The genius of this song is the restraint. It would be easy/expected to write a song with extreme over the top characters. REK essentially wrote characters we all have in our family and the copious consumption of alcohol at Christmas. This is the counterpoint to all the traditional holiday classic that just idyllic and little else. This song resonates and all sounds very familiar because this is how most people's christmas parties go.

I think our guy didn't want to play this one that day. I think he was wishing his most requested song was more genius, which - he sure has plenty to choose from. They just don't make us giddy with delight and anticipation for CHRISTMAS. Ain't nothin' wrong with the thing that makes us giddy with delight being requested more than other songs.
