On January 19, 2013, Robert Calder, the world's foremost authority on W. Somerset Maugham, talked about his research and books he has written on W. Somerset Maugham. This was Mr. Calder's first appearance at the D.G. Wills Bookstore in La Jolla, California.

Really interesting. Thank you. My parents had his books in the 1950sand being a great reader I read them all at 15. His short stories left me very uneasy. I was thrilled when staying at Raffles in Singapore a few years ago to see they had a special little area set where he wrote. It’s all been modernised now so it may not be there.

Stunning that this guy talks about the popularity of adaptations of Maugham and doesn't mention Shakespeare. (And also that there are some people about whom there are endless numbers of biographies -- again, Shakespeare.)

Maugham's The Letter is set in Malaya, and Singapore, not Hong Kong, unless I'm mistaken...

No mention of the fact that Maugham was a physician

It's a pity that the video ends before the talk ended and the near incessant giggling from a very involved member of the audience. Maugham had to change the title from _Beauty from Ashes_ to _Of Human Bondage_ because the former was used by another author shortly before his book got published.
