the city; However when Sponge declines, needing to save his son, Plankton gives Sponge his gun (something that he later denies to keep up his facade in front of Squidward). Perhaps he might even redeem himself and save Sponge's Son later down the line. We'll see.
